  • USIKU LAINI, from the CD, STAREHE: An African Day, with Claire Johnston and Jeff Maluleke.

    5:37

STAREHE: An African Day is a Limited Edition CD featuring Claire Johnston and Jeff Maluleke

    Claire Johnston of Mango Groove
While Claire is perhaps in one sense best known to music fans as the voice and face of Mango Groove, in parallel with her Mango Groove career she has pursued a variety of successful solo projects that have made her much loved in her own right, and that have reinforced her status as a South African entertainment icon.

Claire's first solo album, released through Sting Music, and recorded at Real World Studios in Bath and Sarm West and Olympic studios in London, UK. The Fearless album was produced by UK uber-producer Vic Coppersmith-Heaven, with additional tracks being produced by globally acclaimed songwriter/producer Marius de Vries (Madonna, Bjork and the 'Moulin Rouge' and 'Romeo and Juliet' soundtracks).

'Fearless' was self-consciously a creative departure for Claire from the Mango sound. The World Music influences are certainly present (some of Peter Gabriel's musicians played on the tracks), but overall the tracks have a more haunting and minor key texture than the Mango Groove songs. The result is a stunningly evocative and introspective album.

Conservation has become an issue that is very close to Claire's heart, and it has found its perfect expression in the 2006 release of the limited edition CD 'Starehe: An African Day'. The album took 3 years to make, and has been made in partnership with Amarula Cream. It will serve as a fund raising and awareness vehicle for Rob Slotow's Elephant research Project as well as the Wilderness Foundation. The album has a strong 'World' feel, and again features the iconic Jeff Maluleke as a guest artist and writer. The CD is available only from

In addition to the 'Starehe' project, Claire has performed at fundraisers for the Wilderness Foundation, and was a special guest at the World Wilderness Conference in South Africa in 2003. She was also part of the global broadcast of Shamwari's release of lions into the Eastern Cape (the first time in 150 years), and at this event was given the huge honour of being made the first SA patron of the world wide Born Free Foundation.

    Jeff Maluleke.
IN September of 1995, Jeff Maluleke, then signed to CCP Records as Papa Jeff, approached the record company with a rough four-track demo containing what was to become the starting point for HAGONYA. Gone was the township pop of Papa Jeff which had already earned him a gold record and in its place was a new sound that Jeff saw as the future direction of his music.

Jeff's passion for music started when he was at school in Bush-Buckridge and has found its expression in impromptu performance of his favourite cover versions, for diners in the school-dining hall. It was also at this stage that he met Pat Dubazane, a student of the guitar, and like Jeff, a passionate musician.

Having completed his studies Jeff moved to Johannesburg where he attended an engineering course at Primitive Studios. During the course he met Dr. Victor who hired him as a backing vocalist for the Rasta Rebels. Jeff was then invited to write a track with Dr. Victor and together they came up with I Miss Your Love which was released on the album One Goal, One Wish

The next phase in Jeff's career arose from a chance of meeting Tronix, an old school friend, at a concert in Daveyton. Tronix invited Jeff to 999 Studios for a jamming session where he met Arthur Mafokate. So impressed with Jeff's vocals was Arthur that he immediately set about recording a project entitled Papa Jeff The album was delivered to CCP and went on to sell in excess of 30 000 units, a gold disc achieving debut for Jeff and an artist contract with CCP Records.

Shortly afterwards Jeff and his song writing partner, Pat Dubazane, began harassing the A&R staff at CCP to listen to the material that they had been working on an over the last few years.

The record company saw potential in the material and within a week of having it presented to them Jeff and Pat were hard at work at RHYTHM NATION studios on their debut album. The quality of music attracted some of SA's finest musicians to do session work, among Andy Innes of Juluka and Bizo of Bayete.

    Instrumentation:
    vocals
    Genre: mbaqanga

About the debut album That's The Way Jeff had the following to say: Underneath the sadness in this album lies a message of hope. Say Jeff; If you cannot find it in the lyrics then you will feel it in the music. I have tried to present African music in a form that will make it accessible to all and hopefully bring people to realise that it is not only for Africans, but for the world to enjoy.

  • African Day Suite by Hawk

    16:29

Hawk (a.k.a. 'Jo'burg Hawk') was a ground-breaking progressive rock band active in South Africa in the early 1970s. They effortlessly melded rock with African culture. This epic track in eight parts is from their 1972 album, Africa She Too Can Cry.

Description from the South African Rock Encyclopedia:
The 'African Day Suite' is a re-recorded and extended version of the side-long epic which originally appeared on 'African Day'. It tells the story, in spoken words, lyrics and music, of a rampaging elephant that threatens to destroy a tribal village and has to be killed. The fact that the censors missed the analogy to the oppressive apartheid regime at the time is amazing.

  • Hawk - African day

    17:07

One of the leading South African bands of the 1970s, with their own blend of Afro-rock. Their first album, African Day, was released in 1971, with the musicians being: Dave Ornellas (vocals, guitar, percussion ), Mark Spook Kahn (guitar), Braam Malherbe (drums), Richard Johnson (bass), Keith Hutchinson (sax, flute, piano, organ) and Dave (session musician - percussion). In 1972 they released their 2nd album, Africa She Too Can Cry. On this album the musicians were Dave Ornellas (lead vocals), Mark Spook Kahn (guitar), Braam Malherbe (drums), Les Jet Goode (bass), Julian Ipi Laxton (guitar), Alfred Ali Lerefolo (African drums, vocals), Billy Knight Mashigo (percussion, vocals), Audrey Motaung (vocals) and Pete Kubheka (vocals). In 1974 their 3rd and final album was released, “Live And Well”, with the musicians being: Dave Ornellas (vocals, guitar, percussion), Mark Spook Kahn (guitar), Brahm Malherbe (drums), Les Jet Goode (bass), Julian Ipi Laxton (guitar), Julian Bahula (African drums, vocals), Billy Knight Mashigo (percussion, vocals), Audrey Motaung (vocals) and Pete Kubheka (vocals, percussion).

In 1971 they supported The Troggs on their South African tour, and in 1972 the band moved to London to try and crack the big time, also changing their name to Joburg Hawk. Their greatest success was an appearance at the Reading Festival in 1973. Due to permit and internal problems, the band broke up and the individual members made their way back to South Africa.

This song is off the album “African Day” released in 1971.

Check out the special CD by germany’s dynamic double act Milk & Sugar to commemorate their 20th anniversary, distributed via their label Milk & Sugar Recordings!

Since forming in 1997, Mike Kay and Steven Harding aka Milk & Sugar have lived a career most DJs would dream of. They’ve performed globally alongside dance royalty such as Frankie Knuckles and David Morales, remixed on request the likes of Jamiroquai, Janet Jackson & Ben Pearce, and have continued to supply dance floors with a steady stream of powerful hits, both via their own imprint and on revered labels such as Enormous Tunes, Positiva, Ministry of Sound and many more.

Despite boasting such an impressive back-catalogue, the pair were keen to ensure the album wasn’t solely focused on the past. We didn´t want to simply release a best of album with all of our past singles and remixes” they explain. “So we went to the studio and created new productions that sonically offer a more modern, electronic focused sound.”

These sessions lead to the creation of the duo’s three 2017 singles ‘Higher & Higher (Milk & Sugar remix)’, ‘Music Is Moving’ and most recently, their euphoric house anthem ‘Summertime’ – tracks all included on the album. Other new productions present include the soul-infused ‘Where Do We Go’, featuring English singer Jo Hall, the pulsating club-ready banger ‘You And I’, with Aquarian Dreams and their 2017 version of their timeless hit, ‘Let The Sun Shine’ – a song which reached No.1 in the US-Billboard Dance and Airplay charts upon release in 2003.

Despite the focus on the new, the album still features several of the duo’s most celebrated hits. This includes the euphoric-groover ‘My Lovin’ featuring iconic soul singer, Barbara Tucker (who also appears on ‘Needin U’), 'Bass (How Low Can You Go)' alongside Simon Harris and their massive 2013 anthem, ‘Canto Del Pilon’ - that has racked up over 6,5 million plays on Youtube since its release.

“It’s been an amazing 20 years for us”, state the pair. “Even this year we’re still performing at places we’ve not been before, taking our music to new audiences. We are looking forward to seeing what the next 20 years holds for us!”

With spending more than 20 years successfully in the music business already (and counting), German house legends MILK & SUGAR are still one solid rock in house music landscape. HEAT (AFRICAN DAY) will pump the blood back in your veins and raises your body temperature. The percussion driven and uplifting club track convinces also with a great vocal performance of NOMFUSI, famous South African actress and singer who sings about one hot day in Africa. Nomfusi is also known for her performance as Miriam Makeba in the Nelson Mandela movie called Long Walk To Freedom.
