words and music by Arlo Guthrie

    CHORUS:
    I don't want a pickle
Just want to ride on my motorsickle
    And I don't want a tickle
'Cause I'd rather ride on my motorsickle
And I don't want to die
I just want to ride on my motorcy...cle

It was late last night the other day
I thought I'd go up and see Ray
So l went up and I saw Ray
There was only one thing Ray could say, was:

    CHORUS

Just last week I was on my bike
I run into a friend named Mike
Run into my friend named Mike
Mike no longer has a bike. He cries:

    3:30

In Times Like These by Arlo Guthrie

I think that this is a very fitting song four our upcoming transition from the Bush administration to the Obama years. It sort of tracks the darkness of the mood for many of us from 9/11 to the present.

In times like these, when night surrounds me
and I am weary, my heart is worn
And the songs they're singing don't mean nothing,
cheap refrains play on and on

The storm is here, the lightning flashes,
    between commercials, they're taking names
singers run to where the cash is,
it's just another link in slavery's chain

I see the storm clouds rise above me,
the sky is dark and the night has come
I walk alone along this highway,
where strangers gather one by one

    When leaders profit from deep divisions;
when the tears of friends remain unsung
In times like these, it's good to remember,
these times will go, in times to come

I see the storm clouds rise above me,
the sky is dark and the night has come
I walk alone along this highway,
where friends have gathered one by one

I know the storm will soon be over,
the howling winds will cease to be
I walk with friends from every nation,
on freedoms highway, in times like these

When The Ship Comes In written by Bob Dylan
    Lyrics courtesy of

Oh the time will come up
    When the winds will stop
And the breeze will cease to be breathin’
Like the stillness in the wind
    Before the hurricane begin
The hour that the ship comes in

    And the sea will split
    And the ships will hit
And the sands on the shoreline will be shaking
    And the tide will sound
    And the waves will pound
And the morning will be a-breaking

    The fishes will laugh
As they swim out of the path
And the seagulls they’ll be smiling
And the rocks on the sand
    Will proudly stand
The hour that the ship comes in

And the words that are used
For to get the ship confused
Will not be understood as they’re spoken
For the chains of the sea
Will have busted in the night
And be buried on the bottom of the ocean

    A song will lift
    As the mainsail shifts
And the boat drifts onto the shoreline
    And the sun will respect
    Every face on the deck
The hour that the ship comes in

    And the sands will roll
    Out a carpet of gold
For your wearied toes to be a-touchin’
    And the ship’s wise men
    Will remind you once again
That the whole wide world is watchin’

    Oh the foes will rise
With the sleep still in their eyes
And they’ll jerk from their beds and think they’re dreamin’
But they’ll pinch themselves and squeal
And they'll know that it’s for real
The hour that the ship comes in

    Then they’ll raise their hands
Sayin’ We’ll meet all your demands
But we’ll shout from the bow Your days are numbered
    And like Pharoah’s tribe
They’ll be drownded in the tide
And like Goliath, they’ll be conquered.

We just received a wonderful note from Peter Yarrow to Arlo,

ARLO'S WONDERFUL VIDEO FOR MARY'S MEMORIAL CELEBRATION:

    Dear Arlo,

I cannot tell you how grateful I am for this effort on your part. It's so
very moving, and even though it's not inherently a tearjerker it brings
the kinds of tears to the eyes that ennoble the struggle, as well as Mary's
    life.

Your having done this for her, Arlo, our friend, means more than I can say.

Love goes out to you in so many, many ways. In this time when in as sense
the bottom line is being shared, your own voice will touch the hearts of
    those attending.

Please thank your family as well for us. We're grateful in full measure.

    Love,

    Your brother, Peter

  • ARLO GUTHRIE | CITY OF NEW ORLEANS | HQ AUDIO )))

    4:35

Arlo Davy Guthrie (born July 10, 1947) is an American folk singer-songwriter. Like his father, Woody Guthrie, he is known for singing songs of protest against social injustice, and storytelling while performing songs. Guthrie's best-known work is his debut piece, Alice's Restaurant Massacree, a satirical talking blues song about 18 minutes in length that has since become a Thanksgiving anthem. His only top-40 hit was a cover of Steve Goodman's City of New Orleans. His song Massachusetts was named the official folk song of the state in which he has lived most of his adult life. Guthrie has also made several acting appearances. He is the father of four children, who have also had careers as musicians.
City of New Orleans is a country folk song written by Steve Goodman (and first recorded for Goodman's self-titled 1971 album), describing a train ride from Chicago to New Orleans on the Illinois Central Railroad's City of New Orleans in bittersweet and nostalgic terms.

Goodman got the idea while traveling on the Illinois Central line for a visit to his wife's family. The song has been recorded by numerous artists both in the US and Europe, including two major hit versions: first by Arlo Guthrie in 1972, and later by Willie Nelson in 1984.
