  • Mantra Percussion: Timber

    50:51

    Buy the album:

When Michael Gordon’s Timber, scored for six amplified wooden 2-by-4s, premiered in 2009, it brought the physicality and endurance of percussion performance to a new level. In the liner notes for Slagwerk Den Haag’s recording of the piece, released on Cantaloupe Music in 2011, Gordon described a connection to the work of shamanist author Carlos Castaneda, whose self-imposed spirit journey in the desert could wipe the brain clean and “bring on visions.”

Newly recorded by Mantra Percussion and reworked by an A-list of producers and DJs, Gordon’s deep exploration into the extreme possibilities of rhythm gets the full electronic treatment on Timber Remixed. The double-CD set also includes Mantra’s live performance of Timber from the 2014 Bang on a Can Marathon.

Six key remixes by Squarepusher, Oneohtrix Point Never, Fennesz and more are also available on limited edition, individually numbered 180-gram vinyl.

30 years ago, three young composers started a journey together, and they called that journey Bang on a Can. After hundreds of thousands of miles and hundreds of new pieces, records, productions, marathons and summer festivals, they're still best of friends - still on the road together, still sharing the journey.

To mark this moment, Michael Gordon, David Lang and Julia Wolfe have together written a piece that celebrates the freedom and mystery of the open road. Dirt road, country road, two lane blacktop, superhighway. Destination unknown. Maybe even unknowable.

Played and sung by the unstoppable, sexy and loud Bang on a Can All-Stars, Road Trip is directed by the visionary Michael Counts with gorgeous scenic design by by CandyStations, and lit by the brilliant Ben Stanton. Come with us!

  • MASS MoCA and Bang on a Can Present Ann Hamilton’s Paper Chorus

    4:10

Ann Hamilton, one of the world's great installation artists, was invited to participate in a residency at Dieu Donné, a New York City-based visual artists workspace, which supports the use of handmade paper in the creation of new art. At the organization’s “wet studio” Hamilton created a series of handmade abaca paper forms with embedded textiles designed to be worn on the body. Recognizing how the works’ visual presence was transformed when activated by the body in motion, the artist began to conceive the works not as static objects, but as musical instruments. The paper components rustle, rattle, and reverberate when worn.

In a collaboration with Bang on a Can Summer Music Festival, Hamilton explored sound vocabularies – of paper, of reading, of singing – in a concert at MASS MoCA on July 29, 2014. The handmade paper components installed in the gallery are some of those worn by Bang on a Can musicians during the Paper Chorus concert.

Watch excerpts from Paper Chorus performed live at MASS MoCA in July 2014 here.

MASS MoCA is one of the world's liveliest (and largest) centers for making and enjoying today's most important art, music, dance, theater, film, and video. Hundreds of works of visual and performing art have been created on its 19th-century factory campus during fabrication and rehearsal residencies, making MASS MoCA among the most productive sites in the country for the creation and presentation of new art. More platform than box, MASS MoCA strives to bring to its audiences art experiences that are fresh, engaging, and transformative.

MASS MoCA's galleries are open 11am to 5pm every day except Tuesdays. The Hall Art Foundation’s Anselm Kiefer reopens April 18, 2015. Gallery admission is $18 for adults, $16 for veterans and seniors, $12 for students, $8 for children 6 to 16, and free for children 5 and under. Members are admitted free year-round. For additional information, call 413.662.2111 x1 or visit massmoca.org.
