  • Alex Chilton - Live 1985-1999

    1:45:25

There are several interesting live albums of Alex Chilton on the market, documenting one-off gigs in Europe with pick up bands ('Live in London', 'Live in Anvers'), his brief period in the late-70s New York No Wave scene ('Ocean Club '77'), an improvised acoustic gig played when the power went out at New York's Knitting Factory club during a late-90s gig ('Electricity by Candlelight'), various Big Star sets documenting versions of that band in the 1970s and 1990s...but there's never been a live album released of Alex Chilton playing with his regular trio during the period when he toured extensively as a solo artist (late 1984 to around 2000). These recordings vary in quality, and are from a variety of sources.

The TUESDAY SERIES CONTINUES with more AC from the archives by popular demand: Here's Alex Chilton (guitar and vocals), Lloyd Fonoroff (drums), and myself (Chris Stamey, bass) rehearsing a song from The Singer, Not the Song EP (Ork), which was Alex's then current record. Prior to the first gig at CBGB. From cassette. Pictures by Ebet Roberts, some taken at this very rehearsal I believe, some at CBGB. He had hurt his hand during the sessions for the EP and I don't think he played guitar on the release perhaps? So it's fun to hear him tackle it himself.

    6:23

...so I was at the Guilford, CT Fair with my 3-year old daughter on a Friday night in September of 2003, and we stopped by the band tent because the music was sounding pretty good. At first glance, I thought it was a local CT band of some sort, but during one of the breaks the lead singer introduced them as The Box Tops and it suddenly dawned on me that the reason the lead singer looked (and sounded) so familiar was because he was ALEX CHILTON! I wish I had taped the whole set, but I had more pressing responsibilities...it was still one of the more surreal moments of my life. Check out the way Alex handled the Big Star request at the 5:25 timepoint.

  • ALEX CHILTON - All We Ever Got From Them Was Pain

    3:17

ALEX CHILTON - All We Ever Got From Them Was Pain - 1st side of 45 rpm single released 2012 - In the latter months of 1969, somewhere between the moon landing and the start of the Vietnam draft, the concerts at Woodstock and Altamont, Alex Chilton decided to take back his life. During that annus mirabilis, while the world experienced a generationally sparked social, political, and cultural upheaval, the 18-year-old Chilton was in the midst of a revolution of his own. For the past year, Chilton had been strapped in a creative, professional, and personal straitjacket. He was the lead singer of a million-selling band, The Box Tops, but felt like little more than a puppet of the group's producers. In the era of free love, he'd been pressured into a shotgun marriage and fatherhood. And he'd ultimately come to see himself as the pawn of an unscrupulous business machine, sent to grind it out on the road in a series of silly lip-synched TV performances and one-night stands while someone else cashed his checks. As he entered the studio that summer to make his first solo recordings, the man who would come to define the very spirit of musical independence was still bound in chains. At a time where liberation and self-expression were rallying cries, Alex Chilton was about to break free.

    3:40

Alex Chilton - High Priest (1987)

William Alexander Alex Chilton (December 28, 1950 -- March 17, 2010) was an American songwriter, guitarist, singer and producer, best known as the lead singer of the Box Tops and Big Star. Chilton's early commercial success in the 1960s as a teen vocalist for the Box Tops was not repeated in later years with Big Star and in his indie music solo career on small labels, but he drew a loyal following in the indie and alternative music fields and is often cited as an influence by many mainstream rock artists and bands.

  • Alex Chilton : My Rival 2 track demo mid 1970s

    2:21

THIS is from a cassette tape given to me by a friend decades ago in Rochester, apparently the source is a sometime band mate Doug Easley or someone. I have never heard or seen it anywhere on the internet before. Its Alex singing along to a Strat-ish sound guitar and then double tracked. The bridge is so great as is Alex's surfy vocals. The image is probably not Alex (but who really knows)... I like to pair his music with the photographs of fellow Memphis friend and Photographer William Eggleston - also a giant figure if you like beautiful and unfiltered Americana 1977 /78
