George Ramogi & C.K. Jazz: Benga Sessions from the 70s Mixtape🎼🎸🎧🔥👩🏿: Black Music from Kenya🌍
George Ramogi (1945–1997) was a Kenyan musician, who empowered the traditional luo benga and rumba genre of music. Ramogi was known for his spur of the good life and his notable appearances at bars and clubs in western Kenya-Nyanza region. During the beginning of his career.George is believed to have been the real force behind “benga” as a genre.
It was in 1965 that Ramogi and colleagues started the Luo Sweet Band, later changed to Continental Kilo Jazz Band (or C.K. Jazz). The nucleus of this group had been performing together, on and off, right up to Ramogi’s death at the age of 52 in 1997.
In 1994, a small group of Kenyans in the United States pooled their resources to bring Ramogi and band to the US to perform. The Safari CD, recorded in the US, is an outgrowth of that tour and, in fact, contains praise songs (as is common) for several of the individuals who organised the tour. Although not a very polished production, it’s certainly authentic benga and it has its moments of greatness. The cassette contains more songs from the same recording session and somewhat better audio quality.
Ramogi has also been recoginised through his recordings with other Kenyan musicians such as Were Carey, Ochieng Kabaselleh, Daniel Owino Misiani and Tom Kodiyo He created C.K Dumbe Dumbe Jazz band in response to the popular Zairean group Orchestre Lipua Lipua. Dumbe Dumbe is a Luo word for the children playing in the rain (nyithindo go dumbe dumbe).More on George Ramogi is coming up in soon to be published book by longtime friend of George Ramogi Mr Mondeng Wetaler. The book shines the light on a humble beginning of George Ramogi to star-studded funeral of the all charismatic and famous son of Kamwala Weta. This book will be a must read to all fans of George Ramogi. #Kenya #Africa #Georgeramogi #Africanmusic #Bengamusic #Blackpeople #Noire #Eastafrica #Africana #Africaine #Negro #Dancemusic

Piny Ose Mer | Daniel Owino Misiani & Shirati Jazz
Daniel Owino Misiani (22 February 1940-17 May 2006) was a musician from Kenya. He was known as the King of History in Kenya; overseas, he was known as the the grandfather of benga, of which he was a pioneer.
Misiani was born in Shirati, Tanzania and grew up in northern Tanzania. His parents were singers, but opposed his choice of a musical career on religious grounds. Nevertheless, he moved to Kenya in the 1960s to be a musician. He first recorded with the Victoria Boys in 1965. The band changed its name many times before becoming popular as Shirati Jazz. He sang mostly in Dholuo and Swahili languages. He is known as a pioneering contributor to the Benga music genre. During his long career he released numerous recordings, with some international releases. He was imprisoned on several occasions for lyrics that were perceived as crossing the line into political criticism.
He died in a road traffic accident at an accident blackspot in Kisumu, on the highway to Kakamega, in a crash between a minibus and a public transport van in which many others were injured. At time of his death, aged 66, he was still an active performer. Misiani, who was polygamous, had two wives (Felista and Beatrice) with 14 children.

Ladies and gentlemen
This is Mambo No. 5!
One, two, three, four, five
Everybody in the car, so come on let's ride
To the liquor store around the corner
The boys say they want some gin and juice
But I really don't wanna
Beer bust, like I had last week
I must stay deep, 'cause talk is cheap
I like Angela, Pamela, Sandra and Rita
And as I continue you know they're getting sweeter
So what can I do? I really beg you, my Lord
To me flirting is just like a sport
Anything fly, it's all good let me dump it
Please set in the trumpet
A little bit of Monica in my life
A little bit of Erica by my side
A little bit of Rita is all I need
A little bit of Tina is what I see
A little bit of Sandra in the sun
A little bit of Mary all night long
A little bit of Jessica here I am
A little bit of you makes me your man
Afrakan🇰🇪BENGA/RHUMBA Musik VOL.6🎶🎵
Many historians and musicologists agree that the cradle of the Benga genre of Kenya popular music is Nyanza province in western Kenya.
This region is home to the fishing community of Luo-speaking people, many of whom live around Lake Victoria—known locally as Nyanza. Lake Victoria straddles the three East African countries—Kenya, Uganda and Tanzania—covering an area of over 68,000 square kilometers.
Today, Benga music is played across a fair share of Kenya—from the lake shores in the west, across the vast floor of the Rift Valley to the slopes of the imposing 5,199 metre Mount Kenya and into the plains of eastern Kenya.
Benga’s most distinctive feature is its fast-paced rhythmic beat and bouncy finger-picking guitar technique. Indeed, the core of benga is the lead guitar, which essentially follows the track of the vocals. Without exception, the singing is at some point separated from the climax—the instrumental expanse that combines three or four guitars and percussions.
Rhumba: Ochieng Kabaselleh was the first artist to pop up in the Rhumba scene in Kenya along with Gabriel Omollo & Juma Toto. Other artists such as Mazadijo, Jamnazi Afrika’s Milton Ongoro, Musa Juma and his brother Omondi Tony, and the current sensation John Junior and Igwe Prezda Bandason also have contributed.
