One of my all time favourite artists. The lyrics, the vocals everything just works with Al Jarreau. I wish todays music would have a hint of songs like this.
Al is still in the game and I know you all will agree. Enjoy!

  • Al Jarreau - Spain

    6:34

Al Jarreau's classic version of Chick Corea's already classic Spain.
Corea wrote it as an instrumental with an intro based on the second movement of Joaquín Rodrigo's guitar concerto Concierto de Aranjuez. Jarreau put lyrics to the whole tune.
Jarreau released it on the album This Time in 1980, and it's on virtually every one of his compilations.
Opinions vary on who plays on what song on the album ( but Abraham Laboriel is listed as its sole bass player, and that's obviously Steve Gadd on the drums. And probably Larry Williams on keyboard.

Someone asked for possible tabs. Here's a few:

    And here are the lyrics:

    Yesterday
    Just a photograph of yesterday
    And all its edges folded
And the corners faded sepia brown
And yet it's all I have of our past love
A post script to its ending

    Brighter days
I can see such brighter days
When every song we sang is sung again
    And now we know
We know this time it's for good
    And we're lovers once again
    And you're near me

I can remember the rain in december
The leaves of brown on the ground
In Spain I did love and adore you
The nights filled with joy were our yesterdays
And tomorrow will bring you near me

    I can recall my desire
    Every reverie is on fire
And I get a picture of all our yesterdays
    Yes, today I can say
I get a kick every time they play that Spain again

I can remember the rain in december
The leaves of brown on the ground
Our love was a Spanish fiesta
The bright lights and sounds were our joy each day
And the nights were the heat of yearning

    I can recall my desire
    Every reverie is on fire
And I get a picture of all our yesterdays
    Yes, today I can say
I get a kick every time I see you gaze at me

    I see moments of history
Your eyes meet mine and they dance to the melody
And we live again as if dreaming
The sound of our hearts beat like castanets
And forever we'll know their meaning

I can recall my desire every reverie is on fire
And I get a picture of all our yesterdays
    Yes, today I can say
I get a kick every time I see you gaze at me

    [music solo]

    You gaze at me
    I see moments of history
    Your eyes meet mine
And they dance to the melody
And we live again as if dreaming

The sound of our hearts beat like castenets
And forever we'll know their meaning

    I can recall my desire
    Every reverie is on fire
And I get a picture of all our yesterdays
    Yes, today I can say
I get a kick every time I see you gaze at me

    [scat solo]

    You gaze at me
    I see moments of history
Your eyes meet mine and they dance to the melody
And we live again as if dreaming
The sound of our hearts beat like castanets
And forever we'll know their meaning

I can remember the rain in december
The leaves of brown tumbling down
In Spain I did love and adore you
The nights filled with joy were our yesterdays
And tomorrow will bring you near me

    I can recall my desire
    Every reverie is on fire
And I get a picture of all our yesterdays
    Yes, today I can say
I get a kick every time you sing that Spain

  • Al Jarreau ~ Never Givin Up

    4:01

    review by Jason Elias

Al Jarreau finally found success in the U.S. after 1975's We Got By. The later albums that followed ,like 1977's live Look to the Rainbow and 1978's All Fly Home found him attaining the all-important cult status and accolades from the jazz community. Those facts made his switch to pop/R&B on This Time even more surprising. For This Time, Jarreau is paired with producer Jay Graydon. Despite his jazz credentials, This Time does prove that this style is where Jarreau truly prospers. The jittery Never Give It Up and the melodic and pensive Gimme What You Got have a crisp and refined L.A. sound, and Jarreau gives the songs weight with his methodical yet playful vocals. In the same vein, the poignantly sung and arranged Your Sweet Love displays Jarreau's gift of ringing emotion where you'd least expect it. Jarreau also adds deft lyrics to jazz standards (A Rhyme) This Time and (I Can Recall) Spain. The best song to bridge the gap between the two incarnations, Alonzo, is strikingly beautiful and has Jarreau nearly reaching operatic heights. During its release, This Time was stunning for its fresh sound and a sense of warmth. Upon repeated plays, those attributes still ring true.

Moonlighting is the theme song to the ABC comedy-crime drama which ran from 1985 to 1989 and starred Bruce Willis and Cybill Shepherd. The theme song's music was written by Lee Holdridge, produced by Nile Rodgers and performed by Al Jarreau, who wrote the lyrics. Included in the soundtrack album for the series and released as a single in 1987, the song reached number twenty-three on the Billboard Hot 100 and spent one week at number one on the Adult Contemporary chart. In 1988 the song earned two Grammy Award nominations for Best Pop Vocal Performance, Male and for Best Song Written Specifically for a Motion Picture or Television.

    ***

When I first saw Moonlighting on Australian TV so many years ago I was tickled pink. Absolutely loved the show. This VERY RARE Moonlighting music video was captured by a friend of mine from an Australian TV broadcast. Quality wasn't too bad considering it came from low res video tape. The only other copy I know of is of atrocious quality so this was a breath of fresh air to view. The Rage TV show has some very good clips in their vaults to be sure and most of the time those clips trump what is available to the general public.

Not much was done with this. It has been scaled properly to 1080p with only a light cleanse. Doing more would destroy the already fragile details. A few small tweaks have been applied to enhance the image detail. My friend had already replaced the audio himself and there was no need for me to touch it as it was top notch.

Happy viewing and I hope you enjoy this blast from the past!

SPECIAL APPEAL: If anyone would like to donate a 2 Terabyte hard disk drive or drives as a way of saying thank you for the work I do and to help me keep my library safe from future loss please get in touch.

I hope you all enjoy this video upscale. Please share the link with your friends and I hope it doesn't end up being blocked in your country.

October 24, 2006 Givin' It Up Album

    ***no copyright infringement intended***

Though it has taken three decades, the pairing of George Benson and Al Jarreau - peerless music legends who both sprang from jazz into the international R&B and pop mainstream - was pure destiny.
The parallels of their career paths, musical ideologies and fans bases would seem to have deemed it so many moons ago. Both have earned multiple Gold and Platinum albums, totaling millions of copies sold, along with coveted Grammy awards in both the pop and jazz categories. And both gentlemen are consummate and engaging entertainers, each capable of selling out an all-nighter by himself and still barely denting his catalog of timeless classics.
The result is a landmark, 13-song album. Painstakingly prepared by Benson and Jarreau, Givin' It Up touches on every style and mood fans could imagine from this stellar event of musical matchmaking.
Givin' It Up crackles with inventive covers of standards ranging from the 1940s (Billie Holiday's God Bless the Child); the 1960s (Sam Cooke's Bring it on Home to Me featuring a surprise cameo by pop legend Paul McCartney); the 1970s (Seals & Crofts' Summer Breeze); and the 1980s (Daryl Hall's Everytime You Go Away). They also show respect for the music of today, inviting neo soul diva Jill Scott to sing along on God Bless the Child, and turning in a sumptuous instrumental rendition of singer/songwriter John Legend's Ordinary People with Marion Meadows on soprano sax.
Givin' It Up also features sizzling jazz jams on two Miles Davis classics: the classy swing of Four, with lyrics by the great Jon Hendricks and featuring Stanley Clarke on upright bass; and the lowdown blues of Tutu, rewritten as Resurrection Blues by Jarreau and set to Marcus Miller's dynamic original music (a homage to Bishop Desmond Tutu), featuring Miller himself on electric bass and special guest Herbie Hancock in scorching form on acoustic piano.
Proving yet again why he's one of the most talented and popular R&B vocalists working today, Jarreau pens lyrics and sings on one of Benson's biggest hits, Breezin', and offers a poignant reconciliation song titled Let it Rain, which also features the evocative muted trumpet of Chris Botti.
The album is a masterful collection of smooth, seductive grooves and inspired reinterpretations of Benson's and Jarreau's most classic songs.
The lively interplay between Benson's singular guitar work and Jarreau's unmistakable vocals give this jazz collaboration a truly one-of-kind sound and delivers harmonic depth and tonal richness which will garner appreciation from pop and jazz aficionados alike.
Whether you're a long-time fan of Benson and Jarreau or experiencing their musical genius for the first time, this album is a treat for music fans everywhere.

  • George Benson & Al Jarreau - Summer Breeze

    5:06

Givin' It Up finds crossover Jazz icons guitarist George Benson and vocalist Al Jarreau teaming up for a breezy, enjoyably melodic session that highlights both artists' long careers. Technically a duo album, it is Benson's first since signing with Concord Records.

As such, it works as a nice reintroduction to both artists and even finds them reworking the Bobby Womack classic Breezin', which Benson originally covered on his 1976 album of the same name. Here listeners get Jarreau adding lyrics and vocals on a version that really evokes the classic '70s Jazz-meets-R&B sound that was an original hallmark of Smooth Jazz.

In that sense, Givin' It Up is a true joy for fans of that more organic, song-oriented approach to crossover music, with Benson and Jarreau digging in to such great songs as Seals & Crofts' Summer Breeze, John Legend's Ordinary People, and Darryl Hall's Every Time You Go Away.

Also adding some unexpected fun and celebrity sheen to the proceedings is an impromptu appearance by Paul McCartney, who joins in on Sam Cooke's gospel-inflected Bring It on Home to Me.

Throw in appearances by trumpeter Chris Botti, vocalist Patti Austin, pianist Herbie Hancock, and bassist Marcus Miller and Stanley Clarke, and Givin' It Up proves music is always fun with a little help from your friends.

Al Jarreau and George Duke were friends long before they became household names. They began playing together in the mid-1960's in San Francisco as Al Jarreau and the George Duke Trio. The successes of these performances are what helped to launch both their careers. George's tragic passing in August, 2013, inspired Al to record this loving tribute to his longtime friend. With the exception of the fitting title track composed by Jarreau, all the tunes were written by George. Guest artists/collaborators include Gerald Albright, Stanley Clarke, Dr. John, Lalah Hathaway, Boney James, Marcus Miller, Jeffrey Osborne, Kelly Price, Dianne Reeves and Patrice Rushen. There's even a song with George Duke playing on it!

    Versão - João de Barro

    Sorri
    Quando a dor te torturar
    E a saudade atormentar
    Os teus dias tristonhos, vazios
    Sorri
    Quando tudo terminar
    Quando nada mais restar
    Do teu sonho encantador
    Sorri
Quando o sol perder a luz
    E sentires uma cruz
    Nos teus ombros cansados, doridos
    Sorri
    Vai mentindo a tua dor
E ao notar que tu sorris
    Todo mundo irá supor
    Que és feliz
