    Lyrics (from darklyrics.com):

    Aurora swims in the ether
Emerald fire scars the night sky
    Amber streams from Sol
Are not unlike the waves of the sea
Nor the endless horizon of ice
    Aurora swims in the ether
    Emerald fire paints the twilight
    Heidrun bleeds the golden nectar
For the raising sun and the moon
The midnight wolves who watch over the dawn
    Solstafir!!!

    14:45

    Atmospheric Folk/Dark Metal - USA - album: The Mantle - 2002
    -
    - members:
John Haughm - Vocals, Guitar (Drums 1996-2004)
Don Anderson - Guitar, Piano, Backing Vocals
    Jason William Walton - Bass
    Shane Breyer - Keyboards
    - themes: Nature, Loss, Depression, Death, Winter
    lyrics:
    Through vast valleys I wander
    To the highest peaks
On pathways through a wild forgotten landscape
In search of God, in spite of man
    'til the lost forsaken endless
This is where I choose to tread

Fall. . .so shall we fall into the nihil?
The nothingness that we feel in the arms of the pale
In the shadow of the grim companion who walks with us

    Here is the landscape
    Here is the sun
Here in the balance of the earth
    Where is the god?
Has he fallen and abandoned us?

As I'm stalked by the shadow of death's hand
The fire in my heart is forged across the land

Here at the edge of this world
Here I gaze at a pantheon of oak, a citadel of stone
If this grand panorama before me is what you call God
    Then God is not dead

I walked down to a river and sat in reflection of what had to be done
An offering of crimson flowed into the water below
A wound of spirit from which it floated and faded away

like every hope I've ever had
like every dream I've ever known
It washed away in a tide of longing, a longing for a better world
From my will, my throat, to the river, and into the sea
    wash away
    fade away

    Here is the landscape
    Here is the sun
Here at the edge of the earth
    Where is the god?
    Has he fallen to ruin?

As I'm stalked by the shadow of death's hand
My heathen pride is scarred across the land

  • Agalloch - Falling Snow

    9:38

    Song: Falling Snow
    Artist: Agalloch
    Album: Ashes Against The Grain
Genre: Post-metal, progressive metal, doom metal, black metal
    Year: 2006
Label: The End Records (TE068) (North America), Grau/Prophecy (Europe)
    Country: United States

    Lyrics (from darklyrics.com):

The water pours its embracing arms around the stone
Decay drips from the unquiet void where the ice forms, where life ends
The stone is by the crimson flood, swallowed
The red tide beyond the ebon wound, contorted
My sacrifice bids farewell in this river of memory... a wave to end all time
Red birds escape from my wounds and return as falling snow
To sweep the landscape; a wind haunted, wings without bodies
    The snow, the bitter snowfall
You wish to die in her pale arms, crystalline, to become an ode to silence
In the soul of a mountain of birds, fallen
The cascading pallor of ghostless feather
The snow has fallen and raised this white mountain on which you will die and fade away in silence

Label: The End Records (TE068) (North America), Grau/Prophecy (Europe)
    Country: United States

    Lyrics (from darklyrics.com):

The texture of the soul is a liquid that casts a vermilion flood
From a wound carved as an oath; it fills the river bank a sanguine fog
These arms were meant to be lost! Hacked, severed and forgotten
The texture of time is a whisper that echoes across the flood
It's hymn resonates from tree to tree, through every sullen bough it sings
These boughs were said to be lost! Torn, unearthed and broken
Earth to flesh, flesh to wood, cast these limbs into the water
Flesh to wood, wood to stone, cast this stone into the water...

  • Agalloch - You Were But A Ghost In My Arms

    9:18

You Were But A Ghost In My Arms by Agalloch from the album The Mantle.

    Lyrics:

Like snowfall, you cry a silent storm
Your tears paint rivers on this oaken wall. . .
    Amber nectar, misery ichor
. . .cascading in streams of hallowed form
For each stain, a forsaken shadow
    You are the lugubrious spirit
Etched in the oak of wonder
You are the sullen voice and silent storm
    Each night I lay
Awakened by her shivering silent voice
From the shapes in the corridor walls.
It pierces the solitude like that of a distant scream
In the pitch-black forest of my delusion. . .
With each passing day, a deeper grave. . .
Why did you leave me to die?
    Why did you abandon me?
Why did you walk away and leave me bitterly yearning?
Her haunting, contorted despair was etched into the wood's grain
Though fire rages within me, no fire burns fiercer than her desire
The shape whispers my name. . .
    I damn this oak!
    I damn her sorrow!
    I damn these oaken corridors
That bear the ghosts of those I've thrown away!
Though tempted I am to caress her texture divine
    And taste her pain sweet, sweet like brandy wine;
I must burn these halls, these corridors
And silence her shrill, tormenting voice
    . . .forever. . .
Like snowfall, you cried a silent storm
No tears stain this dust in my hands
But from this ashen gray, her voice still
    Whispers my name. . .
    You were the lugubrious spirit
Who haunted the oak of wonder
You were the geist that warned this frozen silent storm
You were but a ghost in my arms

  • Agalloch- Marrow of the Spirit ALBUM REVIEW

    5:36

    Listen:

NPR Stream (good 'til Nov 23rd):

Two more perspectives on this album:

Agalloch's fourth studio album is an interesting followup to 2006's Ashes Against the Grain. Marrow of the Spirit is nowhere near as distorted or heavy, but the band manages to overcome that with a lot more melody, dynamics, and acoustic instrumentation.

There are still some really brooding moments, and the long song lengths only enhance the dark mood the music shoots for. John Haughm really works to change up his vocal style on some pivotal points of the album, and the entire experience is really cohesive and cinematic.

This is another triumph for the band's discography, but it really shouldn't be a surprise considering how consistent they've been thus far.

What did you think of this LP? Love it? Hate it? Why? What should I review next?

    8/10 /

Eisenwald presents The Grey EP: A collection of destroyed & rebuilt songs from “The Mantle”.

The Grey is the first installment of two companion releases, originally released in 2004.
This new edition includes an exclusive bonus track recorded in 2003, that has never been released on any format.

The ‘Grey’ allowed the band to expand into the more experimental, ambient territory by reworking two lengthy pieces from the band’s legendary second album ‘The Mantle’, reimagining the songs into something altogether more droning, hypnotic and unsettling.

For over twenty years the Pacific Northwest group Agalloch had defined what it means to combine influences from a variety of musical genres into one brooding, colossal, and cinematic sound that provides the soundtrack to existential themes concerning man, nature, loss, and death.

Eisenwald presents The White EP: a collection of dark folk & ambient work written & recorded between 2004 - 2007.

Originally released in 2008 by now-defunct Vendlus Records, the White is the last installment of two companion releases & the stylistic counterpart to the Grey. This remastered re-issue includes the rare track “Where Shade Once Was”.

The ‘White’ showcases Agalloch at their most pastoral – gentle acoustic guitars, piano, and field samples combine to create an absorbing, affecting neofolk soundtrack to obscure midsummer rituals in the depths of the wilderness.

  • Agalloch - Odal

    7:40

    From The Mantle 2002

Despite their style being firmly grounded in the dark metal genre, Agalloch has always been a band who prefers experimentation over settling on a niche. The result has been three full-lengths and a handful of EPs that have bridged the gap between gothic doom, black metal, neo-folk, post rock, and industrial/ambient soundscapes. The band has earned a rabid cult following over the years due in part to their artistic & independent attitude, elusive aura, and scarce but volatile live performances.

  • Agalloch - In The Shadow Of Our Pale Companion Cover

    14:41

Covering all the guitars on my favourite Agalloch song: In The Shadow Of Our Pale Companion. With so many guitars, I would've loved to find some tabs, but they were all crap. I had to learn it all by ear and boy let me tell you, that was a long ride... Fortunately enough, the song is not difficult at all to play.
It was very hard to edit the video with my shitty iMovie. The bottom right image seems to be a bit... glitchy, but the audio is good. You may also hear that I recorded some of the guitars just with the audio in some harmonized parts. I couldn't fit the image in the editing.
    Hope you enjoy.

I do not own the copyrights of this song or Agalloch.

    2:33

A cover of the opening track from the Progressive Metal masterpiece 'The Mantle' by the now disbanded legends of USBM, Agalloch.

This album is easily one of the most incredible albums released since the early 2000's and it has certainly stood the test of time.

I decided to finally get around to covering some Agalloch as a result of their recent split in June. It is such a shame that I never had a chance to see these guys live before they split. Over the past year or so they have become one of my favorite bands. A late discovery, but definitely not the least influential on my songwriting and musical inspiration.

I am looking forward to doing more Agalloch covers in the near future and I am also currently working on finishing my EP which is heavily influenced by early Agalloch, Ulver and Katatonia.

    Thanks for watching!

  • Agalloch - Interview @ Scion Rock Fest 2011

    5:01

Agalloch is interviewed at Scion Rock Fest 2011.

For fourteen years, the Pacific Northwest group, Agalloch, has carved out a multifarious sound consisting of black metal, folk, progressive rock, and ambient soundscapes that has marked them as a pioneer in the contemporary dark music scene. In between each of these full-lengths the band pushed on the flexible boundaries they had developed around themselves through a series of limited releases that found the band experimenting with post-rock/experimental rock, and neo-folk/psychedelic folk.
