This Todd Marcus Quintet performance, recording, and broadcast was made possible in part by the generous support of a grant by the Baltimore Jazz Alliance.

    Todd Marcus - bass clarinet
    Sean Jones - trumpet
    Tim Brey - piano
    Eric Wheeler - bass
    Eric Kennedy - drums

Marcus is one of the few artists worldwide to focus on the bass clarinet as a main instrument in modern jazz. His straight-ahead playing and compositions swing and groove with intensity and often incorporate the Middle Eastern influences of his Egyptian-American heritage. The New York Times writes, “Mr. Marcus is probably the most inventive bass clarinetist working in straight-ahead jazz today…[and] lives in Baltimore, where he is a guiding light on the city’s jazz scene who doubles as an activist and organizer.

    Michael Joseph Harris - Guitar
    Todd Simon - Piano
    Blake Meister - Bass
    Kris Belgica - Rhythm Guitar
The music of Hot Club of Baltimore features rarely played French musette waltzes, Hot Jazz with Latin and Brazilian flavors, New Orleans swing, and be bop. Guitarist and founder Michael Joseph Harris has learned the Django Reinhardt guitar style from the best guitarists in the world who are steeped in the tradition. Harris has been featured twice at Festival Django Reinhardt in France and at most of the prominent Gypsy Jazz festivals in the United States. His recent album Tangent has gained national and international press and was recently chosen as the top four Gypsy Jazz albums of 2020 by Gypsy Jazz Hangouts in the UK. Tracks by Hot Club of Baltimore have been featured twice on Django Festival, an annual compilation of the finest Gypsy jazz in the world by acclaimed producer Jon Larson in Oslo.
We ask that anyone who has the means to support these broadcasts consider contributing a cover charge or ticket price - just as you would to see to see these outstanding performers in a club or concert hall. Our suggested amount is $20 per person, but of course, any amount will help - and for those who are able to do more, we welcome that. While these streams can never replace the lost income these performers face, every little bit helps.

  • Obasi Akotos Oceanic Jazz Orchestra at Keystone Korner Baltimore

    52

A collection of the most beloved and well-known jazz clubs on the East Coast have banded together for the first time ever to create a multi-city East Coast Jazz Festival, which will take place online on Saturday, March 20th from 5 to 11 p.m. The proprietors of Scullers Jazz Club in Boston, Smalls and Birdland in New York, Chris’ Jazz Café in Philadelphia, Keystone Korner in Baltimore and Blues Alley in Washington, DC began planning this all-virtual jazz fest at the start of 2021, and the music will flow live with some pre-recorded sessions mixed in from six different stages, and will showcase the talents of more than 60 of the most renown and respected jazz talents of our time.

“Our music can be an indispensable spiritual life raft for our turbulent times when we need more sharing and caring than ever. May this important ECJF collaboration be just the beginning of an ever-growing process and practice of team work to make the dream work,” said Todd Barkan, NEA Jazz Master / Keystone Korner Baltimore.

Online guests will be able to flip back and forth from one venue to another to check out each club’s shows. Click Here to Pre-Register:

    Warren Wolf, Vibraphone
    Reginald Cyntje, Trombone
    Tim Green, Alto Sax
    Jamal Brown, Piccolo
    Anna-Lisa Kirby, vocals
    Eze Jackson, spoken word
    John Lee, Guitar
    Obasi Akoto, Bass
    Donnie Johns, Timpani
    Eric Kennedy, Drumset

Ushering in a New Year and a New Era, Obasi Akoto’s Oceanic Jazz Orchestra presents “The Promise,” a multicultural and adventuresome concert led by the visionary bassist and composer Obasi Akoto and an All Star Mid- Atlantic jazz/classical remix featuring Warren Wolf, vibes, piano; Eric Kennedy, drums; Tim Green, alto saxophone; John Lee, guitar; and Akoto’s wife and longtime collaborator, Anna-Lisa Kirby. Special guests include timpanist Donnie Johns, trombonist Reginald Cyntje, flutist Jamal Brown, spoken word artist Eze Jackson and percussionist Jamal Moore.

Bringing together musicians from both jazz and classical backgrounds, diverse instruments which don’t often mix, and compositions which draw inspiration from jazz, folk, rock, folk, tango, and other musical traditions, The Oceanic Jazz Orchestra (OJO) embodies a bold vision: at its core, it is about connection, collaboration, and a genuine celebration of contemporary America in all its endless variety. One hundred years ago, jazz emerged out of a stubborn refusal of musicians to segregate. It’s time again to allow that kind of synergy to blaze a new musical path. “The Promise” is all about that path.

    5:20

The sounds of Korean and American jazz music resonated at Baltimore’s Motor House on July 27th during a special joint concert hosted by the Korean cultural Center Washington, D.C. in collaboration with the Maryland Institute College of Art (MICA) Office of Community Engagement and Station North Arts and Entertainment District.

Jazz Brings Us Together featured a unique collaboration by American jazz saxophonist Craig Allston and his band, and The World Music Group SE:UM, from Korea. Together, the two groups celebrated a love of music shared by Baltimore’s diverse communities.
The evening started out with the classic sounds of Craig Allston’s group.

SE:UM took the stage next. This 5-member ensemble combines classic Western and traditional Korean instruments, seamlessly blending jazz elements with Korean folk and traditional music. The result is an immersive and exhilarating musical experience.

The two groups closed out the night with a joint performance celebrating how jazz, a true form of world music, brings us together.

    3:13

The traditional jazz tune Baltimore (does anyone know the origin of the tune?) is played here by an impromptu ensemble:

Craig Ventresco on guitar. He has played with the Bo Grumpus Trio, has his own solo CD, and also plays with Meredith Axelrod (YouTube's meredithanthraxelrod).

Brad Kay on cornet. Brad is one of Janet Klein's parlor boys and does solo piano work too.

Julia Riley on flute. Julia plays with the Raspberry Jam Band (which doesn't have a web site or any albums yet).

Andrew Barrett (YouTube's KawhackitaRag) on washboard.

Shortly afterward, the jam session grew with the addition of a violin, a tuba, and a second washboard, all sitting and standing around in the Red Lion hotel lobby in Sacramento.
