  • Experimental Free Form Jazz - Improvised Avant Garde Music - Trumpet Trombone Drums Trio

    Hi, nice to meet you.

Today's session (2014-12-19, recorded in Vancouver BC Canada) has the unusual trio format of a trombone, a trumpet and a set of drums. The chordless approach allows an unlimited amount of freedom for the horns and drums to shine.

The members are trying their best to listen to the supple (or not so supple) texture of sounds created by each other. There are many soulful moments for the trombone player, while the drums tend to keep the drive on max and/or cruise control. And then the trumpet flashes those runs that can't be stopped (luckily there aren't any speed zones with this music). It's all very exciting stuff.

Please enjoy this session performed by Free Jazz Vancouver.

Kıvanç Tatar (trumpet) C Walter Lovell (drums) Mark Quigley (trombone)

  • Archie Shepp - The Magic of Ju-Ju - Avant-Garde Jazz

    Archie Shepp - The Magic of Ju-Ju - 1967
    Style: Avant-Garde Jazz
    Release Date April 26, 1967
    Genre: Jazz, Free Jazz

    1. The Magic of Ju-Ju
    2. You're What This Day Is All About
    3. Shazam
    4. Sorry 'Bout That

    Album Atmosphere:
    Complex, Confrontational, Fierce
    Fiery, Intense, Passionate, Aggressive
    Dramatic, Swaggering, Uncompromising
    Urgent, Sophisticated, Spiritual

The Allmusic review by Al Campbell states of the title track Shepp's emotional and fiery tenor takes off immediately, gradually morphing with the five percussionists who perform on instruments including rhythm logs and talking drums. Shepp never loses the initial energy, moving forward like a man possessed as the drumming simultaneously builds into a fury. Upon the final three minutes, the trumpets of Martin Banks and Michael Zwerin make an abrupt brief appearance, apparently to ground the piece to a halt. This is one of Shepp's most chaotic yet rhythmically hypnotic pieces.

  • Protoplasma - - FULL ALBUM Hungary, rock, metal, jazz, progressive AVANT GARDE

This weird collection of art is by Hungarian group Protoplasma. It's extremely well played. For fans of mental breakdowns, sounds that make you stressed out and people with twitches. Good luck achieving anything with your day after listening to this. This really is very, very, very avant garde but if you want a challenging listen, this is it. Let’s put it this way, I’m not uploading this for views but just for an experience. Sort of Captain Beefheart, Gentle Giant and Frank Zappa vibe.

Derek Bailey (January 29, 1930 – December 25, 2005) was an English avant-garde guitarist and leading figure in the free improvisation movement.

Huib Emmer (born September 6, 1951 in Utrecht) is a Dutch composer. He also plays electric guitar and electric bass guitar.

Richard Lowe Teitelbaum (May 19, 1939 – April 9, 2020) was an American composer, keyboardist, and improvisor. A former student of Allen Forte, Mel Powell, and Luigi Nono, he is known for his live electronic music and synthesizer performances. He is a pioneer of brain-wave music

Diamanda Galás (born in San Diego CA, August 29, 1955) is a Greek-American dramatic soprano, composer, pianist, organist, performance artist, and painter. She has received international recognition for creating highly original and thought provoking political performance works.

In the first half of the eighties suddenly Han Buhrs (born in Horn, February 23, 1955) popped up from the pop circuit. Having started as a rock & roll singer in the early eighties, he met singer Yvonne Kroese from The Remotobs. He started writing lyrics for her, because he thought it was poignant that such a good singer had to do without lyrics. With saxophonist Rutger van Otterloo it soon became a trio, The Schismatics, which gained national fame through a television broadcast of The Best of Claxon-festival, an initiative of Maarten Altena and Michel Waisvisz.

The BEST of CLAXON-FESTIVAL© was recorded for a live audience of 26, in the studios of VPRO (Hilversum).

Just Arrived: A 300+ piece LP collection we’ve dubbed “Yet Another Eclectic Collection”!

We love buying and selling classic titles and have been having a successful run of obtaining quality collections, both LP and CD. But every now and then a collection more from the fringes comes in, and we have a special one to talk about today.

However, there is no way to easily describe this wide-ranging assortment of titles. We’ve roughly broken it into three sections:
    Rock, including classic-rock, prog, electronic, art-rock, and experimental, about 100 titles;

    20th Century classical/avant-garde, around 120 pieces; and

    Jazz, including around 80 free-jazz/avant-garde

The collector had a good eye for the unusual, and while there’s some classics (mostly later pressings), there’s scads more from the fringes. These records vary wildly in genre, but somehow, they all come together in theme.

Prices range from a few bucks up to $ 200 or $300 for the super rare. The conditions are, for the most part, excellent. We have adjusted, of course, when appropriate.

    Some of the highlights include:
    Ensemble Al-Salaam “The Sojourner” Strata-East SES-7418, $249.99

Sun Ra “Sub Underground” handmade El-Saturn 92074, $219.99

Harold Budd “Oak of Golden Dreams” Advance FGR-16, $219.99

Lamonte Young “The Well-Tuned Piano” Gramavision 18-8701, $379.99, and

“The Velvet Underground & Nico” Verve V6-5008, 3rd Press , unpeeled banana, $179.99

Please note that these records are sold first come, first served. Many of these titles are in very high demand, so to be as fair as we can to everyone, please do not call us to ask to put any on hold. For those not familiar with our store, sorry, we are a walk-in store only and do not ship.

  • Avant-garde Jazz new arrivals at Princeton Record Exchange June, 2017

Just Arrived: A 1,000+ piece “Eclectic” LP collection from a long-time record aficionado!

Our successful run of obtaining quality collections, LP and CD, continues, and we have a special one to talk about today.

However, there is no way to easily describe this wide-ranging assortment of titles. We’ve roughly broken it into four sections:
    Rock, including classic-rock, prog, electronic, art-rock, and experimental, about 400 titles;
    20th Century classical/avant-garde, around 150 pieces;
Jazz, including around 100 free-jazz/avant-garde, around 400 titles; and
    International, around 80 titles.

The collector had a good eye for the unusual, and while there’s tons of classics (mostly later pressings), there’s scads more from the fringes. These records vary wildly in genre, but somehow they all come together in theme.

Prices range from a few bucks up to $100 or so for the super rare. The conditions are, for the most part, excellent. We have adjusted, of course, when appropriate. As an aside, most of these records were purchased from Prex in the 80’s and have our old, very hard to remove price stickers under the new ones; sorry! We trust you enjoy the new very removable ones we have used for the past couple of years now.

Please note that these records are sold first come, first served. Many of these titles are in very high demand, so to be as fair as we can to everyone, please do not call us to ask to put any on hold. For those not familiar with our store, sorry, we are a walk-in store only and do not ship.

We hope you get a chance to visit us soon. This truly is one of the more diverse collections we’ve ever seen, and we don’t expect these titles to last very long.

Reflections on a trip to New York from the confines of a home studio, “One From Brooklyn” is the debut album by Matt Clark Three.

Matt Clark Three. Jazz influenced grooves. Combining a love of lo-fi loops and samples, and influenced by the avant-garde scenes of New York and Chicago…

“The overall effect creates a dynamic sonic quality, as if a laid-back street-level musical trio were performing their own structured and improvised material but also incorporating the ephemeral swell of sounds around them…” - Jordan Penney,

Featuring collaborations with Mark Wilson (Caaw, Underhound) on double bass and Darren Beckett (Madeleine Peyroux, Lauryn Hill) on drums.

  • Syncopated avant-garde jazz -- Spill

Here's a video snippet accompanied by some experimental piano jazz. Adding to its crude and distorted look, the footage was shot off the reflection of a dead TV-set, and then edited and color graded in Final Cut Pro.

This series of jazz pieces has been my pet project for quite some time now. Ironically, the initial portions of those pieces came about as a fluke while debugging my old DSP programs -- instead of using soundfiles as the input for those programs, I decided to try feeding them some note-lists and then transcribing the output into traditional notation, arranged for a virtual jazz band.

Often my aim is to try develop new directions in music composition -- in this case, music too intricate for any human to play but made to sound as if it indeed were performed on traditional instruments and by real musicians -- a jazz-band playing the most complex syncopated swing as if it were their standard repertoire. Recognizable, yet so unfamiliar.

  • TALE OF AN AFRICAN LOBSTER by Shorty Rogers Avant-Garde Jazz 1953

Shorty Rogers was instrumental in the creation of West Coast Jazz. This number is one of his experimental jazz works from 1953. A bit out there for my tastes, but historically significant. Enjoy!

This recording is a disc jockey promo pressing and plays very well.

  • Free Form Jazz Music - Experimental Avantgarde Music Plunger Trombone Bowed Bass

This take really doesn't have a tonal center for quite a while... the bass is being bowed creating strange new age effects... the drums are keeping a steady beat every once in a while but backs off when necessary... the trombone is wailing with the plunger mute... free form is fun and more people should try it.
