We’ve chosen the brand new California Tweed, the Fillmore and the Triple Crown to demonstrate a huge range of sounds available, and perhaps not quite what you’d expect from Boogie!

In this episode I test the Mesa Boogie Fillmore 50. I'm looking for a portable, versatile amp and this might be the one.

I'm a Mesa Boogie fan and user for almost 30 years, and this Mesa Boogie Fillmore 50 really ticks a lot of boxes.

  • Mesa Boogie Road King II Amplifier | INSIDERS View | A Closeup Inside and Out Review | Tony Mckenzie

    8:26

Some like them, some don't. But there is absolutely no denying that Mesa Boogie probably make some of the finest quality amps available anywhere in the world today - particularly against the backdrop of Chinese stuff invading every country. Now there is some good Chinese stuff - but it's a rare beast.

Whereas - Mesa Boogie? Check out this Road King II from an INSIDERS view and I'm sure that it's very difficult to argue against the fact that these are AWESOME USA amps and really take some beating in the quality stakes.

While the price here in the UK is simply price fixed by the sole distributor (and has been for years - would you pay $4500 for one of these?), they simply rip you off big time at UK prices. In the USA it's another story.

The Mesa Boogie amps are (in my opinion) priced right for what you get (in the USA), are world class and you ain't seeing this quality from China - period. Marshall, or Fender, or Egnater or any of the other contenders of mid priced stuff come even close to this standard of workmanship and quality.

That does not mean the others are bad! What it means is that Mesa Boogie is better. But it's all subjective in the music world - except for the quality, the component quality, the build quality, the innovation and other stuff that is stuck in hardware... and most Tube amps are.

So there you have it - but here's a link to the written review which is different: and I sincerely hope you like that written review - it took me days on end.

Please subscribe and ring the bell... its appreciated.

Why not visit my site to see what else you are missing out on? There's reviews, amps, guitars, effects, accessories all reviewed and my music which you will either love or hate... but like I said - the music IS subjective... the equipment? I'll leave it to you to make up your own mind...

    See you all soon...

  • MESA/Boogie California Tweed™ 6V6 4:Forty Multi-Watt Comparison

    2:25

This video showcases the wide range of volume, clip potential and tones available from the Multi-Watt switch on the California Tweed. Gig-level volumes are available at 40, 30 & 20 watts, while the lower volume 10 and 2 watt settings offer authentic tweed clip, overdrive and grind, particularly when pushed with higher gain settings or hotter input signals.

At 40 watts, both rhythm and single note sounds are crisp, snappy and detailed. There’s plenty of headroom from the four 6V6 power section for any gig while getting some classic tweed sting and bite with the Gain control set above 12:00.

30 watts introduces clip and sag to the sound and feel, yet still retains plenty of headroom for louder playing and gigging. you’ll also notice higher frequencies starting smooth out and roll off as you increase the Master and power tube clipping.

20 watts provides the perfect in-between range of clip and overdrive vs. headroom for small club performance. There’s a familiar sag from the power section at this wattage, as well as an elastic bloom in the bass when power tubes are pushed in this setting.

10 watts begins to add a heavy haze of harmonic clip around single notes while high frequencies begin to roll off noticeably. Lower register rhythm and chording will begin to show rougher edges of power tube clip that work so well for traditional Blues sounds .

2 watts provides the potential to connect with reckless power tube saturation, but don’t count this wattage out for addictive, expressive single note lead tones. Finding the sweet spot on the Gain, Tone and Master controls is worthy of exploration, especially in home playing and studio environments. This wattage setting alone could be it’s own amp and exploring the extremes of settings in this wattage is highly recommended.

Available as a 1x12 combo or medium 23” head, the California Tweed Series also welcomes two vintage-tuned, matching 1x12 & 2x12 extension cabinets that deliver the classic resonance of the Cali-Tweed voice.

Original composition played by Kris Dilbeck of Mesa Customer Service. Nash Guitars S63 with Lollar single coil pickups through with a California Tweed Head and 2x12 cabinets with Jensen Black Bird speakers. Mic’d with a Shure SM57, Shure KSM313 and an Avatone CK-40 Stereo Room mic. Mixed 33% SM57, 33% KSM313, and 33% Avatone CK-40.

  • MESA/Boogie Fillmore™ 25 & 50 Comparison Demo

    4:23

While the Fillmore™ 25 & Fillmore™ 50 share the same preamp, controls and speakers, the two amps offer different power tube types and, in their 1x12 combo format, different cabinet sizes. Dinesh Lekhraj from the Mesa/Boogie Hollywood store talks and plays us through some of the differences between these two amps.

The Fillmore 25 is the smaller and more compact of the two amps and the 1x12 combo weighs in at 35lbs while the Fillmore 50 1x12 wide body combo weighs in at 45 lbs. Despite having the same speaker, the Fillmore 50 offers more low end width and and a bit more punch, while the Fillmore 25 combo, housed in the classic Boogie 1x12 combo size, offers a bit of an upper midrange bump that cuts through a mix in gigging situations.

The Fillmore 25 uses 6V6 power tubes - the first dedicated 6V6 power section for a Mesa amp - and the preamp and power section are perfectly blended here. There’s an amazing threshold of clip and classic 6V6 grit and growl. In both Fillmore 25 and 50, dialing in the gain to taste between the three modes will deliver a wide range of authentic vintage-inspired Tones from sparkling cleans, subtle clip and drive, singing and sustaining single note solo sounds, and classic crunch and grinding rock rhythm gain.

Recorded with a Nash S57 with Lollar pickups in the Fillmore 25 and Fillmore 50 1x12 combos. Mic’d with a SAhure SM57 and Share KSM 313 and an H4N stereo room mic and mixed 33% SM57, 33% KSM313 and 33% H4N.

  • MESA/Boogie 50th Anniversary - CHAPTER THREE: Taking it to the edge.

    4:45

In this 3rd Chapter of the MESA® 50th Anniversary Celebration, Randall Smith recounts the inspiration and goals behind the creation of the Dual Rectifier® Solo Head, the Brand’s most bombastic and successful model ever that ruled Rock's airwaves throughout the ‘90s and early 2000s and is still popular today. He also explains the reasoning behind the two Signature Models the Company ever agreed to do at the request of the original Boogie® Ambassador and Deacon, Carlos Santana and modern Guitar Virtuoso John Petrucci, both of whom have identifiable but different Tone that has become somewhat synonymous with the Brand’s legacy sounds.

In this series of short videos, Randall and iconic guitarists look back and touch on the things that first drew them to the “Family” and share what the amplifiers have done for their playing and their music. From the early inspiration and beginnings in the late '60s and early ‘70s, through the “Big 80s” and Guitar-Culture sea change of the 90s, up through the new Millennium and today, Randall and his team of fiercely passionate “band mates” as he calls them, have contributed every major feature found on modern amplifiers and a universe of iconic Tone to the sound of the electric guitar, changing it forever more.

From inventing the pivotal High Gain Preamp in the first Mark i's, to Footswitchable Modes and Effects Loops in the Mark II's, to Multi-Channel/Multi-Mode Preamps in the Mark III's, IV's and V's and Dual Rectifiers, to the several patented tunable Tube power, wiring and operating class configurations found throughout, the innovation and pioneering spirit has remained at the forefront of the small Northern California Company’s ethic.

Enjoy this up close and personal look into the history of MESA/Boogie with Randall and company highlighting points along a 50-year journey that would lead to MESA's cult status leaving an indelible mark on the sound of amplified guitar and modern music.

  • A closer look at relic guitars...with the help of some old friends!

    22:38

Relic guitars are something of a controversial topic, splitting opinion right down the middle; some people love them while others just don’t understand them!

While there is by no means a right or wrong answer, we thought we would try and highlight just how incredibly close to the originals some of the high end builders can get.

In this video Jack takes a closer look at our original ’62 Strat, ’64 Tele and ’84 Les Paul Custom and compares them to modern day offerings from Dale Wilson, Xotic and the Gibson Custom Shop.

    13:23

Soldano's Super Lead Overdrive 100 set the standard for modern high-gain amplification. Back in 1987, Seattle-native Mike Soldano built one of the first high-gain amp heads, with searing harmonics and the perfect balance of gain, sustain and tight touch response, the SLO completely changed what players came to expect from amps. Favoured by artists as varied as Mick Mars, Eric Clapton and Mark Knopfler, the SLO-100 was the blueprint for Eddie Van Halens famous 5150 amp.

The new Soldano Super Lead Overdrive 100 delivers upon the SLOs legendary reputation in both appearance and performance but with the addition of some wildly popular, player-requested features.

Jack runs you through the return of the Soldano SLO-100, what features have made the SLO-100 such a highly regarded amplifier and some of the revisions that have been made to this pivotal amp, which has taken it to yet another level.

We wanted to show off just how versatile this amplifier was, so we used a range of guitars and pedals to really show what its made of. Including, a Fender Custom Shop Strat, a Gibson Custom 1968 Les Paul and even a Mayones Aquila covering clean, crunch and high gain tones respectively.

    6:57

This 2nd Chapter of MESA’s 50th Anniversary Celebration finds Founder and President Randall Smith sharing his perspective on the impact of his landmark discovery, the cascading High Gain preamp and the contribution the MARK I became to guitar amplification. Throughout, numerous Guitar Greats reflect on their first encounter with this game-changing and pivotal MARK I’s performance. Randall also shares the passion that drove him on to continuing refinement throughout the MARK II’s evolution during the 1980s.

  • A Closer Look At Dr Z Maz Amplifiers

    27:50

The Dr Z Maz series is one of the best value hand wired amps on the planet, crafted in Cleveland, Ohio, they brings an old school attitude and monster tones.
A firm favourite here at Peach, the Maz is used for the majority of our product listing videos, and is a go-to piece of gear for many members of staff.

Delivering rich singing tones from single coils and sweet British crunch from humbuckers, you can dial in anything from clean chimey tones to raw vintage drive.
The MKII takes the old spec and adds a few new features to make this the ultimate grab and go studio/stage amp.
With a revised master volume circuit you can achieve your desired tone at any volume, even down to whisper quiet while the new buffered effects loop is another top feature of the MKII.

In this video Jack demonstrates the 18 NR, 18 Reverb and 38 Reverb and shows why this is one of the greatest amplifiers of recent years!

  • Mesa California Tweed 6V6 4:40 Guitar Amp Mick’s Vlog That Pedal Show

    27:53

I’ve used Mesa amps for most of my life. What are my impressions of the California Tweed 6V6 4:40?

Life too short for long YouTube videos? Please see the ‘Interesting bits and go-to sections’ information below.

Welcome to the show! This is a bit of a departure from the norm. Regular viewers will know that we don’t really do ‘reviews’ on That Pedal Show… but I’ve sure done my fair share in my time as a guitar journalist!
Much more interestingly, I’m a long-time user of Mesa amps in my playing life, right from when I was about 15/16, which was in 1989/1990, just for the record. Ha! So when the Cali Tweed came out, my interest was piqued as it’s quite a different deal for Mesa/Boogie. You can read all about it on Mesa’s website, but the single-channel format, classic Tweed-era-inspired tones and all-new Jensen Alnico speaker are all significant departures for the company over the past couple of decades.
In this video I plug in with a handful of classic guitar types as well as do a very brief comparison with my 6L6-loaded 100-watt Lone Star Classic (ie NOT an EL84 30-watt Lone Star Special… which is also an excellent amp).
Clearly there’s always more to explore – the finer details of settings, speakers, cabs, mics and all that – but hopefully this gives you an outline idea of what it does.

    How this is recorded…
Both amps have Sontronics Delta 2 ribbon mics placed in the same relative positions from the speaker grille. The preamps and subsequent EQ settings are //exactly// the same. There are also stereo room mics (in a mid-side) configuration, so you may hear some slight differences in the stereo field based on the amps’ physical position in the room.

    What Lone Star is yours?
The Classic 100-watt. Not the 30-watt Special.

ETHICS STATEMENT: No gear manufacturer has ever paid to be featured on That Pedal Show. We do not accept payment from any manufacturers. Mesa did not pay for this video in any way, and nor did they ask me to make the video. They sent the amp for me to try (as a long time Boogie fan and user), and in the hope that we may use it on the show during its stay… if we like it.
Then Covid came along, lots of people asked me to make this video in our social media comments, so I did. I hope that’s clear.

    Enjoy the episode!

  • MESA/Boogie 50th Anniversary - CHAPTER ONE: How it all began.

    4:15

MESA/Boogie Ltd., the Original Boutique Amplifier Company, celebrates 50 Years in Business here with Founder, Designer and President Randall Smith and many of the Guitar Legends that have relied on, and in some cases, who’s trademark Tone has become synonymous with his designs and the Boogie Sound.

In this first Chapter, we hear from Founder Randy Smith and Icon Carlos Santana about the early inspiration for the Mark I, Carlos' reaction to the newfound possibilities of limitless sustain separated from volume, and how Carlos’ involvement in this early Tone Revolution spread the news about this pivotal development in electric guitar sounds among the World’s top Touring Artists like the Rolling Stones and other Guitar Greats from the Bay Area and beyond.
