  • Ash - A Life Less Ordinary

    4:25

Now with the addition of guitarist Charlotte Hatherley, poached from London outfit Nightnurse, Ash released ‘A Life Less Ordinary’ in October 1997. Recorded for the Danny Boyle film of the same title, and produced by Arthur Baker, ‘A Life Less Ordinary’ was Ash’s third Top 10 single in a row.

The video includes clips from the film featuring Cameron Diaz and Ewan McGregor and was directed by Hammer & Tongs (Blur - Coffee & TV, Sugergrass - Pumping on Your Stereo). Drummer Rick McMurray was taken ill with bronchitis during the filming of the video and replaced by a crew member for the latter parts.

The lyrics for ‘A Life Less Ordinary’ were inspired by the Robert Graves book ‘White Goddess’, and the track appeared on the US release of the band’s second full length album ‘Nu-clear Sounds’ in 1999.

  • Ash - Kung Fu

    2:17

Released in March 1995, ‘Kung Fu’ is Ash’s paean to martial arts hero Jackie Chan and The Ramones. Eric Cantona’s infamous flying kick dons the cover art. He berated the band, faxing their label, “I spit on your record”.

Written on Boxing Day 1994 at Belfast International Airport, ‘Kung Fu’ is the first Ash single produced by Owen Morris and was recorded using the The Verve’s equipment while they recording their album ‘A Northern Soul’ nearby. The track’s intro samples Close Encounters of the Spooky Kind (Sammo Hung) which Channel 4 had shown over Christmas.

‘Kung Fu’ was also picked up by Jackie Chan himself and the song is used in the title credits to his film Rumble in the Bronx. The track also featured in the soundtrack of the 1995 film ‘Angus’, alongside the band’s debut single ‘Jack Names the Planets’.

‘Kung Fu’ was the first Ash single to feature on the band’s number one debut album ‘1977’, released in May 1996, and has remained a consistent fan favourite in the band’s live sets throughout the band’s 25 year career.

The video was directed by Steven Wells (NME) and Nick Small and filmed at The Venue, New Cross, London.

The single was re-mixed for US release by Rob Cavallo (Green Day, Linkin Park, My Chemical Romance) and Jerry Finn (Blink-182, Green Day, AFI).

    Lyrics:
    Fearless
    I can face the battle
    That's in front of me
    Fearless
    I won't be overcome
    By the darkness
    Push me farther
    Fearless
    I will never fall
    I will rise up

I feel the air around me move
    It rushes into me
    I channel all my strength
    And all my energy
    It's pumping through my veins
    I feel alive inside
    I'm ready for the fight
    The battle for my life

    I'm fearless
    I can face the battle
    That's in front of me
    Fearless
    I won't be overcome
    By the darkness
    Push me farther
    Fearless
    I will never fall
    I will rise up

I hear the thunder crashing down
    It rushes through my bones
    The light flashes around
    More than I've ever known
But still I won't back down
    I'll keep on pushing through
    I'm ready for the fight
    The battle of my life

    Fearless
    I can face the battle
    That's in front of me
    Fearless
    I won't be overcome
    By the darkness
    Push me farther
    Fearless
    I will never fall
    I will rise

    I'm fearless
    I can face the war
    I'm fearless
    I'm stronger than before
    I'm fearless

    Fearless!!!
    You know I'm
    Fearless!!
    I won't back down because I'm
    Fearless!!
I will not fall because I'm
    Fearless!
    Woah!

The rifftastic ‘Burn Baby Burn’, with a scorching hot cheerleader video, put the rock back in the singles chart at Lucky 13 in April 2001. The second single from platinum-selling album ‘Free All Angels’, ‘Burn Baby Burn’ led the way for ‘Free All Angels’ to beat Janet Jackson to the coveted Number One spot when the band released their third full-length album, and follow up to 1998’s ‘Nu-clear Sounds’, in May 2001.

The first of many Ash videos to be directed by Jeff Thomas, the ‘Burn Baby Burn’ video was shot at in the gymnasium Selsdon High School, Croydon and features a troop of cheerleaders and The London Towers basketball team. The cheerleaders joined the band when they performed the single BBC’s iconic Top Of The Pops TV show.

‘Burn Baby Burn’ was awarded Best Single at the 2002 NME and Q Awards. It was also the first song ever played on BBC 6 Music radio station.

After 3 months in Rockfield Studios with maverick Oasis producer Owen Morris Ash emerged with their debut album ‘1977’. Released ahead of the chart topping ‘1977’, ‘Goldfinger’ was the band’s first single to enter the UK Top 5 in April 1996.

Influenced by the Beach Boys, Brian Wilson’s nutso chord changes, and John Barry’s James Bond themes, ‘Goldfinger’ was written across three continents; Tim’s childhood bedroom in Downpatrick, through jetleg induced insomnia in a Japanese hotel room, and on the road in North America.

The video was directed by Mike Brady and filmed in London.

  • Ash - Oh Yeah

    4:52

The summer of 1996 belonged to Ash; following the chart topping ‘1977’ and ‘Goldfinger,’ ‘Oh Yeah’, the fifth single from the band’s number 1 debut album crashed into the UK Top 10. The festival season crescendoed at Reading Festival, with over 60,000 heat-scorched bodies singing along to, ‘Oh Yeah’, the anthem of the summer.

Five consecutive sold out nights at the London Astoria followed, along with the self-funded (and disowned) tour excess documentary ‘Teenage Wildlife’, narrated by (Obi-wan Kenobi) Ewan McGregor.

Produced by Owen Morris and recorded at Rockfield Studios, ‘Oh Yeah’ features backing vocals from Lisa Moorish (Oasis - Fade Away, Warchild). The video was banned by the BBC’s iconic Top Of The Pops TV show.

‘Oh Yeah’ featured in the 1996 episode of RTE’s Reeling in the Years.

    4:01

On tour in the States, a recording session results in the Motown punk of ‘Envy’, the lead single for 2002 Ash best of compilation ‘Intergalactic Sonic Sevens’. Released on Bank Holiday Monday following Ash’s famous Reading Festival performance where the band emerged on stage without any serious injuries despite on-site rumours that a US tour bus crash had left the band unable to play. The single entered the UK charts at number 21 while ‘Intergalactic Sonic Sevens’ earned the band another Top 5 album and gold disc.

Directed by Piper Ferguson the video featured Ash performing on the top of a Hollywood highrise and taking some wild L.A. cabs rides with Andy Dick. Plus look-a-likes with tongue in cheek references to The White Stripes and pals The Hives. The band’s label originally wanted the gay kiss editd out but the band stuck to their guns and the video released high rotation on MTV.

The fifth and final single from the band’s number 1 ‘Free All Angels’, ‘There’s a Star’ was released by Ash in December 2001 and charted at number 13.

Directed by Jeff Thomas (‘Burn Baby Burn’, ‘Sometimes’ and ‘Candy’) and shot in Iceland the ‘There’s A Star’ video was meant to be inspired by the Hoth planet from Star Wars The Empire Strikes Back. Described by bassist Mark Hamilton before shooting: “We're off to Iceland to shoot it up in the mountains, imagine vast area covered in snow, think Hoth in The Empire Strikes Back, we're all dressed Han Solo style with Rebel Alliance logos with rescue flares going up in the night and we're gonna comes across 'Snow Jawas'. ‘Clones’, Ash’s first single from Top 5 album ‘Meltdown’, was released as an Internet-only download in February 2004 and went straight to number 1 in the newly created download charts. ‘Meltdown’ - the band’s fourth full length album - was produced by Foo Fighters producer Nick Rasculinecz and recorded at Sound City Studios, the birthplace of Nirvana’s Nevermind.

During the writing of ‘Meltdown’ Ash were asked to provide music for LucasArt's game Star Wars: Republic Commando, by complete fluke the band had just demoed ‘Clones’. ‘Clones’ featured in the game and Ash played a set, which includes ‘Cantina Band’, at the games launch party in London’s Leicester Square.

The dark and gritty performance video was directed by Jeff Thomas and shot in East End London with the band drenched by a crew member with hose between takes.

    Lyrics:

I always thought I'd be the one
To put a smile on your face
But time passed by and life got hard
    That smile went away
No matter all the things I've tried
I just can't seem to find
The way back to that simple life
If only I could turn back time
Then I would turn back time

    But it's okay
Sometimes we need to just let go
Even though there's things we can't control
    We'll be okay
Sometimes we wish upon a star
And wonder why the good times feel so far away
Sometimes you need to just let go
And say my God You're in control

I never thought we'd end up here
I thought it would work out
But looking back at all those years
    We thought we'd figured out
I never wanted to make you cry and
Watch you struggle through those tears
I always wanted to be the one
To hold you through your fears

    But it's okay
Sometimes we need to just let go
Even though there's things we can't control
    We'll be okay
Sometimes we wish upon a star
And wonder why the good times feel so far away
Sometimes you need to just let go
And say my God You're in control

The only thing left holding on
Is having faith in the unknown
The hope of seeing what's beyond
Even when the light seems low
I feel like I might never know
    If things will ever change

    We'll be okay
    We'll be okay
    We'll be okay
    Everything will be okay
    Everything will be okay

    Lyrics:

    Another night in the darkness
    Another day in the silence
    It's like a bad dream
That you can't wake up from
And all these dreams are like nightmares
They bring the day that you can't keep facing
'Cause you can't face another day

As your life runs by your eyes
You hear a voice from the other side

    Fight for your life
    For your right
    Are you afraid to die
    Is there fear deep inside
Just hang on one more night
I'll be there by your side
    There's no hope in suicide
So hang on for your life
Just hang on one more night
Just hang on one more night
Just hang on one more night

You try to find the path
    That will ease your pain
But the pain will never go away
And now it seems as though
    All the hope is gone
You try to leave you can't move on

As your life runs by your eyes
You hear a voice from the other side

    Fight for your life
    For your right
    Are you afraid to die
    Is there fear deep inside
Just hang on one more night
I'll be there by your side
    There's no hope in suicide
So hang on for your life
Just hang on one more night
Just hang on one more night
Just hang on one more night

But when the tears begin to flow
    Weakness closes in
You feel your life is broken
You don't know if the fear will end
You don't have to be alone
    'Cause there's another way
To wipe away your tears and carry on another day

When the tears begin to flow
    And weakness closes in
You feel your life is broken
You don't know if the fear will end
You don't have to be alone
    'Cause there's another way
To wipe away your tears and carry on another day

    Just reach out your hand
    I'll be there for you
    I'll be by your side
    I'll fight for your life

    Just reach out your hand
    I'll be there for you
    I'll be by your side
    I'll fight for your life

    I'll Fight for your life
    For your right
    Don't be afraid 'cause
I'll wipe the tears from your eyes
Just hang on one more night
I'll be there by your side
    There's no hope in suicide
So hang on for your life
Just hang on one more night
Just hang on one more night
    Just hang on one more

  • Ash - You Cant Have It All

    3:52

‘You Can’t Have It All’ was the first single from Ash’s 2007 album ‘Twilight of the Innocent’. The first single after the band returned to their original trio line up following Charlotte Hatherley’s departure in January 2006, ‘You Can’t Have It All’ charted at number 16 and gave Ash yet another Top 20 hit.

Ash frontman Tim Wheeler describes the song as “a bitchy love song, dealing with bi-polar emotions. It's got a really big driving bassline and the beat in the verses is almost dancey. But then the chorus is classic Ash bubblegum punk-pop.

The video was directed by Jeff Thomas - who directed ‘Burn Baby Burn’, ‘Orpheus’ and ‘Starcrossed’ videos - and filmed at Dukes Island Studios in London. Tim Wheeler and Mark Hamilton nearly missed the shot when their flight from New York was cancelled, leaving drummer Rick McMurray to start by shooting his solo parts.

‘Arcadia’ is the third single released by Ash from their A-Z Series, which saw the band release 26 singles in 2009 and 2010. The melody and chorus of the song where written “somewhere between Union Square and the Flatiron”, while the lyrics were written on a flight back to New York after the band’s appearance at Kendal Calling Festival.

A live favourite of fans, the video footage for the ‘Arcadia’ video was shot during Ash’s 26 date A to Z Tour which saw the band zig-zag across the UK to tour towns and cities in alphabetical order. Directed by Josh Kletzkin.

Willow Ash have taken a sudden foray on this long player; entering into a 1970's inspired world of heavy blues/heavy psych resulting in this bright, almost jangly start to the concept album, slowly degrading as it plays out into earthen, sludge filled riffage.

According to Google, Hypnagogia is stated as The transitional state of consciousness between wakefulness and sleep. It's the opposite of hypnopompia, which is the transitional state that occurs before you wake up. During hypnagogia, it's common to experience involuntary and imagined experiences. These are referred to as hypnagogic hallucinations. The album idea was conceptualized during the summer of 2020 when singer/guitarist Christopher Guest battled the phenomenon off and on for the majority of June and July. It was awful Guest is quoted as saying, the hallucinations are ridiculous, almost silly at times but then they'll take this dark turn and it'll all at once become absolutely terrifying. No matter what, there is an immense feeling of fear or stress; like you know something isn't right but you can't stop what's happening. The feeling is there from the opening few seconds of the intro which symbolizes the confusion of Hypnagogia, the whirlwind of action fought off only by the alarm clock. The feeling of the record as a whole is a fake, manic happiness laid as a thin veil over top an ocean of dark, almost murderous intent, much like a carnival of horrors.

    3:57

Ash’s unique subscription service - The A-Z Series - run from the band’s website and own label Atomic Heart Records was kicked off in October 2009 with the release of ballad ‘True Love 1980’.

‘True Love 1980’ was promptly followed by another Ash innovation, the A to Z Tour. The band embark on an alphabetical tour of the UK, a brave – if not foolish – trip around the British Isles from Aldershot to Zennor, bringing the Rock back to some of the nation’s lesser known music venues.

    Video directed by Daniel Garcia.

  • The Ash Wilson Band - The Tuesday Night Music Club - 140921

    53:05

A review by Ken Jackson, one of our resident photographers at The Club:

One of the best nights ever at the TNMC . Ash Wilson ,Phil Wilson and Roger Innis doing what they love . My apologies in advance for the enormous amount of pictures posted ,the truth is I could easily have posted 4 times as many that I thought were worthy of putting up on Facebook. Ash and his brother, Phil on Drums with Roger on Bass gave a sublime performance and at the end of their two action packed sets the audience rose as one to show their appreciation. Joined on Stage for a short time by Matt Long another of my favourite musicians. Live music really doesn't get any better than this.

When Ash Wilson, Phil Wilson and Roger Inniss took to the stage at The Tuesday Night Music Club sparks flew. A quite astonishing night - when someone who has been to almost every show at The Club says it was 'One of the best nights ever at The TNMC' you know it must have been something very special!
