  • Hip Hop Vocal Mixing // Using EQ

    3:59

One of the most important aspects of working with vocals in any Digital Audio Workstation is using EQ. EQ, which stands for Equalization, is the process of shaping a sound using its own frequencies. EQs are a huge part of creating a professional vocal sound, and understanding how to use them is a fundamental skill for any Producer or Audio Engineer.

The following strategies outline one way that Resonate Music Engineer and Producer, Conor Conch Wharton, likes to use an EQ to shape a vocal.

    Transcript:

Today we're talking about mixing rap ad-lib vocals. Now, when a rap ad-lib is in the mix, you have to make a determination — if that ad-lib is meant to be felt or heard. In this particular case and tutorial I will be showing you what to do when you want the ad-lib to be heard. Now, what that means is that the ad-lib is going to up and present in the mix.

The goal here is to be able to have the ad-lib up but not distracting from the lead vocal. So here's the plan of attack. We are going to remove anything that would get in the way of hearing the lead vocal, anything that would pull the ear away from the lead vocal, and then we're going to set the level of where we want it.

Now, in order to make this work, you have to have the lead vocal basically treated or completely treated the way you want it to sound, because what we're going to do is we are going to mix the ad-lib vocal against the lead vocal. That's our barometer, that's what's going to determine if we're doing it right. So I'm going to play this for you without the ad-libs in. You're just going to hear the treated lead vocal and the untreated track in the background. Oh, also the rapper is a really awesome rapper named Jean Grae. She signed Talib Kweli's label, Blacksmith.

    [rap vocals]

So let's bring in the ad-lib vocal here and what I'm going to do is I'll start bringing it up until it starts to step all over the lead vocal.

    [rap vocals]

So now I'm going to grab an EQ, I'm going to grab a ten-band EQ and I'm going to go town and remove everything I don't like. Remember, it's a backup vocal. You're not going to hear it in solo, it doesn't need to shine, it doesn't need to stand on it's own. It needs to get the heck out of the way. So here we go.

    [rap vocals]

Next thing I'm going to do, and by the way, that was kind of half- assed, like the actual curve that I ended up going with was this one which is similar, but I'm just going to copy and paste that over. I just wanted to run through it to give you the idea. Okay. The next step I'm going to do is, anytime the vocal jumps, that's going to tell my ear, Listen to that. A sudden noise. So if she leans too much into one of her words, that's going to pull my ear away from the lead vocals. So I'm going to use some compression.

My compression thought process is very different. Normally when I'm compressing vocals I'm thinking either I just want to subtly control things or I want to use compression to thicken up the entire sound and move the sound forward. In this case we don't want the sound to move forward. We want it to stay in the background and we want to heavily control the peaks. So that's our mentality. When you think about it and when you put in the mentality of what you want to happen you can start to dissect what needs to happen.

I want to heavily control the peaks. That means I need a fast attack. I don't the sustain of the vocal to come forward relative to the attack, so I need a slower release. Using that as my barometer I can figure it out. What I've done is I'm not using the highest ratio. I don't want it to sound like the vocal is stressed. I want it to be still natural-sounding, but I'm setting the threshold pretty low.

    [rap vocals]

    Listen to the word rap

    [vocals]

A lot more controlled. Now, you may have also noticed though that the vocal became muddier. Well, you've got to keep an ear out for that kind of stuff. Here's the before and after in solo mode.

    [vocals]

There's a little extra bit of woofy-tubbiness that shows up, so as a result, as a reaction, keeping my ears open and being aware of what's going on, I'm doing a little bit more EQ after the compression.

    [rapping]

Other things that need to be addressed, any ess-iness at all, we can get that out of the way. The ear is going to hear plenty of s because it's already in the vocals. So I'm going to de-ess the crud out of this. I actually ended up using two de-essers.

    [rapping]

But no lack of ess when it's actually in the hip-hop mix. All right. I'm panning it off. I've got two of these things that sort of play off each other so I'm thinking hard-left hard-right. I'm going to create a nice movement across the stereo field. That's what I'm going with and then I'm just going to find a volume I like.

  • How to Mix Rap Vocals

    32:53

When it comes to mixing vocals, the struggle is real! The most important part of any song, is almost always the most complicated instrument to mix. The reason for this is because with all that's going on in a mix, the vocal has to be the one to stand out. Oftentimes it needs to be front and center, right in your face...which is not an easy task.

So much goes into mixing a vocal, especially when it was not well recorded. This particular vocal mix was from a song with Range and Chris Weaver. I used an Ehrlund EHR-M condenser mic into an Apollo Twin Duo API unison mic pre.

This was a great setup, but I think I did make one big mistake though. I was paranoid about the acoustics in my vocal booth and wanted some extra absorption, so I put the sE reflection filter on. I didn't realize at the time, but having the mic lodged too deep into the filter made the mic pic up some excess low frequency build up, causing me to have to cut that muddy sound considerably. I had no choice but to fix it in the mix!

Thanks for watching! Leave a comment and let me know what you think!

  • Mixing Rap Vocals | Jaycen Joshua ITB Technique | with Acustica Acqua Series & Harrison Mixbus

    1:13:55

In this video I show you how to mix rap vocals using the Jaycen Joshua ITB Vocal Chain setup. This experiment is to create context about mixing in general. It also highlights some of the cool plugins Acustica offers. I'm using harrison mixbus to take advantage of it's analog colored channel strips and tape saturation on the mix busses.

    Topics Include:
    - Simple Vox High Pass with Acustica Ebony filter models
    - Vox Compression with Acustica Ebony Compressor Models
    - EQ Shelfing with Acustica Diamond Lift
    - Multi-Band / De-Ess w/ Neutron EQ
    - Air EQ for Vocals using Acustica Diamond
    - Parallel Compression with UAD Blue Face
    - Creating space with Lemon Multi-Tap Delay & Ebony Plate Reverb
    - Treating Samples with Diamond EQ

Please Note: In the video i mention Zero Latency (ZL) models of acustica plugins. These are actually more CPU intensive in exchange for latency adjustment. (I said this backwards during video). Also note, sonically, the characteristics are the same in either - only change is CPU / Latency.

    Transcript:

    Hey guys, Matthew Weiss,

I'm going to try to give you a quick one today, see how much we can do in maybe, a couple of minutes. We're going to be talking about, lead vocal reverbs. Now, here I have a nice little vocal.

    [vocals 0:22 - 0:34]

Nice sounding vocal, pretty close to where it would be in the finished record, here it is in context.

    [vocals 0:40 - 0:44]

Sounds good but it's totally dry, so we are going to pick a reverb. Now, anytime you're picking a reverb especially an algorithm, you have a lot of options. And that can be the toughest thing. You've got plates, you've got halls, you've got rooms, you've got chambers, you've got non-linear reverbs.

So how do you choose? Well I like to grab a reverb plug-in that I like and in this case I'm using the Manny Marroquin Signature series and I'll just go through. I'll turn the reverb way up and I'll go through the different possibilities for what I could be choosing and hear how they sound with the lead vocal in context. So, here for example is a plate.

    [vocals 1:25 - 1:30]

    Sounds good. Here's a chamber.

    [vocals 1:34 - 1:40]

So, there's a difference between the two. The plate is more upper-mid-range focus. It's a little denser, it's a little, I want to say, choppier. The chamber is a little bit smoother. It's more open in the upper-mid-range and a little more low-mid focus and so you choose which is better based on the context.

I think for Russell's voice, I prefer the chamber here, so we're going to roll with that. Also, I've set the timing, I've adjusted the pre-delay, still keeping in mind how it sounds against the main vocal. Even added like a little tiny phaser effect in here that I'm just tucking in subtly which I think is kind of cool.

    [rap vocals 2:25 - 2:33]

Notice how the s really spikes through. I'm going to de-ess on the way to the reverb.

    [rap vocals 2:38 - 2:44]

Yeah, that's a lot better. I'm also going to add a little bit of, well actually quite a bit, of quarter note delay here going into the reverb feed.

    [rap vocals 2:53 - 2:58]

And now there's a lot of tones that I really want to take out here. There's a mid-range tone, I don't need all that high-end I'm going to suck out some of the frequency build up.

    [rap vocals 3:11 - 3:23]

And a little bit more of that here.

    [music - 3:26 - 3:31]

I'm going to tuck the reverb back down.

    [vocals 3:34 - 3:39]

And here it is in context.

    [vocals 3:42 - 3:55]

And that is a really quick rundown of how I work reverb on the lead vocal.

  • How To Mix & Master Your Music FREE | In Studio Vlog

    21:24

A basic how to tutorial on how to mix and master your vocals, music, beats, and songs for free using Garageband and LANDR. In this in studio music production vlog I give MY OWN personal insight and process on how I mix my songs with the minimum knowledge I have and experience of such as well as the service I use to master my work for both free and VERY cheap. I am no professional engineer by any means so the methods I use and how I explain it in the video may seem a bit elementary but they have worked for me for years with the work I do. Someone requested this video so I decided I would make it. Landr is a great company and program nonetheless. If you get nothing else from this vlog, at least take away that this service is extremely useful to up and coming artists! Take these tips and tricks on vocal mixing for what they're worth! I hope they help.
