  • PURCHASE OF MANHATTAN - Concert Opera

    4:51

The concert opera PURCHASE OF MANHATTAN sings-to-life the drama of New York's hidden beginning. Was the island's price tag really $24 worth of beads? A production of the Lenape Center in Manhattan, the opera's intuitive quality captivates Indian and non-Indian audiences alike with an intelligent and inspired look into the life of Manhattan's first inhabitants, the Lenape. PURCHASE OF MANHATTAN mingles together a perfect blend of operatic and American Indian singing styles about the famous beginnings of New Netherland, later becoming New Amsterdam and finally New York. By keenly re-staging New York's founding from a Lenape perspective, the opera blazes uncharted territory with shrewdness and eloquence.

PURCHASE OF MANHATTAN is exquisitely scored for three solo voices, chorus, American Indian singers, orchestra and Native American flute, by preeminent Mohican composer, Brent Michael Davids, in collaboration with celebrated Abenaki author, Joseph Bruchac, for the libretto. The music interlaces American Indian and Western European styles in a hybrid mix that is exuberant and dazzling; it's an amalgamated compositional style that classical music critic Bill Parker describes as never glib or facile, but rich in resonance. As a Mohican from a tribe once residing in lower Manhattan, Brooklyn and the Bronx, the composer's lyrical conjuring of early Lenape life is unique and bold. Similar to his creations for Chanticleer and Kronos Quartet, we straightaway grasp the opera's primal earthiness amid the sparkling orchestration, making our ears dance with delight.

PURCHASE OF MANHATTAN was commissioned by the Lenape Center in Manhattan with support from the Collegiate Church of New York and funded in part by the Smithsonian National Museum of the American Indian's Expressive Arts program, the Indian Arts Research Center of the School for Advanced Research with support from the Ronald and Susan Dubin Artist Fellowship, the Native Arts & Culture Foundation's Artist Fellowship, and ongoing support from Sharon Doty Davids. The promo audio was edited from a performance by the Society for New Music in Syracuse NY, featuring soloists Laura Ensin, Jonathan Howell, Steven Hull, and conductor Sara Jobin.

  • Sagvik: Chamber Opera on Pueblo Indian myths

    10:01

    - - - Four parts of the one hour opera Vandringen till Sköldpaddsberget / The ramble to the Turtle Mountain (libretto and story Ulla-Carin Nyquist ). North American Indian mythology and religion is very simple and handy: We are dying because it would be too crowded if all were still here; to look for something other than what you have will prove unnecessary, what we need is here. Despite this, people walk around, like blind, looking for something else. Eventually, man will still always come back to the middle, the middle way, in harmony with nature, with animals and with fellow humans. About this is this one-hour opera for six instrumentalists and a people consisting of seven singers, an old man, two middle-aged people, two young, a mole and Grandmother Spider, a mythical creature deity. In addition, two wars Brothers (dancers*) terrorizes the people. The opera was comissioned by Swedish FOLKOPERAN and was performed 80 times in front of 400 children - every time! I think they did a good job during this recording; you can hardly hear them ;-)

The plot is simple - the people awakens in their underworld and wonder if there is something else, somewhere. Grandma Spider shows them four different mountains at the horizont - beware of them all, BUT you SHOULD find the Golden Turtle Mountain you will then know that you are home. Of course the stupid people ramble to each one of the forbidden mountains, quarreling about what it was Grand Ma said, all the time shadowed by the blind mole who only can sense the different mountains and the dangers, and by the war twins, spirits related to Grandma Spider, all the time provoking with weapons, and at every mountain one of the family gets killed. Only the two youngest remain in the end, and after quarreling about the meaning with searching for ANOTHER mountain (why should they - mountains kill people...) they agree to stop searching - THAT is the breaking point where they finally find the Turtle Mountain that will show them how to crop their corn and fell free and happy with what they have; stop searching, because everything you need is right where you are, you just have to realize this simple fact. The moral, however, is NOT that you never should TRY to get things better, only you must not quarrel, not build weapons (because if you do you want to use them) and disagree about the simple things in life; if you do you run the risk of loosing, or missing, the REAL possibilities that could give you a richer inner life.

El Condor Pasa (If I Could)

I'd rather be a sparrow than a snail
    Yes, I would
    If I could
    I surely would

I'd rather be a hammer than a nail
    Yes, I would

Thunderbird Suite, Op. 63 / Before Sunrise (Cadman) / Dario Muller - piano; Vincenzo Minnino - percussion)

American composer Charles Wakefield Cadman (December 24, 1881 – December 30, 1946): Cadman’s musical education, unlike that of most of his American contemporaries, was completely American. Born in Johnstown, Pennsylvania, he began piano lessons at 13. Eventually, he went to nearby Pittsburgh where he studied harmony, theory, and orchestration with Luigi von Kunits and Emil Paur, then concertmaster and conductor, respectively, of the Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra. This was the sum of his training. He was named a national honorary member of Phi Mu Alpha Sinfonia music fraternity in 1915. In 1908 Cadman was appointed the music editor and critic of the Pittsburgh Dispatch.[1] He was greatly influenced by American Indian music and went to Nebraska to make cylinder recordings of tribal melodies for the Smithsonian Institution. He lived with the Omaha and Winnebago tribes on their reservations, learning to play their instruments. He used elements of traditional music in the form of his compositions of 19th-century romantic music. Publishing several articles on American Indian music, Cadman was regarded as one of the foremost experts on the subject. He toured both the States and Europe giving his then-celebrated Indian Talk. But his involvement with the so-called Indianist movement in American music contributed to some critics failing to judge his works on their own merits. Cadman's early works enjoyed little success until the famous soprano Lillian Nordica sang his From the Land of the Sky-Blue Water, an Indian-influenced song. Another Indian-influenced song which became well known in the 1920s was At Dawning.
Shanewis (or The Robin Woman), an opera in one act and two scenes, debuted at the Metropolitan Opera in New York City on March 23, 1918, the first American opera to have been presented at the Metropolitan Opera for more than a single season. Over a two-season span, it was staged eight times. The opera was later performed in Denver in 1924 and Los Angeles in 1926. At the Denver performance of 1924, the title role was performed by soprano Tsianina Redfeather Blackstone, who provided the semi-autobiographical story of the opera, in her operatic debut. Cadman eventually moved to Los Angeles. He helped to found and often performed as a soloist with the Hollywood Bowl Orchestra. He wrote the scores for several films, including The Sky Hawk, Captain of the Guard, Women Everywhere, and Harmony at Home. Along with Dmitri Tiomkin, he was considered one of Hollywood’s top film composers. But Cadman first and foremost was a serious composer who wrote for nearly every genre. His chamber music works are generally considered among his best. He introduced elements of ragtime music into the classical music format, anticipating Gershwin, Stravinsky, and Milhaud, among others. His Piano Trio, Op. 56, composed in 1913, drew the critics' attention and praise for his innovations. The Pageant of Colorado, a historical pageant with music composed by Cadman to a libretto by Lillian White Spencer, was produced in Denver, Colorado in May 1927 under the direction of dramatist and playwright Percy Jewett Burrell, a fraternity colleague of Cadman. His opera The Sunset Trail (1922) was part of the touring repertoire of Vladimir Rosing's American Opera Company. He also composed music for Da O Ma, an opera based on Omaha traditions, with a libretto written by Nelle Richmond Eberhart and Francis La Flesche, an Omaha ethnologist with the Smithsonian.[2]

Charles Wakefield Cadman, Francis La Flesche, and Nelle Richmond Eberhart began collaborating on this opera in 1908, at that time titled Daoma (sometimes spelled Da O Ma). In the 1930s, Cadman and Eberhart revised the opera and renamed it Ramala, often using the subtitle Land of the Misty Water. La Flesche, an anthropologist and member of the Omaha tribe, provided recordings and transcriptions of Omaha music and the story for Ramala. Cadman composed music based on those tunes, and Eberhart and La Flesche worked together to write the libretto.

If Elizabeth Warren is sincerely part Native, I encourage her to go learn about her communities and to support them fully. If she just throws that in as a bonus, ROAR!

In a nation that truly tried to eradicate (and then educate and assimilate) Native folk, we are the only people who have to prove our bloodlines to claim heritage. It's a little awkward, but it's sort of like we're such a small proportion of the population that I cannot think of a better system.

Elizabeth Warren's bloodline is not the reason I made this video though. She's just the hot news flash of the month.

    Thanks for watching!

I did not take the pictures and will gladly remove them at the request of the folks who did take them. Although, the use of them as part of my social commentary would be much appreciated.

For centuries, the greatest sailors in the world masterfully navigated the vast Pacific, discovering the many islands of Oceania. But then, 3,000 years ago, their voyages stopped for a millennium – and no one knows exactly why. From Walt Disney Animation Studios comes “Moana,” a sweeping, CG-animated feature film about an adventurous teenager who is inspired to leave the safety and security of her island on a daring journey to save her people. Inexplicably drawn to the ocean, Moana (voice of Auliʻi Cravalho) convinces the mighty demigod Maui (voice of Dwayne Johnson) to join her mission, and he reluctantly helps her become a wayfinder like her ancestors who sailed before her. Together, they voyage across the open ocean on an action-packed adventure, encountering enormous monsters and impossible odds, and along the way, Moana fulfills her quest and discovers the one thing she’s always sought: her own identity. Directed by the renowned filmmaking team of Ron Clements and John Musker (“The Little Mermaid,” “Aladdin,” “The Princess & the Frog”), produced by Osnat Shurer (“Lifted,” “One Man Band”), and featuring music by Lin-Manuel Miranda, Mark Mancina and Opetaia Foa‘i, “Moana” sailed into U.S. theaters on Nov. 23, 2016.

    Mother, sing me a song
    That will ease my pain,
    Mend broken bones,
    Bring wholeness again.

    Catch my babies
    When they are born,
    Sing my death song,
    Teach me how to mourn.

    Mother, heal my heart
    So that I can see
    The gifts of yours
    That can live through me.
