The period from the end of the First World War until the start of the Depression in 1929 is known as the Jazz Age. Jazz had become popular music in America, although older generations considered the music immoral and threatening to cultural values. Dances such as the Charleston and the Black Bottom were very popular during the period, and jazz bands typically consisted of seven to twelve musicians. Important orchestras in New York were led by Fletcher Henderson, Paul Whiteman and Duke Ellington. Many New Orleans jazzmen had moved to Chicago during the late 1910s in search of employment; among others, the New Orleans Rhythm Kings, King Oliver's Creole Jazz Band and Jelly Roll Morton recorded in the city. However, Chicago's importance as a center of jazz music started to diminish toward the end of the 1920s in favor of New York. In the early years of jazz, record companies were often eager to decide what songs were to be recorded by their artists. Popular numbers in the 1920s were pop hits such as Sweet Georgia Brown, Dinah and Bye Bye Blackbird. The first jazz artist to be given some liberty in choosing his material was Louis Armstrong, whose band helped popularize many of the early standards in the 1920s and 1930s. However, it was not until the 1930s that musicians became comfortable with the harmonic and melodic sophistication of Broadway tunes and started including them regularly in their repertoire. In 1930s swing jazz emerged as a dominant form in American music, in which some virtuoso soloists became as famous as the band leaders. Key figures in developing the big jazz band included bandleaders and arrangers Count Basie, Cab Calloway, Jimmy and Tommy Dorsey, Duke Ellington, Benny Goodman, Fletcher Henderson, Earl Hines, Glenn Miller, and Artie Shaw.

In retrospect, the swing era seems to have been marked by a kind of musical hedonism. The excitement generated by big bands, the exotic dance hall environments in which they worked, the vivid publicity which they earned, all contributed to the idea that non-stop enjoyment was not only desirable but inevitable. Swing numbers were usually up-tempo, the dancers busily jitterbugging, the bandsmen sometimes outlandish, their road stories helping to sustain the music’s glamorous aura.
Much of this (if not all) is true, of course. Swing-style jazz flourished in America and Europe in the immediate post-depression period, building in popularity as the Second World War loomed so who can blame the fans for their desire to shut out oncoming difficulties? They wanted entertainment and pleasure, and loved the animation and vitality of the best swing bands. For all that, the famous orchestras or instrumentalists of the day knew full well that a diet of non-stop flag-wavers could pall and paced their presentations with slower ballads and blues, often featuring a key soloist who might create a lush version of a show song. Of course, this allowed dancers to smooch, to linger romantically, before the programme changed.
It’s this facet of swing – its ‘laid-back’ aspect in modern parlance – which we celebrate here. Tempos are slower and some smaller groups are given their head, the individual players better able to demonstrate their virtuosity and control. The music still swings, but there’s subtlety and sophistication in these performances as well.

  • Aint Misbehavin | The Lady Gatsby Jazz Band | 1920s jazz band to hire

    2:49

Introducing Down for the Count's Lady Gatsby Jazz Band performing Ain't Misbehavin'.

If you are looking for a jazz ensemble to hire for your Great Gatsby, vintage or speakeasy themed event, then The Lady Gatsby Jazz Band is perfect for you! The band is a 1920s themed jazz quintet consisting of female vocals, piano, upright bass, trumpet and clarinet. Putting on a larger event? No problem, we can add drums to the line up.

The Lady Gatsby Jazz Band can be hired on its own for your wedding reception or corporate event, and as part of a wedding reception music package including our ceremony musicians and larger function bands. The band brings back the style and glamour of the Roaring Twenties with well-known classics such as Puttin’ on the Ritz, Happy Feet and Ain’t Misbehavin’.

The band can also perform vintage covers of modern songs in the style of Postmodern Jukebox - fancy hearing Crazy in Love as a Charleston?!

Whether you are styling your wedding or event with a Prohibition or Flapper era theme, the Lady Gatsby Jazz Band will provide the ideal entertainment, all with a touch of class.

The Cotton Club was a New York City night club located first in the Harlem neighborhood on 142nd Street and Lenox Avenue from 1923 to 1935, and then for a brief period (1936-1940) in the midtown Theater District. The club operated most notably during America's Prohibition Era. The club was a whites-only establishment even though it featured many of the most popular black entertainers of the era, including musicians Cab Calloway, Fletcher Henderson, Duke Ellington, Jimmie Lunceford, Chick Webb, Louis Armstrong, Count Basie, Fats Waller, Willie Bryant, vocalists Adelaide Hall, Ethel Waters, and many more.

What is it about the blues? How can one explain the potency of this apparently simple musical form? A key factor in jazz, the blues gene also zigzags through rock and soul, and is a significant influence on country ‘n’ western and reggae, too. Certainly, jazz musicians have no doubt of the continuing efficacy of the blues form, with successive generations of jazzmen obtaining creative sustenance from the time-honoured 12-bar structure. They love the tone qualities and timbre peculiar to blues expression.

One who makes ample use of the blues in his new compositions is prominent trumpeter Wynton Marsalis, who often reminds us that Duke Ellington, too, was a man who never lost his affinity for the blues. As if to illustrate this, there’s a story credited to the late Basie band vocalist Joe Williams. “If ever Duke came into a club,” he said, “you just waited ‘til he stood up to go, put his coat on and got to the door, and then you started to sing a blues. Duke would just turn around and he’d be back at his table straight away.”

  • Puttin On The Ritz | The Lady Gatsby Jazz Band | 1920s jazz band to hire

    2:38

Introducing Down for the Count's Lady Gatsby Jazz Band performing Puttin' On The Ritz.

  • 1920s Chicago Jazz: Jimmie Noones Apex Club Orch. - I Know That You Know

    3:05

Jimmie Noone's Apex Club Orchestra (Jimmie Noone, clarinet; Joe Poston alto sax; Earl Hines, piano; Buddy Scott, banjo; Johnny Wells, drums) -- I Know That You Know (V.Youmans /A.Caldwell), Brunswick 1937 (Originally recorded by Vocalion, 1928)

NOTE: Jimmie NOONE (b.1895 Cut Off, Louisiana -- d. 1944 in LA, California) American jazz clarinetist who is regarded as one of the greatest jazz clarinetists, along with Johnny Dodds, Benny Goodman and Sidney Bechet. Noone's playing is lyrical and sophisticated, and certainly makes more use of sweet flavoring. Noone was an important influence on later clarinetists such as Artie Shaw and Benny Goodman.
He started playing guitar in his home town and at the age of 15, he switched to the clarinet and moved to New Orleans. He studied with Lorenzo Tio and with the young Sidney Bechet, who was only 13 at the time. By 1912, he was playing professionally with Kid Ory, Papa Celestin, the Eagle Band before joining the Original Creole Orchestra in Chicago in 1917. The following year, he joined King Oliver's Creole Jazz Band, then in 1926, he started leading the band at Chicago's Apex Club, the Jimmie Noone's Apex Club Orchestra, in which the influential pianist Earl Hines was playing for a time. In 1943 he moved to Los Angeles, where he died suddenly of a heart attack. The Kid Ory's band played for him the blues titled Blues for Jimmie on the radio, and the number eventually became a regular feature for the Ory band.

  • Early Jazz 1920s: Paul Whiteman - Georgia, 1922

    3:14

Paul Whiteman and His Orchestra -- Georgia, Fox-trot (W. Donaldson), Victor 1922 (USA; accoustic recording)

NOTE: There's one thing, I can do at any time of night or day: it's listening to Paul Whiteman's accousticals from early 1920s. It was, ofcourse, first of all Whiteman's genius, but also the freshness and energy of the youth, that made those recordings so dymanic and so inventive in all their arrangement and fantastic orchestration. Fox-trot Georgia -- little known despite the fact, it was Walter Donaldson's composition - is no exception here. I like every second of this tune and to make it really remarkable and remembered by you, I ransacked my archives to complete -- instead of one more array of all those coquettishly smiling flappers -- some more unusal collection of photos of the sound transmitters from early 1920s.

  • Jazz in Berlin 1920s: Efim Schachmeister - Yes, We Have No Bananas! 1923

    3:30

Tanz-Orchester „Schachmeister” (Efim Schachmeister’s Dance Band) – Yes, We Have No Bananas! [Ausgerechnet Bananen] Shimmy (Silver-Cohn), Schallplatte Grammophon 1923 (Germany)

NOTE: One of the most popular German dance bands during the Weimar Republic (ex aequo with Dajos Bela, Paul Godwin, Marek Weber, Julian Fuhs or Ilja Livshakoff’s dance orchestras) plays the international hit and one of the musical icons of the early 1920s.
Efim (Chaim) Schachmeister (b. 1894 in Kiev, Russian Empire – d. 1944 in Argentine) was a violinist and a jazz-dance bandleader of a Russian/Jewish origin. About 1912 he traveled to Berlin where he completed education at the renowned Stern Conservatory and in 1915 he joined the popular Popescu Gypsy Band (Zigeuner-Kapelle Popescu) which was led by the Russian-Romanian-Jewish violinist Dajos Bela, his compatriot from Ukraine. In 1923 Efim became a leader of his own band with which he toured in Germany, until in 1925 he got engagement at the Hotel Excelsior in Berlin. This was followed by engagements at top Berlin dancehalls such as the Barberina, the Palais de Danse, and the Pavillon Mascotte. In this period he signed with Deutsche Grammophon, which billed him as the King of all Dance-Violinists, although Efim Schachmeister’s style evolved over the course of the 1920s from simple one-steps or ragtime to the more modern jazz. He himself played the violin, characteristically in a gypsy-manner, but was also capable of adjusting his style to a more Blues-influenced technique and the shtetl style. After 1933 Schachmeister emigrated from the nazi-Germany first to Belgium, but later settled in Argentina where he met his friend Dajos Bela and continued playing in a dance orchestra, until his death in 1944, aged fifty.
