  • South African Singers and Orchestras celebrate Africa Day with the ‘African Union Anthem’

    2:26

COVID-19 may be keeping everyone at home, but it hasn’t stopped the music! Bongani Tembe led a group of singers who recorded (whilst observing strict social distancing guidelines) the official African Union Anthem to celebrate Africa Day. They were accompanied by 100 musicians from the Johannesburg and KwaZulu-Natal Philharmonic Orchestras, who performed their parts from their respective homes. This collaboration resulted in a powerful and moving performance which aims to inspire hope, encourage compassion and motivate Africans across the continent to continue to support one another and work together to defeat this global pandemic.

  • African Day Suite by Hawk

    16:29

Hawk (a.k.a. 'Jo'burg Hawk') was a ground-breaking progressive rock band active in South Africa in the early 1970s. They effortlessly melded rock with African culture. This epic track in eight parts is from their 1972 album, Africa She Too Can Cry.

Description from the South African Rock Encyclopedia:
The 'African Day Suite' is a re-recorded and extended version of the side-long epic which originally appeared on 'African Day'. It tells the story, in spoken words, lyrics and music, of a rampaging elephant that threatens to destroy a tribal village and has to be killed. The fact that the censors missed the analogy to the oppressive apartheid regime at the time is amazing.

  • Hawk - African day

    17:07

One of the leading South African bands of the 1970s, with their own blend of Afro-rock. Their first album, African Day, was released in 1971, with the musicians being: Dave Ornellas (vocals, guitar, percussion ), Mark Spook Kahn (guitar), Braam Malherbe (drums), Richard Johnson (bass), Keith Hutchinson (sax, flute, piano, organ) and Dave (session musician - percussion). In 1972 they released their 2nd album, Africa She Too Can Cry. On this album the musicians were Dave Ornellas (lead vocals), Mark Spook Kahn (guitar), Braam Malherbe (drums), Les Jet Goode (bass), Julian Ipi Laxton (guitar), Alfred Ali Lerefolo (African drums, vocals), Billy Knight Mashigo (percussion, vocals), Audrey Motaung (vocals) and Pete Kubheka (vocals). In 1974 their 3rd and final album was released, “Live And Well”, with the musicians being: Dave Ornellas (vocals, guitar, percussion), Mark Spook Kahn (guitar), Brahm Malherbe (drums), Les Jet Goode (bass), Julian Ipi Laxton (guitar), Julian Bahula (African drums, vocals), Billy Knight Mashigo (percussion, vocals), Audrey Motaung (vocals) and Pete Kubheka (vocals, percussion).

In 1971 they supported The Troggs on their South African tour, and in 1972 the band moved to London to try and crack the big time, also changing their name to Joburg Hawk. Their greatest success was an appearance at the Reading Festival in 1973. Due to permit and internal problems, the band broke up and the individual members made their way back to South Africa.

This song is off the album “African Day” released in 1971.

    **This is NOT a March!

The meaning of groundings as popularised by Afrikan Guyanese scholar-activist historian, Dr Walter Rodney is explained in the following response provided in a dialogue between ‘Stop the Maangamizi: We Charge Genocide/Ecocide! Campaign activists on the question What are Groundings?

‘Groundings’ are popular education sessions with grassroots forces, including socially marginalised groups, workers, women, youth (including those in street organisations) for organising cells of resistance and action towards the concrete struggle for a new society and another World. The notion of Groundings are reflected in Rodney’s classic work ‘The Groundings with my Brothers’ chronicling first-hand reports of his mass movement organising, public lectures and reasonings in Jamaica and Canada; which was published by the London-based Bogle-L’Ouverture independent Black publishing house in 1969. These reasonings offered a powerful corrective to Eurocentric assumptions regarding what it meant to be ‘educated’ by breaking down the division between teachers and students (as co-producers of knowledge), at the heart of educational hierarchies.

Rodney’s ideas were deemed so dangerous by the Jamaican government that they declared him persona non grata and he was immediately dismissed from his position at the University of the West Indies in 1968. Both acts sparked violent protests in Jamaica in support of Rodney. Rodney took the view that institutional based scholars had to not only challenge the status quo of establishment academia but also engage in the mutual exchange of knowledge with those from struggling on the ground. To truly ‘ground’, Rodney praxis demonstrated that the revolutionary intellectual must go anywhere to reason with their people. This, of course, included going to places that most intellectuals of his stature would not have set foot in. Rodney, considered study and struggle inseparable (he exemplified how to bridge the gap between theory and praxis in a people's quest for liberation, hence the notion of 'guerrilla intellectualism' and warrior-scholarship in movement-building). So, with Groundings, the mutual production and dissemination of emancipatory ideas, has to also be accompanied by mass movement organising, led from the grassroots, in furtherance of building the capacity to usher in a new World, by our own People's Power! '

Groundings' are therefore a revolutionary notion because of the commitment to anti-imperialist, Afrikan socialist orientated mass-action which is geared towards bringing about the fundamental transformation of society and the class-based people stratification systems which necessarily involves challenging exploitative and oppressive systems of Power.

One way or another I'm gonna find ya
I'm gonna get ya, get ya, get ya, get ya
One way or another I'm gonna win ya
I'm gonna get ya, get ya, get ya, get ya
One way or another I'm gonna see ya
I'm gonna meet ya, meet ya, meet ya, meet ya
    One day, maybe next week
I'm gonna meet ya, I'm gonna meet ya, I'll meet ya
I will drive past your house
And if the lights are all down
    I'll see who's around
Lets go, one way or another I'm gonna find ya
I'm gonna get ya, get ya, get ya, get ya

And if the lights are all out
    I'll follow your bus downtown
    See who's hanging out
    One, two, three, four
Na na na na na na na na na

Check out the special CD by germany’s dynamic double act Milk & Sugar to commemorate their 20th anniversary, distributed via their label Milk & Sugar Recordings!

Since forming in 1997, Mike Kay and Steven Harding aka Milk & Sugar have lived a career most DJs would dream of. They’ve performed globally alongside dance royalty such as Frankie Knuckles and David Morales, remixed on request the likes of Jamiroquai, Janet Jackson & Ben Pearce, and have continued to supply dance floors with a steady stream of powerful hits, both via their own imprint and on revered labels such as Enormous Tunes, Positiva, Ministry of Sound and many more.

Despite boasting such an impressive back-catalogue, the pair were keen to ensure the album wasn’t solely focused on the past. We didn´t want to simply release a best of album with all of our past singles and remixes” they explain. “So we went to the studio and created new productions that sonically offer a more modern, electronic focused sound.”

These sessions lead to the creation of the duo’s three 2017 singles ‘Higher & Higher (Milk & Sugar remix)’, ‘Music Is Moving’ and most recently, their euphoric house anthem ‘Summertime’ – tracks all included on the album. Other new productions present include the soul-infused ‘Where Do We Go’, featuring English singer Jo Hall, the pulsating club-ready banger ‘You And I’, with Aquarian Dreams and their 2017 version of their timeless hit, ‘Let The Sun Shine’ – a song which reached No.1 in the US-Billboard Dance and Airplay charts upon release in 2003.

Despite the focus on the new, the album still features several of the duo’s most celebrated hits. This includes the euphoric-groover ‘My Lovin’ featuring iconic soul singer, Barbara Tucker (who also appears on ‘Needin U’), 'Bass (How Low Can You Go)' alongside Simon Harris and their massive 2013 anthem, ‘Canto Del Pilon’ - that has racked up over 6,5 million plays on Youtube since its release.

“It’s been an amazing 20 years for us”, state the pair. “Even this year we’re still performing at places we’ve not been before, taking our music to new audiences. We are looking forward to seeing what the next 20 years holds for us!”

With spending more than 20 years successfully in the music business already (and counting), German house legends MILK & SUGAR are still one solid rock in house music landscape. HEAT (AFRICAN DAY) will pump the blood back in your veins and raises your body temperature. The percussion driven and uplifting club track convinces also with a great vocal performance of NOMFUSI, famous South African actress and singer who sings about one hot day in Africa. Nomfusi is also known for her performance as Miriam Makeba in the Nelson Mandela movie called Long Walk To Freedom.

  • BIRTHPLACE OF THE SUN - Earth Song with Africas Stonehenge

    5:22

Deya Dova recording Birthplace of the Sun, live with the Earth at one of the oldest stone circles in the world. Inzalo Y’langa also known as Adam’s Calendar is estimated to be 75,000 years old and is located close to the epicenter of UVG Grid Point 41, South Africa.

From the 4 year Planetary Grid Music Journey singing and recording with the resonance of living breathing Earth - Gaia - at over 33 locations across the planet.

As a recording artist my creative process is to listen to the Earth and from a place of stillness spontaneously sing in response to the land - in honouring and reverence. The video footage organically follows the live recording of the song as it unfolds in the moment. It is not like a usual music video with set shots, repeated takes and singing to a prerecorded song. It is on the fly, live location recording with ancient Earth. Enjoy!

I am in the full mid day African sun looking out to a land of gold and lost pyramids. Around me great dolomite monoliths stand, hauled in from hundreds of miles away to mark the poignancy of this Earth energy point. I am between the two large marker stones at the centre of the ancient Earth Calendar.

I’ve been listening to the land since dawn and now a strong, feminine energy moves in through the space wanting to be sung. It calls me to the South of the circle, marked by a wild tree splitting a cardinally aligned stone. Like a living embodiment of the Tree of Life, it’s roots crack open the great stone seed.

The song is a celebration, broadcasting the longevity & fertility of the land. I am filled with a joyous and renewing memory. Connecting with the birthplace of Humanity. As I sing I experience the high veld grassland flowering in it’s being sung. Just like a woman the Earth blossoms in her being honoured and adored. The energy of the Mother sings in the Birthplace of the Sun. Here where Heaven mated Earth.

Birthplace of the Sun is the title track from album #10 of the Planetary Grid Music Collection.
