  • Genius of Aruna Sairam | Kalinga Nartana Tillana | Krishnas Serpent Dance | Music of India

    4:48

#darbarfestival | An extraordinary vocal recreation of Lord Krishna’s mythical battle with Kaliya, the fearsome five-headed snake who boiled the waters of the Yamuna River around them.

    Learn more about the music:
Kalinga Nartana Tillana is Aruna Sairam’s vocal rendition of Lord Krishna’s mythical battle with Kaliya, the fearsome five-headed snake who boiled the waters of the Yamuna River around him as they fought. It is based on a 6th century composition by Oothukkadu Venkata Subba Iyer, complete with rhythmic vocalisations to describe Krishna’s battle dance, and the hissing sounds of the snake. The music is set to the pentatonic Raga Gambhiranata, in the 8-beat Adi Tala.

Aruna Sairam’s voice brings a husky authority to modern Carnatic music. She first learnt to sing by listening to her mother and is part of a long line of female musicians. The direct teaching lineage stretches back over 200 years, to the singers and dancers of the Tamil court. She is an exponent of ‘pure’ Carnatic singing but also looks outwards, with collaborations ranging from jazz and Sufi to Gregorian chant and film scores. She sings in 12 different languages, and vice-chairs the Sangeet Natak Akademi, India’s premier national music and dance institution.

She pulls no punches when it comes to the psychological obstacles faced by female musicians today: “You’re constantly told you’re not good enough…it can be more difficult to be in touch with your inner talents, as society expects women to nourish others first.” Listen to more of Aruna here:

    Lyrics:
Is reach into the heart of you
Is as simple and true as the love you inspire in me
    So let me fall

If I go, would you wait? Would you wonder
Would you know what I'm thinking and why I'm ashamed
Of the girl I am and the stranger that I became
Hold tight to the heart of an angel you'll never know
'Cuz her face looks a little like mine
And it keeps you going just knowing I'm here tonight

So let me fall, let me love you
Let me free your inner child
Let me sit inside your silence
Let me ease the hurt you hide
    'Cuz I'm alive, I'm unlucky
I'm a line to fine to trace
But I could be your consolation
If you'd be my saving grace

My high and wild world is the shape of a sound that can't be heard
But it rings when I'm unraveled by you
There's a quiet storm and my skin gets torn and I wake brand new
    Higher and brighter than yesterday
But I'm still a dark, mysterious night
When the sun descends and the moon leads you to my side

So let me fall, let me love you
Let me free your inner child
Let me sit inside your silence
Let me ease the hurt you hide
    'Cuz I'm alive, I'm unlucky
I'm a line to fine to trace
But I could be your consolation
If you'd be my saving grace

Is reach into the heart of you
Is as simple and true as the love you inspire in me
    So let me fall

All I wanna do is reach into the heart of you
All I wanna be is as simple and true as the love you inspire in me
So let me fall, let me fall

  • Amazing Carnatic Music | Raga Shanmukhapriya | Aruna Sairam | Music of India

    5:54

#darbarfestival | Aruna Sairam leads a 5-piece Carnatic group through the ominous Raga Shanmukhapriya, often associated with warlike deities such as Murugan and Shiva.

    Learn more about the music:
Aruna Sairam’s voice brings a husky authority to modern Carnatic music. She first learnt to sing by listening to her mother and is part of a long line of female musicians. The direct teaching lineage stretches back over 200 years, to the singers and dancers of the Tamil court. Shanmukhapriya’s ominous melodic structure is often associated with Murugan, the god of war, and Shiva, the destroyer. It is a sampoorna [seven-note] ragam, ascending and descending symmetrically as SR₂G₂M₂PD₁N₂S. There is a wide interval jump between Ri and Gi, and its distinctive shape has been widely used for song composition for centuries.

    Lyrics

I was listening to the ocean
I saw a face in the sand
But when I picked it up
Then it vanished away from my hands, down
    I had a dream I was seven
Climbing my way in a tree
I saw a piece of heaven
    Waiting, impatient, for me, down

And I was running far away
Would I run off the world someday?
    Nobody knows, nobody knows
I was dancing in the rain
    I felt alive and I can't complain
    But now take me home
Take me home where I belong
    I can't take it anymore

    I was painting a picture
The picture was a painting of you
And for a moment I thought you were here
But then again, it wasn't true, down
And all this time I have been lying
Oh, lying in secret to myself
I've been putting sorrow on the farthest place on my shelf
And I was running far away
Would I run off the world someday?…

  • Maadu Meikum Kanne by Padmashri Awardee Sangita Kalanidhi Smt. Aruna Sairam @ Isha Yoga Center 2013

    8:11

Here is an amazing rendition of Maadu Meikum Kanne by Smt. Aruna Sairam. Her voice is so strong and unique it is really exhilarating to hear her. She sings the song with so much affection which makes the song very special and appealing.

This song is a dialog between Lord Krishna as a child and his mother Yasodha. Krishna wants to go out to play and rear the cattle while Yasodha tries to stop him giving reasons such as ‘it is a very sunny day, Little Krishna might be attacked by wild animals and thieves and so on.' Yasodha, the loving mother also attempts to lure Baby Krishna with the things he likes. But Little Krishna doesn’t heed to her request and instead, answers all her worries very smartly and finally he gets to go out to play.

    **About Aruna Sairam**
Aruna Sairam (Padma Shri) is a Carnatic vocalist, composer, collaborator, humanitarian, and speaker. In addition to her performances in India, Aruna has taken Carnatic music to the global arena, at prestigious venues including the Royal Albert Hall and Carnegie Hall. Currently Vice Chairperson of the Sangeet Natak Akademi, Delhi, she was appointed in 2008 by the Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu as Advisor to the Department of Culture. Aruna works towards the musical education of underprivileged students, through the Nadayogam Trust, which she founded in 2011. Aruna is grateful for the training she received under her mother Rajalakshmi Sethuraman and the legendary T. Brinda, and the mentorship from several masters throughout her musical journey. Her music erased geographic borders when she was the first to incorporate Abhang, a Western Indian musical form, into a traditional, South Indian concert.

    More about the music:

This thillana emerged in the 19th century and gained popularity with the renditions of the famous Harikatha exponent, Late Brahmashri Needamangalam Krishnamurthi Bhagavathar. Though essentially suitable for classical dance performances and Harikatha (a traditional Hindu discourse that explores stories from epics through music), this piece has become a popular presentation in Carnatic vocal music because of its charming and vibrant gait.

Kalinga Narthana is a narrative about Lord Krishna’s mythical battle with Kaliya, the fearsome five-headed snake who boiled and poisoned the waters of the Yamuna River. ‘Kalinga Narthana,’ literally translates to ‘dance of the Kaliya serpent’ and is recorded in the Indian epic Mahabharata, which is also the world’s longest epic believed to have taken place 5000 years ago.

Sairam’s poetic interpretation of the thillana is extraordinary. Defying conventions, she adds her inimitable charm and drama to this piece by delivering an upbeat, groovy recitation of the thillana in her sensuous, sonorous voice. As she doles out the syllables of the thillana with authority, Kumar and Prakash play in excellent synchrony, blending their instruments with the mnemonics of the composition.

  • Taye Yasoda by Padmashri Awardee Sangita Kalanidhi Smt. Aruna Sairam

    24:33

Today is Krishna Jayanti, the day when our dear Krishna (or Kitta, as we affectionately call him at our home) was born. On this very special occasion, I present to you a song set at the time when Krishna was growing up in Gokul. He had become quite an endearing prankster who kept the innocent and simple people of Gokul bewitched. This composition, ‘Taye Yasoda’, by Oothukadu Venkata Subbaiyer talks about all the antics of Krishna and how the gopis complained to Yashoda about his pranks.

The video is from a 2013 programme called ‘Maadu Meikkum Kanne’ organized by SS International. In this concert, I was accompanied by Padma Shankar on violin, J. Vaidyanadhan on mridangam, Karthick on ghatam, Sruthi Sagar on flute, and Kiran on tabla.

She pulls no punches when it comes to the psychological obstacles faced by female musicians today: “You’re constantly told you’re not good enough…it can be more difficult to be in touch with your inner talents, as society expects women to nourish others first.”

  • Bhetinu Chutinu - Aruna Lama/Gopal Yonjan

    2:25

Ever since I first heard this song, this has been on my list. The lyrics is very beautiful. We somehow tend to believe in 'forever' since our childhood. But life teaches us to let go and enjoy the moments in present and cherish the memories.
Dedicated to all the people who have crossed our paths and remain in our memories and to the ones to come in life hereafter.
Let's live each day and love anyway as life goes on ...
    Cheers!!

Aruna's 'The End' saw the American producer/singer/DJ burst back onto the scene with another highly anticipated release, teaming up again with Dutch talent Husman. The track's raw performance and emotional lyric was an inspiring account of hitting rock bottom and fighting her way back up, a story which was profiled in-depth in an exclusive and highly buzzed about interview with EDM tastemaker publication Magnetic Magazine, Why Aruna Disappeared, which went on to become one of their top trending articles for several months running.

Passing the torch on her heartfelt story then was no easy feat, but with an impressive variety of pioneering producers, 'The End (Remixes)' sees Aruna's anthem reframed in five unique new ways.

Beginning with Canadian Alex Klingle, 'The End' takes on a gliding new Progressive from, filled with elegant melodies & poignant chords which have brought the producer to such critical acclaim of late.

Italian producer BLASTERZ takes the original on a beefed up Progressive House journey through warm pads, smooth synths and driving bass to create a truly stylish rendition of the original.

UK-based Culture Code injects his well-respected melodic Dubstep talents into the release with dreamy breakdowns accompanied by throbbing bass, sweeping chords, pulsing triplet drops and delicate FX.

Fellow UK producer Livewire brings his bouncing Drum & Bass style to the table with a completely reworked, summer-focused effort which sees Aruna's vocals shaken up and dotted alongside uplifting synths and brooding bass.

Lastly, young Dutch enigma WRLD brings his unique approach to 'The End' with a beautifully percussive and paradoxically quirky version to tie off the release.

With one of Aruna's most evocative singles yet, 'The End' Remixes see the established singer/producer's remarkable story recreated in true style.

Following on from the release of her exceptional debut mix compilation album 'The Hot List, Vol.1' which peaked at #36 on the iTunes Dance Top 200 and continues to receive extensive support, Aruna delivers a timely dose of two of the compilation's hottest tracks, her very own brand new singles, set for a February EP release on Enhanced.

With a 2015 spent hard at work in the studio, Aruna's newest records 'What If' & 'Sunrise' position the seasoned producer/DJ/vocalist at the forefront of a new fusion of melodic Trance with progressive house flavors. 'What If' opens the release and sees Aruna teaming up with ever-present duo Ost & Meyer in an anthemic production merging Aruna's infectious, emotive vocals with an unmistakable, chugging energy to form an emphatic opener.

'Sunrise' ties up the release with a techy yet summery combination of flexing basslines and sunsoaked chords perfectly matched next to another helping of sublime vocals from Aruna. Teaming up with Aerosoul, 'Sunrise' showcases the musical voice of both producers to create a nicely balanced, uplifting chunk of melodic Progressive House peppered with subtle Deep House textures.

  • Trialogue: Aruna Sairam, Dominique Vellard, Noureddine Tahiri

    3:23

The director of the Ensemble Gilles Binchois, Dominique Vellard, has been spending many years searching for connections be they of intellectual, spiritual or musical natures with non-western traditions, searching for links and ties between them that will lead to a deeper understanding and awareness of medieval European chant (and Vellard has been one of the leading specialists in this area for some three decades). His approach has entailed searching out meeting points between these musical cultures to bring them closer together and to draw out their musical qualities, but never in the sense of any unwarranted combining or blending. The meeting of Vellard in the middle 1990s with the legendary South Indian singer Aruna Saïram paved the way for an ensuing rich musical and human dialogue, and led them to give over 30 concerts in Europe, India, Morocco and Malaysia as well as recording an album for EMI in 1999. The Islamic tradition was brought within the scope of this adventure with Vellard and Saïram s joint collaboration from 2002 onwards with the Moroccan singer Noureddine Tahiri; a new high point is now being reached with the release of this new Glossa recording, 'Trialogue'. Together with their instrumentalists they provide intensely moving performances, with music of a great beauty, all set to captivate serious music lovers from world to classical.
