    11:08

VIVALDI - La Stravaganza (Fabio Biondi, Europa Galante)
    Album available here:

Europa Galante, under its director Fabio Biondi, recently paid Vivaldi a fabulous tribute (BBC Radio 3) with the recording of the opera Ercole sul Termodonte, reconstructed by Biondi himself. Now they further expand their rich catalogue of Vivaldi's works with six concertos -- five from La Stravaganza and another in F major -- published as a set in London in 1728 by John Walsh and a pillar of the composer's international fame in his lifetime.

Concerto In C Major ‘Con Molti Istromenti’ RV 558 (1740)
for two recorders, two chalumeaux, two mandolins,
two theorbos, two violins ‘in tromba marina’*, cello, strings, and continuo (First Performance, 1740)
    I: Allegro molto 00:00

    The English Concert
    Trevor Pinnock, conductor

Painting: Jan Vermeer, A young Woman seated at the Virginals, ca 1670-1672

    * There are no trumpets in this piece. The solo violins in this piece are instructed to imitate the sound of a marine trumpet (tromba marina) which was not a brass instrument, but a large bowed instrument and one string with a very buzzy tone. Vivaldi adapted some violins owned by the Pietà for roles like this by attaching pieces of metal to the bridge which would rattle on the body of the instrument.

  • A. Vivaldi: Concerti con Molti Strumenti Jacob Reuven & IMS

    4:31

The Israeli Mandolin Soloists is a chamber ensemble composed entirely of plucked string instruments. Yaki Reuven, an artist who in recent years has been taking care of the next generation of Israeli mandolin players, saw it as his duty to preserve the rigorous specialization track in artistic mandolin playing in the Jerusalem Academy of Music, and created a group of Israeli performers, that will serve as a home for those excellent artists who graduate from his class at the Academy. The ensemble is rooted in the Beer-Sheva Conservatory. The best mandolin soloists in the world studied in this conservatory, and the collaboration with the Jerusalem Academy created one of the loveliest establishments that we have in our country, with plucked string instruments. “The sounds of the Beer-Sheva mandolin orchestra remains with me as a childhood memory, which had turned me into a musician” (Yaki Reuven). This ensemble endeavors to create the new out of the old, to connect these wonderful musicians who grow in Israel and turn them into a superb musical ensemble, which holds together the roots of the “Beer-Sheva-Jerusalem” school and enjoys the international standing and knowledge accumulated by the Israeli mandolin soloists over the last twenty years. The rare sound of a mandolin ensemble of this kind inspires also new writings, alongside the renewal of string orchestra repertoire. The main purpose of the ensemble is to promote the commission of new works. It concentrates in performing 21st-century music and it arranges and presents fresh performances of classical music, which is originally written for string orchestras – as well as original music for mandolin. The Mandolin Soloists do not only play. They hold “excellence forum” meetings at the Academy, in order to study and further develop and promote the level of mandolin playing in Israel and abroad. The ensemble is home to the outstanding students in the academy. They also participate in a pedagogical project, in which they teach mandolin students in schools in underprivileged neighborhoods in Beer-Sheva, in the south of the Negev. They all play solo instruments made by Arik Kerman, who made himself available to improve the instruments played by the ensemble. The construction of those unique instruments and the establishment of the ensemble were made possible by the Sarney family, which has been donating to the Beer-Sheva Conservatory for decades.

    Finally, the complete concerto!
Here is one of my oldest arrangements (15 years old at least). After scouring through scores of Vivaldi concerti to find the one that John Williams played solo in a concert, I stumbled upon this gem.
We love to play this live, as the full texture really fills the hall with sound.
The sheet music will be available for purchase this week. If you would like a copy, please send an email to info@classicalguitarist.ca and i'll personally write to you when it is ready.
    Enjoy!

It is remarkable that concertos by Vivaldi are still awaiting their first recordings, and this CD programmes 8 ‘solemn’ concertos. Solemn in this context usually meant a slow introduction, acting as a prelude to the following 3 movements. Vivaldi was a master at creating concertos from other works, and these were known as ‘pasticcio’ concertos. For example, sinfonias or overtures to his many operas provided a happy hunting ground for such concertos, and on this CD the concertos are a mix of Vivaldi’s pasticcios and those of the Pablo Queipo de Llano, a Vivaldi scholar and author the comprehensive CD booklet essay.

To illustrate how adept Vivaldi was at turning existing works to new uses, the finale of RV197 was originally the double fugue from the overture to the serenata La senna festeggiante RV693. This had in turn been adapted by Vivaldi from the closing section of Lotti’s Moralita d’una perla. The opening movement of RV155 was reused by Vivaldi for his Salve Regina RV618
The tradition of pasticcio concertos arranged from other composer’s works was common practice at the Dresden court, where the director was Johann Georg Pisendal, a pupil of Vivaldi. Many movements by Vivaldi were found among the manuscripts in Dresden, and form the basis for these reconstructions.

Among Vivaldi’s 600 or so concertos, those for keyboard – organ or harpsichord are surprisingly small in number for this most prolific of baroque composers.

Of these works, nine in all, there are also several rather tantalising fragments and odd movements, and all betray in the keyboard writing, the composer’s genius as a violinist. The right hand plays violinistic figurations, whilst the left more often than not plays a simple bass line. Interestingly, many of these concertos are arrangements by Vivaldi of concertos for other forces with the exception of RV541 and 542 - both composed as violin and organ concertos. The 2nd movement of RV541 is especially effective with the organ accompanying the violin with a discreet bass line and three-note chords on the right hand. Vivaldi calls for an improvised cadenza in the finale.

I begin this new year reminding Arcangelo Corelli .. Who died on this day in Rome, January 8, 1713 ... was one of the great violinists and composers of Baroque Music ... In 1682 he became first violinist of the orchestra chapel in the church of St. Louis of the French , the national church of the French community in Rome. In 1684 he entered the Congregation dei Virtuosi di Santa Cecilia , the same year he took the name Arcomelo Erimanteo . By 1700 , Corelli and was first violinist and concert Palace of the Chancellery. His fame was such that in 1706 he entered the Academy of Arcadia, a very high distinction at the time, where he met Domenico Scarlatti . Two years later he meets Handel. He died in Rome on January 8, 1713 , and was buried in the cemetery of the church of Santa Maria ad Martyrs ( Pantheon ) .
Corelli is considered one of the great pioneers of the pre-classical sonata and the representative par excellence of the concerto grosso . Corelli 's music had a great influence on German composers , especially Bach and Handel. After Franz Joseph Haydn, Corelli 's works were published and republished the most of your time.

After the enormous success of Vivaldi’s earlier collections La Stravaganza and L’Estro Armonico, his publisher Estienne Roger was eager to capitalise on the composer’s soaring popularity. With that in mind, Op.7 was published in 1720 containing 12 new concertos, ten for solo violin and two for solo oboe. However, it seems unlikely Vivaldi either authorised or approved of this publication, and recent research has even discovered that the authenticity of the concertos is doubtful, with at least the two oboe concertos certainly not by Vivaldi. The concertos may not bear the traditional Vivaldian hallmarks, with movements simplified or moved around, but they are still a worthy tribute to the composer, whether penned by the ‘Prete Rosso’ himself or not.

Federico Guglielmo leads his experienced and lively ensemble L’Arte dell’Arco from the front. A highly acclaimed soloist, Guglielmo has been an active performer on the early music circle for many years, having played alongside such groups as the Academy of Ancient Music and the Handel & Haydn Society of Boston. This time he is joined by oboist Pier Luigi Fabretti, who has previously performed with Concerto Köln and I Barocchisti, among others.

his new instalment of the complete recording of Vivaldi’s Op. 112 contains the 12 Violin Concertos Op. 7, published in Amsterdam in 1720. Prompted by the popular success of the previously published La Stravaganza and L’Estro Armonico Vivaldi wrote these concertos in the same vein: brilliant, dramatic, full of the vitality of Mediterranean life and colours.
Played by the Italian Early Music group “L’Arte dell’Arco, led by violinist (and soloist) Federico Guglielmo. French magazine Diapason wrote about them: ”they understand the secret language of Vivaldi…rich and generous instrumental textures envelop the expressive lines of the solo violin…”

Vivica GENAUX - Vivaldi 'Pyrotechnics', opera arias
    Europa Galante / Fabio Biondi
    CD available on:

Vivica Genaux, completes recording of Vivaldis opera Bajazet, follows her 2006 solo recital of Handel and Hasse with this brilliant new programme of Vivaldi arias, some never before recorded .
The dazzling arias in this programme some of which have never been recorded or, indeed, performed in concert illustrate the different phases and forms of Vivaldian pyrotechnics, exploring every emotion and the most diverse dramatic situations, and continually varying instrumentation, tonality and tempo. The composer of the Four Seasons, flamboyant as ever, sets his unique operatic stamp.

    About this Album:
Stravinsky famously quipped that Vivaldi didn’t write 400 concertos, rather he wrote one concerto 400 times. Rather unfair, though witty. For many people though, Vivaldi is the composer of The Four Seasons (the first four of the twelve concertos Op.8), and maybe the famous Gloria. He is a composer who repays closer attention. There are some superb concertos in his large output, and some of them were sufficiently striking enough to attract the attention of J.S. Bach and Johann Quantz. His concertos are remarkable not only for the wealth of invention and the outstanding quality of the music, but also for the amazing range of instruments he wrote for.

This release is devoted to concertos for sopranino and alto recorders. Two of his greatest concertos ‘Tempesta di mare’ (Storm at Sea) and ‘La notte’ (Night) feature on the programme.
