    * great new videos, giveaways and more at !

    *

This beginning rhythm guitar video teaches The Shuffle Pattern. Guitarists substitute this rhythm guitar technique if strumming open-position major chords like E, A, and D sounds too jangly, boomy and big. Blues and blues-related guitar styles employ The Shuffle Pattern frequently. Come Together by The Beatles is a great example of the D shuffle and the A Shuffle. There are lots of creative variations on the basic pattern taught here. Take it slow and enjoy the learning process ! You can do it !

One way to create interest for your listener is to repeat a key phrase. In the blues you can often turn that into an entire 12 bar blues solo. This is great for capturing the listener’s attention, but also it can be a good way to get a welcome break if you have to solo over several choruses or if you’re trading solos with a sax or keyboard player. Plus, you only really need one idea for the whole solo!

  • Dirty Rake Guitar Rhythm | Texas Shuffle | Techniques for Beginning

    8:29

Dirty Rake Guitar Rhythm | Texas Blue Shuffle | Techniques for Beginning

Stevie Ray Vaughan was the king of this style of rhythm. It sounds great and it sounds easy, but it’s not at all! Everybody seems to have a slightly different approach, but a couple of things are certain.
    1. You need to 100% nail the syncopated train rhythm
    2. You need to mute the strings either with your left or right hand – or both
    3. You need to somewhat aggressively hit the notes with your left hand

And most important of all, if you break the rhythm for any reason – playing a lick for example – you need to go right back into it as soon as you can.

I’m still learning this technique, and I thought I’d pass on some things I’ve found helpful. Good luck and have fun!

  • SHUFFLE in G - Video #2 - picking exercises

    7:21

NOTES FOR “SHUFFLE in G” VIDEO 2:
The emphasis with this 2nd video on the Shuffle will be on “picking”.

Once you can play the basic pattern comfortably (see video #1) try these different picking exercises:

    1. Use down strokes only: consecutive down strokes can be challenging because they force us to move the pick quickly from one note to another—without the help of the alternate picking motion.
To make the exercise even more challenging, I also show you how to play the Shuffle using 3 notes per beat, using 8th note triplets. Since there are 12 notes within a measure, we are indeed playing all the subdivisions of a 12/8 meter.

    2. Use up strokes only: same exercises as above, but now with up strokes...

Those picking exercises can be counter-intuitive, but they are well-worth the effort. Practicing picking in one-direction-only will eventually improve your alternate picking down the road.

I find that the Shuffle makes an interesting and short study that is way more fun that just playing scales or arpeggios!

As usual, work with the metronome, and start very, very slowly.

Sick of those same old blues rhythm guitar shuffles and barre chords? Kick your blues rhythm chops up a notch with this blues rhythm lesson and discover how to use chord fragments, ninth chords and rhythm riffs in your rhythm guitar style.

Blues Rhythm Chops Ex 1: Chord Fragments

Chord Fragments are fragments of larger chords and they are powerful blues rhythm guitar tools. See this example to learn how to use them straight away in your playing.

Blues Rhythm Chops Ex 2: 9th Chords

9th chords can act as substitutes for Dominant 7 chords, so instead of playing A7 in your 12 bar blues, you could play A9 instead. This adds much more colour to the 12 bar blues (and makes you sound like a way slicker player!)

Blues Rhythm Chops Ex 3: Blues Bassline Riffs

Why not ditch chords all together...and play a blues bassline riff instead! Here's one example of a blues bassline riff you can use. Try out some riff variations of your own remember.

Have fun spicing up your blues rhythm chops with this lesson and see you next time!

I'd love to be your online guitar teacher!

    ---

Now that we’ve learned about straight rhythms and syncopated rhythms, it’s time to add one more rhythmic concept: triplets and “the shuffle.”

Triplets are 3 beats that fit equally in one beat, or one beat divided by three. This is a significantly different sound than eighth notes, which as you remember are two beats in one.

    You count these beats Tri-Pel-let

Try counting these with your hands on your knees, and then on your guitar. It’s a lot of fun and it will open up tremendous rhythmic possibilities.

A great example of using triplets as a rhythmic base is “the shuffle,” common in blues.

The shuffle is a triplet without the middle note (pel in tri-pel-let).

Try playing triplets not only with chords, but in scales as well. It’s a great way to add more character to your lead playing, so practice your scales with a metronome but vary between triplets and eighth / quarter notes.

    Good luck!

This is the first guitar lesson in a series of videos where we’ll be showing y’all how to make your rhythm guitar sound country with hybrid picking. In this lesson, I’ll teach you a really useful hybrid picking pattern that can be applied to a ton of different country songs. This pattern will help get you comfortable using your pick in combination with the middle and ring fingers of your right hand. As we progress through this course, we’ll increase the hybrid picking difficulty and we’ll take a look at several different patterns that sound great in country, bluegrass, and folk music.

Visit to learn common bluegrass flatpicking guitar licks to use at your next bluegrass jam. All licks come with tablature and you can use them with several different bluegrass songs. These flatpicking licks can be used to improvise over bluegrass songs like Man of Constant Sorrow, Wildwood Flower, Red Haired Boy, Salt Creek, Gold Rush, Cripple Creek, Cherokee Shuffle, etc.

This is a 12 Bar Blues in the Key of E. Joshs Rhythm part employs a steady pulse bass line and some cool B3 inspired chord motion. If you look closely, youll find that the upper voices are simply a harmonization of the common Boogie Woogie melody (5-6-b7). The Mixolydian Scale is used to generate a 2nd and 3rd Harmony (3-4-5 & b7-1-2). As with the Slow Blues, this rhythm part can be stripped down to just chords if you are playing with a bass player.

Who doesn’t like a good blues chord progression? And who woulda thought that you could play the 12 bar blues ALL DAY LONG with just ONE ultra simple chord shape?!

Today we’re taking a look at how the pros like to play the blues, which is much simpler than you might think! It’s not always about playing complex blues guitar chords.

In fact, it involves much more “stripped down” versions of blues guitar chords when playing the 12 bar blues. So stripped down, in fact, that you’ll be playing just ONE chord shape the whole way through!

I’ll explain and break down these blues guitar chords and how you can pull them off just by using this one simple shape. Then we’ll talk about how to apply it in a 12 bar blues context.

This will not only simplify the way that you play the blues, but it’ll also show your fellow musician buddies that you know how to sit in a band mix like a PRO!

  • How to Play a Shuffle Rhythm - Acoustic Guitar Lesson on Blues Shuffle

    4:30

Rhythmic patterns are an essential part of playing guitar. The more you know, the better prepared you will be for all sorts of musical situations, whether it be writing, improvising, or just practicing your skills on the instrument. In this lesson, Robert gives you an acoustic rhythm lesson that can actually be applied just as easily to an electric guitar or even a bass guitar. Here Robert shows you a great shuffle that can be used in more than one musical context or genre. The shuffle would work particularly well in a blues or country setting. Robert breaks down the notes used in his demonstration (though it could easily be transposed into other keys), and he shows you the fingering he uses, which is important to help with the fluidity. He uses an alternate picking pattern here, also important, because it helps establish a solid rhythmic feel. This is a fun, extremely easy shuffle, so try recording it and doing some solo work over it. Robert also talks a bit about dynamics (an important element in creating different musical feels and sound) and shows you how applying different dynamics on this basic shuffle pattern can help add color and texture. This is an excellent way to strengthen your fingers and develop fluidity in your playing,an excellent way to learn your scales, and great way to learn a killer boogie rhythm you can use in a variety of ways. Grab your guitar and give it a try.
