Althea Talbot-Howard, Oboe, plays Rob Keeley: Solar Panels

    7:31

Premiere recording of Rob Keeley (b.1960): Solar Panels (2011).

The world premiere performance was given by Althea Talbot-Howard and Dominic Saunders on 20 November 2013 at The British Music Project Concert at King's College, London. This recording was made at West Road Concert Hall, Cambridge on 14 April 2014.

Solar Panels is not a programmatic paean to renewable energy, as might be expected, but a through-composed piece structured into a series of panels -- a compositional technique utilized by Franco Donatoni. Keeley studied with Donatoni in 1988, and this work recreates the Florentine piazzas, bells, strong sunlight and cool shade which made such an impression on the composer during his year in Italy. Originally written for the ensemble New Noise and scored for oboe and vibraphone, Keeley felt that there was an acoustic mismatch between the timbres of the two instruments, and so, in 2011, recast the work for oboe and piano.

Rob Keeley is Senior Lecturer in Composition at King's College, London. After studying with Oliver Knussen at the Royal College of Music, his subsequent teachers included Bernard Rose and Franco Donatoni. Keeley has had works performed by the BBCSO and BBCNOW, as well as by contemporary music groups such as Lontano, the Premiere Ensemble and Ensemble Bash. A former student oboist - having studied the instrument for several years at the RCM Junior Department - Keeley has written a great deal for the oboe and other woodwind instruments. Keeley lists Purcell, Britten, Debussy, Birtwistle, Stravinsky, Donatoni as composers all of whom have been influential in the formation of his own musical language.

Althea Talbot-Howard plays Stephen Dodgson: Cor Anglais Sonata

    14:01

World premiere recording of the Sonata for Cor Anglais & Piano (1967) by the late Stephen Dodgson (1924-2013), performed by Althea Talbot-Howard and Dominic Saunders.

The rarely-performed Sonata for Cor Anglais and Piano was written in 1967. It received only one performance, remaining unperformed until Althea and Dominic gave the second performance in April 2013, a few days after Stephen Dodgson passed away.

The only chamber work composed expressly for the cor anglais by Dodgson, its movements are structured in the traditional slow-fast-slow-fast format established in the eighteenth century. The Sonata is a wonderful example of Dodgson's skill in composing for woodwind instruments in that it combines an excellent use of tessitura with the desire to exploit the entire range of the cor anglais.

The late Stephen Dodgson first became interested in composition during his teenage years. In 1947, after being discharged from the Royal Navy, he entered the Royal College of Music where he studied French Horn and Composition. His teachers in the latter subject included R.O. Morris and Patrick Hadley. Dodgson, a highly-skilled composer and craftsman, gained international renown for his guitar music. His harpsichord music also gained a considerable following, but his large oeuvre of woodwind music is less well known. In addition to fulfilling numerous commissions, Dodgson taught composition at the RCM from 1957-1982 and was regularly employed by the BBC to write incidental music for radio plays. He wrote widely in most musical genres, but had a particular interest in chamber music.

For more works by Stephen Dodgson, contact Phylloscopus Publications and Cadenza Music.

Althea Talbot-Howard: Reicha ~ Scene for Cor Anglais and Piano

    6:29

This video: with Dominic Saunders, piano. Composed by Reicha-Holliger-Meier.

Anton Reicha (1770 -1836): Scene (1811) for Cor Anglais (English Horn) and Piano. Dress rehearsal for the recital Paris 1811 - 2006 at West Road Concert Hall, Cambridge, UK, 22nd May 2009. Manuscript discovered in Bibliotecheque Nationale de Paris by Heinz Holliger. One page of manuscript (about 30 bars) was missing, so Holliger completed it. This is the section at the end of the recitative going into the rondo. Originally composed for cor anglais with orchestra, the piano score was put together by Kurt Meier.

Sheet music available at June Emerson Wind Music, UK. There is also an easier version of the piece available at June Emerson's called Anton Reicha - Recitative and Rondo, edited by McGinnis & Marx.

Althea Talbot-Howard, Oboe damore, plays Fothringham: Forms in Movement

    14:20

Lionel Steuart Fothringham's Forms in Movement (2013) for Oboe d'amore and Piano was written for Althea Talbot-Howard and Dominic Saunders. The world premiere was given at the British Music Project concert at King's College, London on 20 November 2013. This recording was made at West Road Concert Hall, Cambridge, on 14 April 2014.

Describing the work, Lionel Steuart Fothringham, writes that it is inspired by a set of eponymous sculptures by Barbara Hepworth (1903-75) which were in turn inspired by the Pavan and Galliard for the Earl of Salisbury by William Byrd (1539-1623). The sculptures consist of a continuous ribbon of copper formed into three irregular circles emanating from a common base point. In my work, I have attempted to combine quotations from Byrd's keyboard originals with the structural forms implicit in the sculptures; the idea of returning to the same point via different routes is explored in each of the three principal movements according to the character of the original music. Sometimes the route taken can be close to Byrd's (as in the Galliard) and in other cases that character can be quite transformed (as in part of the Pavan). The Prelude serves to allow the listener to reconcile the conflicting sound worlds of the sixteenth and twenty-first centuries.

Lionel Steuart Fothringham is currently Head of Music at the High School of Dundee, and at the finishing point of a PhD in Composition at King's College, London. Hitherto his career has focused primarily on the organ -- he was Organ Scholar at St. Paul's and Westminster Cathedrals shortly after graduating from St. Catharine's College, Cambridge -- and teaching; he has occupied the position of Director of Music at Highgate School, North London, prior to taking up the same position at the High School of Dundee. In 2004, Priory Records released The Organs of Eton College, and Fothringham's Scherzo for Organ was featured on the disc and well-reviewed by International Record Review. Since commencing his PhD studies, Fothringham has written a number of works featuring the oboe.
