  • Beirut Full Concert | NPR MUSIC FRONT ROW

    1:15:57

How does a band return from a recording hiatus that could have permanently displaced it from the audience's eye? If you are Zach Condon and Beirut, you just go about your business and pick up where you left off three years earlier. The group's First Listen Live show at Brooklyn's intimate Bell House on a rainy September night, a concert debuting many of the songs from the brand new No No No, its first album since 2011, showed that Beirut works through its obstacles. Maybe it helps when the initial idea behind a band is ahead of the curve to begin with, no?

When Condon's Beirut first came to prominence in 2006, it emerged from Santa Fe with a fully conceived, pan-global folk sound unlike any indie sensibilities popular on the day. Zach's trumpet and flugelhorn playing was informed by local Mexican mariachi horns, his engagement with the Roma brass bands of the Balkans, and modal jazz changes via a percolating bossa nova; he favored timeless instruments (ukuleles, accordions) and images, to the rush of the modern; and the songs his quavering tenor delivered, also traveled the old continents. Live, the group grew into a formidable sextet, heavy on keyboards, horns and harmony, a world onto themselves.

At the Bell House, Beirut ran down its entire career before a sold-out audience, and the songs from No No No, the band's fourth studio, fit snuggly alongside the older material, even as it heralded directions new and familiar. Perth, for instance, featured a touch of the Memphis soul energy, with Ben Lanz's trombone adding a brassy bump; Fener, a song about a neighborhood in Istanbul, is built around the motorik beat interplay between Aaron Arntz's keyboards and Nick Petree's drums, before dropping down into a great g-funk slink, guided by Condon's Moog. So seemingly apart from Beirut's musical environment, yet, here they were, a natural part of it, making the audience sway endlessly. The hiatus, it seems, simply made full hearts grow fonder.

    • Letra

If I was young, I'd flee this town -
    I'd bury my dreams underground
As did I - We drink to die,
    We drink tonight

    Far from home, elephant guns
Let's take them down one by one
We'll lay it down, it's not been found
    It's not around

    Let the seasons begin
When love was right to roam
    Let the seasons begin
    Take the big game down

And it rips through the silence
    Of our camp at night
And it rips through the night

And it rips through the silence
    Of our camp at night
And it rips through the silence
All that is left is all I hide

  • Guyamas Sonora Beirut

    4:55

  • Beirut - When I Die

    3:17

'When I Die' by Beirut, from the new album 'Gallipoli' out now on 4AD

    Statement by Brody Condon, director:

After the psychosomatic session that inspired the Gallipoli cover art, I ran another session with Zach to guide a new video for “When I Die.” Something was missing. Later I learned the song was loosely about a fictional suicide cult, so I facilitated a group encounter with the band before their show in Berlin. I was surprised by their willingness to test each other’s boundaries, and spontaneously embody elements of Zach’s inner zone. They told me these intimate processes didn’t feel so differently from what they already do on stage.

All I want is the best for our lives my dear,
And you know my wishes are sincere.
What's to say of all the days I cannot bear?

A Sunday smile, we wore it for a while
And a cemetary mile we paused and sang
A Sunday smile, we wore it for a while
And a cemetary mile we paused and sang
About a Sunday smile, and we felt clean

We burnt to the ground, left a view to admire
Buildings in sight, church of white
We burnt to the ground, left a grave to admire
The hills reach for the sky, reach the church of white

A Sunday smile, we wore it for a while
And a cemetary mile we paused and sang
A Sunday smile, we wore it for a while
And a cemetary mile we paused and sang
About a Sunday smile, and we felt clean

    4:00

Beirut's popular Gemayze street was turned into a no-car zone in early December thanks to the Achrafieh2020 initiative. We figured that it'd be cool if both Mike & Karim performed in the middle of the street. So both guys felt it would be fun to jam to some of their favorite rock songs; it would be their Tribute to Rock. It felt like a simple old school jamming session and it was lots of fun watching them go at it...

    3:19

  • MEMORIES OF RAS BEIRUT — WISH YOU WERE HERE

    50:59

    AN UPLOADER'S ADDENDUM
A plausible theory constructed by the Lebanese sociologist Samir Khalaf has it that Ras Beirut, a promontory jutting out of West Beirut into the sea, and the area where the American University is located, contained within it until the Civil War a non-sectarian, pluralistic and open community of scholars, political activists, business people and artists unlike anything else in the Arab world. Khalaf is right, I think, although in the understandable anguish of his lament over Ras Beirut’s passing (it is now parcelled out between Druze and Shi’ite factions) he doesn’t acknowledge strongly enough the latent religious or sectarian feelings that were being temporarily held at bay. The fact is that in Ras Beirut, as in Greater Beirut, everyone knew what everyone else’s religion and sect and ethnic origin were. They were acknowledged almost subliminally, it’s true, but they were noted. ...
Still, there is no denying the terrible sadness and anger one feels about Beirut’s ruination...For some years one could, in Beirut, burn with a hard gemlike flame; even the city’s vice and profligacy had a brilliance you could not see elsewhere. The only thing contemporary Beirut did not give us was staying-power, or enough feelings of concern for the rather fragile foundations that its dazzling hospitality covered. The main consolation of these dark times is the feeling that since Beirut once rose from obscurity it might rise again out of its catastrophic destruction. But there seem to be few Lebanese who believe in such wonders. —Edward Said, 1985
