    2:23

    I ♥ #oldies
Around The World (1961) - CONNIE FRANCIS - Lyrics
    Around the world I've searched for you;
I traveled on when hope was gone
    To keep a rendezvous.
    I knew somewhere, sometime, somehow,
You'd look at me and I would see
    The smile you're smiling now.
It might have been in County Down,
Or in New York, or gay Paree,
    Or even London town.
No more will I go all around the world
For I have found my world in you.

  • Perry Como Live - Around the World

    2:59

The Perry Como Show. May 4, 1957.
    With Mitchell Ayres' Orchestra.

Around the World was the theme tune from the 1956 movie Around the World in 80 Days. In the film, only an instrumental version of the song appeared, although the vocal version has become by far the better known one. The song was written by Harold Adamson and Victor Young; Young died in 1956, several weeks after the film's release and he received the Academy Award for Best Music, Scoring of a Dramatic or Comedy Picture posthumously. Young's orchestral version was a #13 hit on the Billboard charts in 1957. The recording by Bing Crosby was the B-side of the Victor Young version in 1957, on Festival SP45-1274 inLive Australia, and was a joint charting success.

Sandy Nelson (born Sander L Nelson, December 1, 1938, Santa Monica, California) is an American drummer. Nelson, one of the best-known rock drummers of the early 1960s, had several solo instrumental Top 40 hits and was a session drummer on many other well-known hits, and released over 30 albums. Let There Be Drums is a 1961 instrumental song composed by Sandy Nelson and guitarist Richard Podolor, who later became a renowned record producer. The piece is a guitar and drums duet and is an early example of surf music. His song Teen Beat, on Original Sound Records, rose to #4 on the Billboard Hot 100 chart in 1959. It sold over one million copies, and was awarded a gold disc. Subsequently he signed with the Imperial record label and pounded out two more Top 40 hits, Let There Be Drums, which went to #7 on the Billboard Hot 100, and Drums Are My Beat. In December 1961. Near the end of 1963, Nelson was in a motorcycle accident. The injuries necessitated amputation of his right foot and part of that leg. Nonetheless, Nelson continued to record into the early 1970s, releasing two or three albums a year, consisting of cover versions of popular hits plus a few original compositions. ~ Info on Sandy Nelson was derived from Wikipedia.

  • Sam Cooke - A Change Is Gonna Come

    3:11

A Change Is Gonna Come” by Sam Cooke

    Lyrics:
I was born by the river in a little tent
Oh, and just like the river I’ve been a-runnin’ ever since.
It’s been a long, a long time comin’,
    but I know, oh-oo-oh,
a change gon’ come, oh yes, it will.

It’s been too hard living but I’m afraid to die
‘Cause I don’t know what’s up there beyond the sky
It’s been a long, a long time comin’,
    But I know, oh-oo-oh,
A change gonna come, oh yes, it will.

I go to the movie and I go downtown
Somebody keep tellin’ me don’t hang around.
    It’s been a long, a long time coming, but I know, oh-oo-oh,
A change gon’ come, oh yes, it will.

Then I go, oh-oo-oh, to my brother and I say, brother, help me please.
But he winds up knocking me back down on my knees, oh.

There’ve been times that I thought I couldn’t last for long
But now I think I’m able to carry on
It’s been a long, a long time comin’,
But I know, oh-oo-oh, a change gonna come, oh yes, it will.

  • The Spinners ~ Ill Be Around 1972 Disco Purrfection Version

    9:53

Detroit, Michigan was a fertile breeding ground for industry and the arts during its best days. The Domingos first got together in 1954 with charter members Billy Henderson, Henry Fambrough, Pervis Jackson, C. P. Spencer, and James Edwards. Edwards was the first to depart and smooth voiced Bobby Smith was recruited. Then Spencer left with George Dixon taking over and the group changed their name to The Spinners in 1961. Their first single That's What Girls Are Made For on Harvey Fuqua's Tri-Phi Records went top 30 in the US and introduced the world to Bobby Smith who would be the voice on most of the Spinners recordings including this one. After a few more personnel changes, Tri-Phi got bought out by Berry Gordy and The Spinners became part of the Motown stable of artists. Excited as they were to be signed to such a prestigious label, it was not long before that enthusiasm dimmed along with their commercial appeal. Motown responded by having the members act as tour personnel babysitters, drivers and administrative help, moving them to the VIP imprint, a third rate label. The Spinners had little success being with Motown and were more than ready to move on when their contract expired. GC Cameron, the voice on It's A Shame left the band and was replaced by Philippe Wynne in early 1972. On the word of Aretha Franklin they were signed to Atlantic and paired with producer Jimmy Roach who cut four sides with them. Those tracks were shelved once label president Henry Allen heard them and set about looking for another producer. Enter Thom Bell, who Allen hired to work for Atlantic. Given a choice of any artist on the roster, he picked the Spinners as he had been a fan of their music since their first hit on Tri-Phi Records That's What Girls Are For in 1961. During the summer of 1972, Bell worked with the group on four sides, since Atlantic had already spent $20,000$ on the abandoned Jimmy Roach sessions and did not want to spend much more. He composed a song written in three chords and took it to Sigma Studios, home of the Sound Of Philadelphia. Veteran musicians Bobby Eli, Ronnie Baker, Earl Young, Roland Chambers, Larry Washington and Vince Montana played on the track, with Don Renaldo directing the strings. The musicians mused at the simplicity of the song and set about jamming, taking all of forty minutes to record the music track. Bell's writing partner lyricist Linda Creed, was in the process of setting up her wedding and unable to help with the lyrics, begged off. Thom scoured the Sigma offices to find a lyricist and then walked into Bunny Sigler's office to find Phil Hurtt. Hurtt had gone to high school with Bell and was more than ready to write lyrics that would fit Bell's exacting standards. Overnight, Hurtt wrote the words that would create an R&B classic. The Spinners went in and nailed the vocals on I'll Be Around. Alas, it was relegated to the B side of How Could I Let You Get Away which was their official debut Atlantic single. DJs who played the record, flipped the single and found the hit playing I'll Be Around and forgetting the other side. They were right as the tune took off in a big way and proved that DJ's were influencing the pop music landscape. The single hit the Hot 100 chart for the week ending September 16, 1972 at #74 and peaked at #3 but spent five weeks at #1 on the R&B charts, an auspicious start to a stellar third career for a supposedly third rate band.

  • Brenda Lee - Emotions

    2:40

Atlanta. She was the second daughter of Rubin and Grace Tarpley. The youngster showed distinctive vocal talent at age 3, won her first singing contest when she was 5 and was performing regularly on an Atlanta radio station when she was 7. It was at about that time that a TV producer in Augusta, Ga., changed her name to Brenda Lee. In 1953, when she was 9, her father died in a construction accident.

Country singer Red Foley heard Lee when she was around 10 years old and subsequently invited her to appear with him on the popular TV show, Ozark Jubilee. Her popularity and high visibility soon won her guest shots on such popular network programs as The Ed Sullivan Show and The Perry Como Show.

In 1956, Lee signed with Decca Records, where she later united with the legendary producer Owen Bradley, who would oversee most of her hits. She charted her first pop single, One Step at a Time, in 1957, but it made it only to No. 43. (The song did, however, go to No. 15 on the country rankings.) Though it would take a few years to break in the U.S., her early records sold well in Europe. She toured France in 1959 and has since established herself internationally as one of the most visible and beloved ambassadors of country music.

It wasn't until 1960 when Lee took Sweet Nothin's to No. 4 on the pop charts that she made a major impact as a recording artist. Over the next 13 years, she scored two No. 1's (I'm Sorry and I Want to Be Wanted), four Top 5s and five Top 10s. While its short seasonal nature kept it from ever topping the charts, her Rockin' Around the Christmas Tree, recorded in 1958, has become a holiday classic. A spellbinding stage performer, the diminutive (4 feet 11 inches) vocalist was dubbed Little Miss Dynamite following the release of her second charted single, Dynamite, in 1957.

In 1962, during a Jackie Wilson concert at the fairgrounds in Nashville, Lee met her future husband, Charles (Ronnie) Shacklett. They were married on April 24, 1963, while Lee, still in her teens, was at the height of her record chart popularity. In spite of the pressures of show business, her marriage has endured. She and her husband have two daughters, Julie LeAnn (born in 1964) and Jolie Lenee (born in 1969).

Just as her pop presence was waning, Lee struck it big on the country charts. Between 1973 and 1975, she had six consecutive Top 10 hits on Decca's successor label, MCA. She continued to inhabit the country charts through the '80s and '90s with Tell Me What It's Like, The Cowgirl and the Dandy and Broken Trust (with the Oak Ridge Boys) all going Top 10.

Apart from performing, Lee is a tireless supporter of the Nashville music community at large and of numerous charitable organizations. She has served on the boards of the Country Music Association and the Recording Academy (the Grammy organization) and has been active with the Kidney Foundation, the American Cancer Society, the Multiple Sclerosis and Cerebral Palsy organizations and the March of Dimes.

Lee was elected to the Country Music Hall of Fame in 1997 and to the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2002. Her autobiography, Little Miss Dynamite: The Life and Times of Brenda Lee, was published in 2003

    Jet Song

    When you're a Jet,
You're a Jet all the way
    From your first cigarette
    To your last dyin' day.

    When you're a Jet,
If the spit hits the fan,
    You got brothers around,
    You're a family man!

    You're never alone,
    You're never disconnected!
    You're home with your own:
    When company's expected,
    You're well protected!

    Then you are set
    With a capital J,
    Which you'll never forget
    Till they cart you away.
    When you're a Jet,
    You stay a Jet!

    [spoken]
I know Tony like I know me. I guarantee you can count him in.

ACTION: In, out, let's get crackin'.

A-RAB: Where you gonna find Bernardo?

RIFF: At the dance tonight at the gym.

BIG DEAL: But the gym's neutral territory.
    RIFF: [innocently]
I'm gonna make nice there! I'm only gonna challenge him.

    A-RAB: Great, Daddy-O!

RIFF: So everybody dress up sweet and sharp.

    ALL [sing]
Oh, when the Jets fall in at the cornball dance,
We'll be the sweetest dressin' gang in pants!
And when the chicks dig us in our Jet black ties,
They're gonna flip, gonna flop, gonna drop like flies!

RIFF: [Spoken] Hey. Cool. Easy. Sweet. Meet Tony and me at ten. And walk tall!

    A-RAB: We always walk tall!

    BABY JOHN: We're Jets!

    ACTION: The greatest!

    ACTION and BABY JOHN [sing]
    When you're a Jet,
You're the top cat in town,
    You're the gold medal kid
    With the heavyweight crown!

    A-RAB, ACTION, BIG DEAL
    When you're a Jet,
    You're the swingin'est thing:
    Little boy, you're a man;
    Little man, you're a king!

    ALL
    The Jets are in gear,
    Our cylinders are clickin'!
    The Sharks'll steer clear
    'Cause ev'ry Puerto Rican's a lousy chicken!

    Here come the Jets
Like a bat out of hell.
    Someone gets in our way,
    Someone don't feel so well!

    Here come the Jets:
    Little world, step aside!
    Better go underground,
    Better run, better hide!

    We're drawin' the line,
    So keep your noses hidden!
    We're hangin' a sign,
    Says Visitors forbidden
    And we ain't kiddin'!

    Here come the Jets,
    Yeah! And we're gonna beat
    Ev'ry last buggin' gang
    On the whole buggin' street!
    On the whole!
    Ever!
    Mother!
    Lovin'!
    Street!
    Yeah!

You're the meanest old woman that I've ever seen.
I guess if you said so
I'd have to pack my things and go. That's right

Hit the road Jack and don't you come back no more, no more, no more, no more.
Hit the road Jack and don't you come back no more.
    What you say?
Hit the road Jack and don't you come back no more, no more, no more, no more.
Hit the road Jack and don't you come back no more.

Now baby, listen baby, don't ya treat me this-a way
Cause I'll be back on my feet some day.
Don't care if you do 'cause it's understood
you ain't got no money you just ain't no good
Well, I guess if you say so
I'd have to pack my things and go. That's right

Hit the road Jack and don't you come back no more, no more, no more, no more.
Hit the road Jack and don't you come back no more.
    What you say?
Hit the road Jack and don't you come back no more, no more, no more, no more.
Hit the road Jack and don't you come back no more.

    Well
don't you come back no more.
    Uh, what you say?
don't you come back no more.
    I didn't understand you
don't you come back no more.
    You can't mean that
don't you come back no more.
    Oh, now baby, please
don't you come back no more.
What you tryin' to do to me?
don't you come back no more.
Oh, don't treat me like that
don't you come back no more.

    Just a small town girl
    Livin' in a lonely world
    She took the midnight train
    Goin' anywhere
    Just a city boy
Born and raised in South Detroit
    He took the midnight train
    Goin' anywhere

  • Ivo Malec: Dahovi

    7:15

Ivo Malec (*1925): Dahovi, per nastro magnetico (1961).

In its original form, Malec's Dahovi is music composed for Piotr Kamler's film, Structures, consisting of abstract images which determined the piece's fundamental architecture. In order to better circumscribe the musical content of the work, its architecture was later slightly modified in a way to make it free from its symbiotic role. The Serbo-Croatian word Dahovi means respiration, breathing. What is involved in the new condition of the work is to set into play, into counterpoint, into movement, small square surfaces (shaped in such a way that they remain within breathings that are almost white), then to color them either by changing their own rhythms, dimensions and intensities, or by bursts and scintillations of foreign sound objects which, now and then, project upon them different lights.

  • Little Richard - All Around The World

    2:23

    LITTLE RICHARD’S BEST SONG:
Richard Wayne Penniman (born December 5, 1932), known by his stage name Little Richard, is an American recording artist, songwriter and musician. An influential figure in popular music and culture for more than six decades, Little Richard's most celebrated work dates from the mid-1950s, when his dynamic music and charismatic showmanship laid the foundation for rock and roll. His music also played a key role in the formation of other popular music genres, including soul and funk. Little Richard influenced numerous singers and musicians across musical genres from rock to hip-hop; his music impacted the rhythm and blues era for future generations to come, and his performances and headline-making thrust his career right into the mix of American popular music. Little Richard has been honored by many institutions, including inductions into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame and the Songwriters Hall of Fame. He is the recipient of Lifetime Achievement Awards from The Recording Academy and the Rhythm and Blues Foundation. Little Richard's Tutti Frutti (1955) was included in the Library of Congress' National Recording Registry in 2010, claiming the unique vocalizing over the irresistible beat announced a new era in music. In 2015, the National Museum of African American History and Culture honored Little Richard for his pivotal role in the formation of popular music genres and in helping to shatter the color line on the music charts changing American culture forever.

  • John Cage: Variations II

    26:19

    ______________John Cage 100 (1912-2012)__________

John Cage (1912-1992): Variations II, For any number of players and any sound producing means. Version for amplified piano (1961).

    David Tudor, pianoforte.

I believe that the use of noise to make music will continue and increase until we reach a music produced through the aid of electrical instruments that will make available for musical purposes any and all sounds that can be heard. (John Cage 1937).

The materials of this work consist of 5 small transparencies with a single point each, and 6 larger tranparencies with one line each. These may be superimposed in any way, creating a configuration of the points and lines, to be interpreted as a way of producing sounds. This is done by dropping perpendiculars from the points to all of the lines (creating a total of 30 perpendiculars). Measurements of the perpendiculars are used to obtain readings for frequency, amplitude, timbre, duration, point of occurence in an established period of time and the structure of the event (number of sounds).
