  • Beethoven: Diabelli Variations, Op.120

    1:3:08

A performance that's so crazily, unreasonably beautiful that it's sort of ridiculous to listen to this if it's your first encounter with the Diabelli Variations -- it's too personal, too out-there in terms of the lengths to which it will go to give breath to Beethoven's conception, to serve as an introduction. But -- what the heck -- it's too good not to share. The interpretive insight here is transfixing, the pianism revelatory (if something here sounds strange, just think a little about exactly what the text instructs and you'll see how it suddenly makes sense). Unlike many other (admittedly excellent) recordings, there is no attempt made at smoothing out the huge dynamic contrasts Beethoven asks for (the pianossimos are real pianissimos); the sense of rhythm is tremendous, every inflection laser-etched, every variation utterly vivid, beflecked with colour.

As for the Diabelli Variations themselves -- well, they've got a good shot at being the greatest thing written for the piano, even if I think anything like a precise ranking is a conceptual nonsense. Think of the way Beethoven parodies (the faster variations are often very funny), tears apart, reconstructs, exaggerates, compresses, sanctifies, coaxes, and ultimately uplifts the theme he is provided with: a slight thing comprised of sequences repeated one after another, each time slightly modulated. Think of the passage in Var.3 where the treble suddenly holds a chord for four full bars while the bass repeats a little three-note figure eight times, after which the melody proceeds as if nothing out of the ordinary has happened, how Var.9 and 11 are built from the most microscopic element of the theme (the turn that begins the waltz), the minimalism of Var.13, the canonic exuberance of Var.19, the towering sphinxlike stillness of Var.20, the absurdly subtle Var.24 (which reflects on the theme with incredible ingenuity), the profoundly moving laments of Var.30-31, the gorgeous Var.32 -- a triple fugue whose first theme is built from Diabelli's falling fourth as well as its most uninspired element (a single note repeated ten times!) -- and the Op.111-arietta-like final variation, which like the closing pages of Beethoven's last sonata appears to stop time.

    00:00 -- Theme, Vivace
    00:53 -- Var.1, Alla Marcia maestoso
    02:46 -- Var.2, Poco allegro

This work is a large-scale set of variations for solo piano by German composer Ludwig van Beethoven (1770-1827). The main theme is based on a simple waltz composed by the Austrian music publisher and composer Anton Diabelli (1781-1858). The harmonic, rhythmic, textural and structural development that Beethoven applies to the waltz theme is simply astounding. In this 1985 live performance (St. Petersburg), the Russian pianist Grigory Sokolov does justice to Beethoven's work of genius.

Perhaps best known for writing the waltz on which Beethoven based his Diabelli Variations, Anton Diabelli was also an established composer and musician in his own right. Resident in Vienna in the late 18th and early 19th centuries, Diabelli was a good friend of Franz Schubert.

Thanks to the emergence of an educated middle class, there was less and less dependence on religious or royal patronage. Diabelli’s sonatas for guitar, widely considered to be masterpieces of the guitar repertoire, reflect Viennese musical taste at this time. They were his only foray into sonata form, and document the evolution of the composer’s style. The first sonata includes so-called ‘Italianisms’ while the second has a distinctly Schubertian flavour, no doubt due to his close friendship with the composer. The third sonata shows a more revolutionary take on the principles of sonata form where many of the ideas are challenged. The second part of the first movement contains such drama and skill in the development of the themes that it is considered one of the finest passages in the guitar sonata repertoire.

  • Various - Vaterländischer Künstlerverein, Part II: 50 Variations on a Waltz by Anton Diabelli

    1:26:16

The Vaterländischer Künstlerverein, loosely translated as “Patriotic Association of Arts”, is a titanic anthology containing a waltz by the composer and publisher Anton Diabelli, and variations of that waltz by 51 composers, totaling up to 83 variations.

The compendium consists of two parts. The first has 33 variations by Beethoven alone, while the second contains 50 variations by other composers in addition to Carl Czerny’s coda. The first part is widely considered among Beethoven’s finest compositions for piano, and has been heavily praised and frequently performed and recorded by pianists. The second part gained only crumbs of fame in its association with the first, and has largely been overlooked. Many of the miscellaneous composers featured in the already neglected second part might have been completely forgotten by our world, had it not been Diabelli who harvested their musical gifts.

    6:27

    Allegro moderato; Andantino; Rondo (Allegro)
    --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
The Austrian composer and music publisher Anton Diabelli (1781-1858) is remembered for two things. First, there was the waltz he sent around to various composers of the day in 1819, requesting them to write variations for an anthology. The challenge was, of course, best met by Beethoven, who wrote a whole set. Second, there are the eleven sonatinas (Opp. 151 and 168), which are still studied by many students to this day. I had never systematically studied them, although I probably learned one or two movements as a boy. However, I was given a copy of the Op. 168 set recently, and got much pleasure from playing through them - admiring the way Diabelli distilled the essence of a late classical sonata into miniature forms. The first movement reminds me of Haydn, the second movement is a little Schubertian, and the jolly rondo evokes for me a bouncing ball!

William Dunbar, Guitar (and production and everything else)

From Wikipedia: Anton (or Antonio) Diabelli (6 September 1781 – 7 April 1858) was an Austrian music publisher, editor and composer. Best known in his time as a publisher, he is most familiar today as the composer of the waltz on which Ludwig van Beethoven wrote his set of thirty-three Diabelli Variations. He also wrote a lot of easy parlor music for guitar, piano, and other instruments, which his publishing house put out for general use by amateurs. These pieces are not particularly interesting for the most part, but they're good study pieces, and there are some good moments. Enjoy!

This video was created as a contribution to a massive project: 12 sets of variations played by dozens of pianists from all over the world, each contributing a set of few variations. I was assigned these two from Diabelli, Goldberg Variations No. 27, and Mendelssohn Variations sérieuses 8-10. It helped me remember our love for the music and collaboration during the Covid-19 pandemic. Thank you so much Joe Patrych, our beloved recording engineer, for the idea, organization, and getting us to play!!

Please consider supporting me on my mission to promote music as a healing and unifying agent.

These recordings are intended for students to refer to from time to time and include a play-through at a reasonable performance tempo as well as a slow version where that would be beneficial.
These are not high quality recordings and are only intended to give a general idea of the piece in terms of correct notes, rhythm, and overall musical style and shape. Students will make pieces their own by adding their own personal character and panache.

The first movement of this sonata vaguely echoes Weber in its horn-like opening. The linked second and third movements use the same theme. I have to say that the rapid repeated chords in the accompaniment figures towards the end of the rondo really require a piano with a looser action than mine!
