Belle and Sebastian - Another Sunny Day
4:05
Lyrics:
Another sunny day, I met you up in the garden
You were digging plants, I dug you, beg your pardon
I took a photograph of you in the herbaceous border
It broke the heart of men and flowers, and girls, and trees
Another rainy day, we're trapped inside with a train set
Chocolate on the boil, steamy windows when we met
You've got the attic window lookin' out on the cathedral
And on a Sunday evening bells ring out in the dusk
Another day in June, we'll pick eleven for football
We're playing for our lives the referee gives us fuck all
I saw you in the corner of my eye on the sidelines
Your dark mascara bids me to historical deeds
Now, everybody's gone you picked me up for a long drive
We take the tourist route the nights are light until midnight
We took the evening ferry over to the peninsula
We found the avenue of trees went up to the hill
That crazy avenue of trees, I'm living there still
There's something in my eye a little midge so beguiling
Sacrificed his life to bring us both eye to eye
I heard the eskimos remove obstructions with tongues, dear
You missed my eye, I wonder why, I didn't complain
You missed my eye, I wonder why, please do it again
The lovin' is a mess, what happened to all of the feeling?
I thought it was for real, babies, rings and fools kneeling
And words of pledging trust and lifetimes stretching forever
So what went wrong? It was a lie, it crumbled apart
Ghost figures of past, present, future haunting the heart
(I do not own this song.)

We Were Beautiful
I was blank as I could be
Hearing voices telling me
Walk away from everything
But where was I meant to go?
Far away from those I know
To some desolate below
We were in the uber scene
Where they grind the coffee bean
And the women are oblique
And the boys are paper thin
Ragged beards upon their chin
We are on the outside looking in
Rise above the present day
Rise above the popular melee
I see you the way you are
I see you the star
We were beautiful before this went down
We were beautiful before the years came
And turned it upside down
We were beautiful before we got wise
We were beautiful with sky and blanket laying low
I am hanging on the line
I'm on duty all the time
I am your Samaritan on call
I could try my best to heal
All the emptiness you feel
In the giving I will be alive
We were wrapped around our roots
Nothing on except our boots
We were intimate around the waist
We were settling our scores
We were healing over sores
We were living out the pleasure that we lost
We were beautiful before this went down
We were beautiful before the years came
And turned it upside down
We were beautiful for all of time and space
I will tell it to the sun and I will tell it to..
If you listen to the night
We can hear the madmen fight
Hear the foxes making out
But the people are immune
Sleeping silent in their rooms
Growing bodies with their sleep
Making plans inside their heads
Making love to shallow friends
Shallow friends
You are not too old to change
Happy only comes after the pain
Of you and me
We were beautiful before the years
came and turned it upside down
We were beautiful before we got wise
We were beautiful with sky and blanket fading out
We were beautiful before this went down
We were beautiful before the years
came and turned it upside down
We were beautiful for all of time and space
I will tell it to the sun and I will tell it to your face
--
Éramos hermosos (español)
Estaba en blanco
Escuchaba voces diciéndome
Escapa de todo
¿Pero a dónde debía ir?
Lejos de aquellos que conozco,
A algún lugar inhóspito.
Estábamos en el mejor lugar
Donde muelen los granos de café.
Y las mujeres son oblicuas
Y los chicos tan delgados como papel,
Barbas andrajosas sobre su mentón.
Miramos la escena desde afuera.
Supera el día de hoy,
Supera el famoso tumulto.
Te veo tal como eres.
Veo tu estrella.
Belle & Sebastian Piazza, New York Catcher
3:02
Elope with me Miss Private and we'll sail around the world
I will be your Ferdinand and you my wayward girl
How many nights of talking in hotel rooms can you take?
How many nights of limping round on pagan holidays?
Oh elope with me in private and we'll set something ablaze
A trail for the devil to erase
San Francisco's calling us, the Giants and Mets will play
Piazza, New York catcher, are you straight or are you gay?
We hung about the stadium, we've got no place to stay
We hung about the tenderloin and tenderly you tell
About the saddest ending of a book you ever had to read
The statue's crying too and well he may
I love you I've a drowning grip on your adoring face
I love you my responsibility has found a place
Beside you and strong warnings in the guise of gentle words
Come wave upon me from the wider family net absurd
You'll take care of her, I know it, you will do a better job
Maybe, but not what she deserves
Elope with me Miss Private and we'll drink ourselves awake
( From: )
We'll taste the coffee houses and award certificates
A privy seal to keep the feel of 1960 style
We'll comment on the decor and we'll help the passer by
And at dusk when work is over we'll continue the debate
In a borrowed bedroom virginal and spare
The catcher hits for .318 and catches every day
The pitcher puts religion first and rests on holidays
He goes into cathedrals and lies prostrate on the floor
He knows the drink affects his speed he's praying for
a doorway
Back into the life he wants and the confession of the bench
Life outside the diamond is a wrench
I wish that you were here with me to pass the dull weekend
I know it wouldn't come to love, my heroine pretend
A lady stepping from the songs we love until this day
You'd settle for an epitaph like Walk Away, Renee
The sun upon the roof in winter will draw you out like
a flower
Meet you at the statue in an hour
Meet you at the statue in an hour

Perfect Couples
I know some friends of mine
Think about them all the time
Why can’t my life be like that?
I’ve seen them in the park
Restauranting after dark
Working out on their yoga mats
Stars of the dancehall crowd
Married young, took their vows
Comfort in their boldness and their flair
Dab hands for all to see
Stroke of brush and poetry
His cut of cloth, the contours of her hair
Thank you for the invite tonight
Perfect snacklets, perfect drinks
I’m getting ideas from your interiors
Perfect apartment, perfect kids
Perfect couples are breaking up
What have they done?
Those perfect couples are breaking up
What have they done?
Don’t make me feel so good
Expect that stuff in Hollywood,
Not in my current milieu
Sexual tension at the fridge
He makes for the organic figs
Belmondo lips, dangling a cig
And she, just back from her hike
And to the gallery she might glide by
With a basket on a bike
They’ve got issues too
But what can you do?
Bad times, they’ll always see them through
(It always lurked in her mind)
Perfect couples are breaking up
What have they done? (In the back of her mind)
Perfect couples, they keep breaking up
What have I done? (It always lurked in his mind)
Those perfect couples are now breaking up
What have they done? (In the back of their minds)
Perfect couples, they keep breaking up
What have I done?
Never happy with my girl
Jealous of a different world
Suddenly the years slip away
What am I waiting for? (I see those perfect couples and I)
What makes me close the door?
I see those perfect couples (Why can’t I be like them?)
I admire the most
Finding fault with my heart (Its always been the same and then)
And always back to the start
What makes me get in the fray
then just throw it away
Yeah, I throw it away
Yes I throw it away (only to find)
Yes I throw it away (only to find)
Perfect couples are breaking up…

Before playing this song Stuart described it as a song they don't play often; as it is a favourite of mine, I couldn't have been happier. A night of utter joy and celebration - somehow B&S remain connected to their fans, despite their huge success. Stuart's voice was as beautiful as ever and the band were as accomplished as his voice was beautiful (if that makes sense?). And the trumpet - a sweet and tender surprise from the darkness at the back of the stage. Stuart's advice - vote Remain. Here is a review of the gig:

LETRA:
Fox in the snow, where do you go
To find something you could eat?
Because the word out on the street is you are starving
Don't let yourself grow hungry now
Don't let yourself grow cold
Fox in the snow
Girl in the snow, where do you go
To find someone who will do?
To tell someone all the truth
Before it kills you
And listen to your crazy laugh
Before you hang a right
And disappear from sight
What do they know anyway?
You'll read it in a book
What do they know anyway?
You'll read it in a book tonight
Boy on the bike, what are you like
As you cycle round the town?
You're going up, you're going down
You're going nowhere
It's not as if they're paying you
It's not as if it's fun
At least not anymore
When your legs are black and blue
It's time to take a break
When your legs are black and blue
Time to take a holiday
Kid in the snow, way to go
It only happens once a year
It only happens once a lifetime
Make the most of it
Second just to being born
Second to dying too
What else would you do?
What else would you do?
What else would you do?
What else would you do?
Fox in the snow
(When your legs are black and blue)
Fox in the snow
(It's not as if they're paying you)
Fox in the snow
(When your legs are black and blue)
Fox in the snow
(It's not as if they're paying you)
Fox in the snow
