Here's our '60s girl group / doo wop style remake of Ellie Goulding's Burn, complete with a saxophone that shoots fire (called the Flame-O-Phone, played by Stefan Zeniuk). Pay special attention to Adam's visibly uncomfortable reaction to seeing 4 foot flames come from the bell of a saxophone, and watch my security deposit go up in flames (both literally and figuratively). Warning: do not play with fire at home! Stefan is a trained professional.

  • Jazz Through the Ages, 1890s to 1960s

    1:4:58

This Jazz Through the Ages concert is the result of over 65 years work by Dr. Lloyd Miller who has attained fluency in all styles of jazz from New Orleans to New Age. Miller, who is a capable performer on nearly all instruments of the various jazz traditions, spent many hours transcribing, arranging and reconstructing these scores. The selections represent landmark bands, artists and standards in jazz styles from the 1890s to the 1960s. The transcriptions/arrangements are the result of many years research and performing experience in each style of jazz and are written to sound improvised because they exactly represent original recordings or are reconstructed from other original performances by key artists.
From 1950-1957 Miller performed with and arranged for various combos in the Los Angeles area and in 1957 traveled through the Far East to Tehran where he began study of Persian music which became the subject his PhD. From 1957-1963, Miller performed and arranged throughout Europe including tours in Sweden and France with performances in Copenhagen, Frankfurt, Geneva, Brussels and in Paris where he gained fame as featured soloist in the Jeff Gilson band. In Paris, Miller sat-in for Bud Powell at the Blue Note and played in all major jazz clubs while studying ethnomusicology with masters Tran Van Khe and Dr. Daryush Safvat. His European performances also included jazz festivals in Comblain-la-tour and Bilzen.
Upon receiving his M.A. at University of Utah in 1970, Miller was awarded a Fulbright scholarship to study in the Middle East and complete his doctoral dissertation on Persian music. In Tehran, Miller had his own weekly, one-hour prime time jazz program on the national television network. During his 7 years residency in Tehran, Miller served as music consultant at the Iran-American society where he presented many jazz concerts. He also served as a music writer in English, Persian and French for most all the local newspapers and magazines including magazines in Beirut and London and later in the US.
Miller’s publications include 25 books; over 100 articles; 7 LP records, some 30 CDs and over a dozen DVDs. Among his awards for arranging and performing include an 1967 Intercollegiate Jazz Festival Best Arranger/Composer; 1968 Intercollegiate Jazz Festival Best Composition; 1969 Intercollegiate Jazz Festival 1st place vocals and the1969 Sounds of Young America National Winner, Best composition.
Miller’ philosophy is why we should we spend a lifetime pushing our own innovations when the work of past masters is still not fully appreciated. So he has put together these carefully transcribed and reconstructed written scores, solos and all, which correctly represent and honor the greats of the past who have offered the world their valuable contribution of jazz music that was eventually to be erased by corporate-created noise. Miller’s Jazz Through the Ages concert is one of the rare efforts honoring former jazz great from the 1890s to the 1960s.

he Kay Musical Instrument Company grew from the Andrew Groehsl Company (or Groehsl Mandolin Company) in Chicago, established in 1890. In 1921, Groehsl's company was purchased by Henry Kay Kuhrmeyer, Frank Voisinet, and Charles Stromberg and renamed to Stromberg-Voisinet. In 1928, with the help of an investor,[12] Kuhrmeyer bought out his partners, renamed the company, and started producing electric guitars and amplifiers. The new company, Kay Musical Instruments was formally established in 1931. As its predecessor had primarily commercialized its products under its own brand as well as a large number of other brands, Kay Musical Instruments would continue that practice.

After the retirement of Kuhrmeyer in 1955, the company was taken over by Sidney M. Katz. The product line of Kay was shifted toward electric musical instruments on demands, and in 1964, the company moved to a new factory in Elk Grove Village, Illinois. In 1965 Katz sold Kay to Seeburg Corporation, and he became the head of Seeburg's musical instrument division. In 1967, Kay was resold and merged with Valco, but dissolved in 1968 due to financial problems.

Lee Konitz (born October 13, 1927) is an American jazz composer and alto saxophonist born in Chicago, Illinois.
Generally considered one of the driving forces of Cool Jazz, Konitz has also performed successfully in bebop and avant-garde settings. Konitz was one of the few altoists to retain a distinctive sound in the 40s, when Charlie Parker exercised a tremendous influence on other players.

Like other students of pianist and theoretician Lennie Tristano, he was noted for improvising long, melodic lines with the rhythmic interest coming from odd accents, or odd note groupings suggestive of the imposition of one time signature over another. Paul Desmond and, especially, Art Pepper were strongly influenced by Konitz.

His association with the Cool Jazz movement of the 1940s and 50s, includes participation in Miles Davis' epochal Birth of the Cool sessions, and his work with Lennie Tristano came from the same period. During his long career, Konitz has played with musicians from a wide variety of jazz styles.

Konitz began his professional career in 1945 with the Teddy Powell band as a replacement for Charlie Ventura. The engagement apparently did not start out smoothly, as Ventura is said to have banged his head against a wall when Konitz played. A month later the band parted ways. Between 1945 and 1947 he worked off and on with Jerry Wald. In 1946 he first met pianist Lennie Tristano and worked in a small cocktail bar with him. His next substantial work was done with Claude Thornhill in 1947, with Gil Evans arranging and Gerry Mulligan as a composer in most part.

In 1949 he teamed up with the Miles Davis group for one or two weeks and again in 1950 to record Birth of the Cool. Konitz has stated that he considered the group to belong to Gerry Mulligan, and credits Lennie Tristano as the true forebearer of the cool. His debut as leader also came in 1949, with the release of Subconscious-Lee on Prestige Records. He also turned down an opportunity to work with Benny Goodman that same year—a decision he is on record as regretting.

In the early 1950s, Konitz recorded and toured with Stan Kenton's orchestra. In 1961, he recorded Motion with Elvin Jones on drums and Sonny Dallas on bass. This spontaneous session, widely regarded as a classic, consisted entirely of standards. The loose trio format aptly featured Konitz's unorthodox phrasing and chromaticism.

Charlie Parker lent him support on the day Konitz's child was being born in Seattle, Washington with him stuck in New York City. The two were actually good friends, and not the rivals some jazz critics once made them out to be.

In 1967, Konitz recorded The Lee Konitz Duets, a series of duets with various musicians. The duo configurations were often unusual for the period (saxophone and trombone, two saxophones). The recordings drew on very nearly the entire history of jazz, from Louis Armstrong's Struttin' With Some Barbecue with valve trombonist Marshall Brown to two completely free duos: one with a Duke Ellington associate, violinist Ray Nance, and one with guitarist Jim Hall.

Konitz has been quite prolific, recording dozens of albums as a band leader. He has also recorded or performed with Dave Brubeck, Ornette Coleman, Charles Mingus, Gerry Mulligan, Elvin Jones and others.

Amongst his latest recordings are a pair of trio dates with Brad Mehldau and Charlie Haden released on Blue Note as well a live album recorded in 2009 at Birdland and released by ECM in 2011 featuring the same lineup with the addition of drummer Paul Motian.

Hope you enjoyed this Lee Konitz Interview
