    ODE AU SILENCE (Symphonie n°1)

    On a beaucoup glosé sur ce titre : en roumain, Odă tăcerii. Le mot tăcere, tout comme le terme russe молчание, est un substantif correspondant au verbe taire. En français, faute d’autre mot, point de dilemme possible : Ode au silence. La retraduction en roumain (Odă liniștii) puis de nouveau en français pourrait donner Ode à la quiétude, ce qui ici serait un contresens évident. Alors, ode au non-son ou ode à la non-parole ? Il n’est pas neutre de se rappeler que cette œuvre fut composée en plein régime totalitaire, mais ne retenir que le sens lié au verbe se taire, c’est humaniser un peu trop une œuvre aspirant davantage au minéral plutôt qu’à la « politique » en tant que partie du « culturel ».
    On peut décrire cette symphonie par analogie et opposition au Prométhée de Scriabine, dont elle est, au fond, le parfait antipode. Ce qui les rapproche ? Leur technique modale : Prométhée est construit entièrement sur un mode de 6 sons ; Ode au silence, sur un mode qui en comporte 61. Ce qui les rapproche encore ? Les deux œuvres revêtent un caractère inaugural. Le début de Prométhée annonce un enfantement ; l’exorde de l’Ode au silence annonce, elle, la fin du monde.
    Conçue en un seul mouvement, l’œuvre comporte trois sections. La première ouvre successivement les portes – innombrables et triomphales – de l’Apocalypse, qui paraît ici lointaine et tout ensemble immédiate.
    Les 61 sons forment d’emblée un bloc assourdissant. Ce bloc est ensuite « sculpté », devenant en partie son en creux. Voici donc posée la question du silence vu comme partie imaginaire, implicite, rêvée, d’un son réel.
    Ode au silence apporte un démenti évident à l’idée – hélas, répandue – que la musique post-tonale ne saurait engendrer le sentiment d’attente propre, par exemple, à la section qui dans la forme-sonate prépare, anticipe et annonce la ré-exposition (on appelle cette section en russe предыкт, en latin predictus, en anglais retransition). La seconde section de l’Ode au silence représente bel et bien l’attente d’une ré-exposition.
    Ce qui est pourtant le plus surprenant – car cela est surprenant a posteriori – c’est que dans l’ultime section, la ré-exposition survient tout en ne survenant pas : la reprise de la première section est scindée en une attente et un accomplissement de ce qui se révèle en définitive comme une attente aussi. La ré-exposition devient ainsi sa propre anticipation. Une menace à l’état pur : présage d’un présage, prophétie mise en abyme.
