  • Terris - Fabricated Lunacy

    3:35

Terris were a Welsh indie band who had a minor UK hit single in 2001 with Fabricated Lunacy.
Founded in Newport in 1998, they were fronted by Gavin Goodwin, supported by Alun Bound on guitar, Neil Dugmore on keyboards and Owen Matthews on drums.[1]

After playing locally for two years, they were spotted by former 60ft Dolls singer Richard Parfitt, who became their manager, and got them a deal with Rough Trade Records.[1]

The band released The Time Is Now, their first EP, in 1999 on Rough Trade.[1] This gained them prominent support from the New Musical Express magazine, which hailed them as a 21st Century Joy Division and the best new band in the UK, and featured them on its front cover in January 2000.[1][2][3][4] Also that year, the group co-headlined a tour with Coldplay and won the brightest hope at the 2000 NME Brats.

They subsequently signed to the Blanco y Negro label, releasing two further singles, the second of which, Fabricated Lunacy, reached number 62 on the UK Singles Chart.[1] Debut album Learning to Let Go was released in March 2001.[1] Critical reaction was mixed, with Allmusic commenting on Goodwin's grating, tune-seeking vocal grunts and the band's leg-splayed, Bush-styled grunge-metal hooks and glaringly obvious lyrical themes.[5] Yahoo Music described it as underflavoured, bland stodge.[2] The NME's April Long was more positive, giving it an 8 out of 10 rating and calling it a vociferous statement of intent from a band dedicated to annihilating clichés.[3] Disappointing sales led to them being dropped in December of that year.[6] The band split up shortly afterwards.[7]

In recent years a euphemism applied to bands that receive glowing reviews from the NME but are viewed with suspicion by the general public is that they are the new Terris.

Gavin Goodwin is now a PhD student at Cardiff University.

  • John Peels Sounds of the Suburbs - South Wales

    13:11

Thanks to citypoison for this !!! A 1999 Channel 4 series in which John Peel visits British towns that spawned musical trends. John Peel continues his musical foray in the valleys of South Wales. He visits Rockaway Records in Newport, where he talks with the proprietor Simon Phillips about the local music scene. Also in Newport he talks with Richard Parfitt and Mike Cole of the group 60 Foot Dolls about the economic situation in Wales. In the Welsh hillsides he meets artist and singer-songwriter Lucie Chivers, who talks about the influence of landscape on her work. In Cwmaman, he meets Jason Knott the frontman of the group Reviver Gene who talks about life in the ex-mining town. Artist David Garner talks about his work, which is made from artifacts salvaged from closed pits and forms a commentary on the resulting unemployment. Electronic musician Richard Thomas talks to John about his approach to ambient sound. The programme ends with John Peel attending a performance by Reviver Gene at the TJ's venue in Newport.

60ft Dolls @ (old)Spaceland when the stage was on the other end. I only got to see them twice, this show and Viper Room. Not sure if they ever made it back. I loved this band so I borrowed my friend's 8mm cam to tape it. I haven't seen this tape since recorded (23 years).
