  • Cellar Sessions: Seth Glier - Water On Fire June 26th, 2017 City Winery New York

    4:18

Seth Glier sits down for a One On One Session at City Winery New York on June 26th, 2017. Watch the full session here: For more info visit: Audio & Video by: Ehud Lazin

    Setlist:
    Birds
    I'm Still Looking
    Water On Fire

Seth Glier’s new album Birds is steeped in conflict and contradictions. There’s grief and loss, but also strength and resilience; doubt and dismay, but also a sense of optimism as Glier confronts heavy topics and wrestles them into the daylight.

Glier (pronounced “Gleer”) recorded Birds in an airy loft in western Massachusetts outfitted with a grand piano and floor-to-ceiling windows. Birds roost just outside those windows, on the roof of the converted mill building where he lives, and they became his sympathetic audience while Glier made the album. “I felt a tremendous amount of comfort talking to the Birds,” he says “I’d check in with them regularly to see how they thought things were going so far.”

Birds is Glier’s fifth album, and the latest entry in a burgeoning career that has included a Grammy nomination and a pair of Independent Music Awards while touring with artists including Ani DiFranco and Ryan Adams.

The songs on Birds range from personal to political, and are bound together by the awareness that our world is a fragile place that is all the more magical for it. Glier makes that point on a large scale with “Water on Fire,” a terse, grinding tune that opens with a cynical reworking of a Ray Charles lyric as Glier uses fracking to dig into the false equivalence between freedom and capitalism. “Hasn’t Hit Me Yet” has a more visceral, intimate approach: the soulful slow jam, full of warm guitars and multi-tracked vocals, is about the death of Glier’s autistic brother.

Together, those songs represent the opposite poles of Birds. “I was really trying to explore connections on this record,” Glier says. Among those connections is the one between race and the criminal justice system on “Justice for All,” a raw chain-gang stomp that sounds almost like an old field recording. “Like I Do” takes a more oblique tack, drawing out feelings of anger through the use of noisy synthesizers and fuzzed-out bass pads.

The songs on Birds reflect a scope of sound and style: the title track is lush and & orchestral, for example, while “Too Much Water” pairs Glier’s voice and piano with subtle accompaniment from horns, for a classic, elegant feel that calls to mind Harry Nilsson in the early ’70s. “People Like Us” is jaunty and up-tempo, while the trebly guitar arpeggios and moaning saxophone on “Just Because I Can” sound like a sock-hop slow dance, until you zero in on lyrics delivered by a narrator who dynamites his domestic bliss simply for the power trip. Conflict. Contradiction.

Even the cover tune, a reimagined version of Buffalo Springfield’s “For What It’s Worth,” evokes urgency. “Although it was written 50 years ago, it’s still about what’s happening right now,” Glier says.

Birds began taking shape after Glier lost his brother, Jamie, who died in October 2015, and inspired a TED Talk performance that Glier gave in 2016. “My brother passing away was a huge component of where I was and what I was looking for,” Glier says. “In particular, I was looking for meanings, wanting his life to mean more than just being over.”

For a long time afterward, Glier passed the time by writing songs and inspecting each melody with the feathered fellows by his windowsill. Instead of recording the album in a Los Angeles studio, as he did on his 2015 album If I Could Change One Thing, he decided to make Birds at home.

“I thought that I should just stay close to the windows here,” Glier says. “I think this sort of happened by accident, but by the time I started recording the record, it was fall in New England, which is a profoundly beautiful death. The air is full of honesty, the sky is full of geese, and there is bright gorgeousness woven into the dying of things. It all seeped into the textures of this record.”

  • Elton John - Mona Lisas and Mad Hatters Part 2 With Lyrics!

    4:16

From Elton John's 1988 album Reg Strikes Back, this was a follow-up to the song Mona Lisas and Mad Hatters which Elton John & Bernie Taupin had released on the 1972 album #Honky Chateau. In contrast to the first song, which is, although beautiful, a bit of a dark and cold response to the harshness of New Yrok City, this time Taupin's lyrics are more positive as they seem to give the city a second chance. Elton composed jazzy music to Part Two and said, That's probably my favorite track on the album. It just has a great New York feel. Freddie Hubbard played the trumpet solo. For several years in concerts Elton and his band performed an extended, improvisational rendition of the two songs together.

    Mark Isaacs (b1958)
    Chamber Symphony (World Premiere)

    I. Intrada – Larghetto ben cantando – Doppio movimento (tempo di valse)
II. Berceuse – Moderato teneramente – Allegretto piangendo
III. Fantaisie – Allegro vivace ben ritmico

The Chamber Symphony, by Australian composer Mark Isaacs, is a study in concision. It is shorter in length than a traditional symphony – being only 16 minutes long, smaller in size – using 13 performers rather than an orchestra, and abbreviates the traditional symphonic form.
In the work’s opening bars a gently pulsing accompaniment gives rise to the first movement’s main theme, a lilting melody that first marks out its home territory before venturing further and further afield. The strings then take the lead in a short canonic conversation before the flute and clarinet introduce a second related theme.
After developing the material the Chamber Symphony returns to the introductory accompaniment, but rather than restating the movement’s main musical subjects as in traditional sonata form, the music moves immediately into a Berceuse (cradle song). Here, the melody is infused with flavours from the work’s opening theme, but it is set against lush harmonies that betray the composer’s jazz training. As the composer writes, “I happily stand on the shoulders of what I have learned from the giants of classical composition, but when my jazz experience pokes through in some way, I don’t resist it.” After a short instrumental primer, the addition of a soprano voice – singing with no words – adds warmth to this engaging lullaby.
It is in the jaunty final movement that the jazz and classical sound worlds of the composer’s musical background achieve their most equal marriage. Here, the gentle pulsing with which the work commenced is resurrected as a vibrant rhythmic accessory, while the exposed melodic riffs soon give way to the previously absent recapitulation of the work’s opening theme.
Mark Isaacs was commissioned to write Chamber Symphony by Harry and Julie Johnson, avid music-lovers and concertgoers. Following a discussion with Omega Ensemble’s Artistic Director David Rowden, it was agreed that this concert, featuring soprano Jane Sheldon, would be the ideal setting for the work’s world premiere.

    Mark Isaacs -

Hailed as “a splendid musical mind” by the Los Angeles Times, Mark Isaacs has achieved widespread recognition as a composer and pianist working in both classical music and jazz.

Mark has composed more than 100 major works, many commissioned by Australia’s most prestigious ensembles, orchestras and soloists. His music has received numerous awards and accolades, including the inaugural Miriam Hyde Composer-Pianist Award, the 2007 Albert H. Maggs Composition Award, and the 2012 Jean Bogan Prize for Piano Composition. Isaacs has also been a prize winner in the Tokyo International Competition for Chamber Music Composition, and was a finalist in the 2013 Paul Lowin Orchestral Prize.

As a jazz pianist Mark has toured extensively, performing at major festivals including the Tokyo Jazz Festival and Pori Jazz, Finland. He has collaborated with some of the most distinguished figures in international jazz including Dave Holland, Roy Haynes, Kenny Wheeler, Adam Nussbaum, Vinnie Colaiuta and Bob Sheppard, and has released many internationally acclaimed CDs.

Isaacs has twice been nominated for an ARIA Award for Best Jazz Album and his composition Walk a Golden Mile received the award for Instrumental Work of the Year at the APRA/Australian Classical Music Awards. In 2010 & 2011 he was nominated for several Bell Jazz Awards and for Best Independent Jazz Album at the Jägermeister Independent Music Awards.

Mark’s first symphony, commissioned by former media executive Kim Williams AM, was premiered by the Queensland Symphony Orchestra in 2013, and the TV program of the premiere – which Mark co-produced – has been screened on Foxtel in Australia and Sky TV in New Zealand. In 2012, Mark premiered his solo piano cycle Children’s Songs at the Adelaide Festival and recorded it for international release on the New York label Soundbrush Records. Mark holds a Master of Music degree in classical composition and piano performance from the Eastman School of Music, New York.

In 2012 the ensamble welcomed the new conductor – Matija Tavčar, a young and promising local percussionist who has been a member of the orchestra since its very beginning. The Komen Wind Orchestra follows his new vision of music, which will take the young enthusiastic musicians again all over the world.

In 2015 the Komen Wind Orchestra won the first prize and Grand Prix at the International Youth Music Festival in Bratislava.

  • Musique Automatique : Marl generative ambient music w/ Digitakt

    6:27

Here is another droney ambient soundscape, but this time all sounds were sampled from the 0-Coast. It kinda makes me crave an analog polysynth, but I guess a sampler will do for now! (Patch note below, also there's a link to download the 0-Coast samples if anyone's interested)

This track is very similar to my previous one Chalk and I suggest you take a look at its description if you want more details, but here is the core idea : I have long samples of each notes from the scale I chose (repeated over 4 octaves) and each audio track is playing one of them randomly now and then. This is done with the MIDI loopback, MIDI tracks are constantly changing the Sample Slot of the audio tracks. That's why you can see the waveform changing on the screen (looks cool right?). Audio tracks have Conditional Trigs everywhere so the rhythm is random too.

The samples are 15-second notes from my 0-Coast (C2 to B5). While recording them I was slowly tweaking knobs to get some variation in timbre and brightness. I also added 1-second fade-in and fade-out to avoid any abrupt cut during the piece. Anyway, the pack is available here :

I also experimented with a new feature that came with the latest Digitakt OS update. You can now cut an audio track from the main out while still sending it to the FX. This way you can get 100% wet reverb sounds (which I think you couldn't before?). Very cool to have super washed-out drones and stuff.

What you hear is the Digitakt output going through Ozone 5 and L3 Ultramaximizer for mastering. I also edited a little click away and added the fade-out in the DAW. No FX added.

I hope you guys will enjoy this one. These are quiet and very still so I guess they can get boring real quick. But working on something like this is sooo relaxing. Also this time I left a little more room for dissonance and I feel like it helps giving more dynamic to the track. The cycle between harmonic tension and release helps a little. Anyway, thank you for watching, peace,

    Aldo

Hansenhaus performing at the University of Georgia Performing Arts Center February 6, 2009

I had limited sound sources to work with when putting the video together from this show. Basically it was a stereo mixing board mix where the bass tends to be too loud at times and the guitar was consistently low in the mix. I tried hard to control this using multi-band compression but the results varied a bit from song to song.

Like all of the public-facing arts, we are challenged to serve our community beyond the reach of this pandemic and its wake of cancelled performances, shutdown of gathering places, and restrictions on travel.

In responding to this crisis and the new world we now find ourselves inhabiting, Jazz at Lincoln Center's annual Spring Gala on April 15th will now be freely broadcast digitally to audiences around the world on this page, as well as on Youtube and Facebook.

Culture-defining artists from Japan, Brazil, Russia, Pakistan, South Africa, Germany, Belgium, Spain, Italy, and the United States will join the Jazz at Lincoln Center Orchestra with Wynton Marsalis for a “first of its kind” high-quality global experience.

This concert will bring us all together to uplift and encourage us with the wisdom and insights of major artists who have represented and elevated their respective cultures for decades. Each will play the song that made them fall in love with jazz, and we are sure it will lift us from the isolation of this moment to the collective memory of a greater future.

We ask you to support this concert with a donation as you are able. Our entire ecosystem has sustained devastating losses, but this concert is a very important way to stay alive and sustain our ability to fulfill and further our mission. The hundreds of artists that perform in Rose Theater, The Appel Room, Dizzy's Club and our dedicated JALC staff humbly thank you for your consideration and your generosity in this trying time for all.

    About our Honorees:

We are proud to present the Ed Bradley Award for Leadership in Jazz to Jazz at Lincoln Center Board Member Clarence Otis and Jacqueline L. Bradley, who are leaders in both business and philanthropy. Clarence and Jacqueline have been staunch supporters of JALC and our youth education programs, particularly Let Freedom Swing, that bring live jazz and lessons in democracy to low-income students, and Clarence has served in a number of leadership capacities, including his current role as chair of JALC’s Finance Committee. Clarence also sits on the boards of Verizon and VF Corporation.

We could not be more excited to present this year’s Jazz at Lincoln Center Award for Artistic Excellence to Jazz at Lincoln Center's own Phil Schaap, a true inspiration to all of us working to keep jazz alive. Through a career of broadcasting jazz on the radio for over 44 years, winning him Grammy Awards for Historical Writing, Producing, and Audio Engineering, Schaap is one of our most passionate and dedicated scholars and a staple in the world of jazz preservation.

Proceeds from this evening help make possible the thousands of unique performances, education programs, and resources produced annually by Jazz at Lincoln Center, which reach more than two million people all over the world.

  • Lift Every Voice and Sing - We Are The Future Big Band

    8:23

Lift Every Voice and Sing was originally written as a poem by James Weldon Johnson and later set to music by his brother John Rosamond Johnson.

Lift Ev'ry Voice - considered the Black National Anthem - is a masterpiece born out of the Black experience and has served as a beacon of hope, perseverance, and strength for those disenfranchised folks over the last 100+ years. As we face challenging times in our world, we turn to this hymn to direct our path and re-galvanize our efforts in creating a better place where each of us have our full humanity.

This version is based on Lawrence Larry Watson's arrangement that was first featured for Nelson Mandela in 1990 during his historic visit to Boston after he was released from prison. This song is sacred, powerful, and doused in the blood, sweat, and tears of those who have paved the way. We hope some of the power ignites in each of you.

    Lyrics:
    Lift every voice and sing
    Till earth and
    Heaven ring
    Ring with the harmonies of
    Liberty;
    Let our rejoicing rise,
    High as
The list'ning skies, let it resound loud as the
    Rolling sea
Sing a song full of the faith that the
    Dark past has taught us,
    Sing a song full of
The hope that the present has brought
    Us;
Facing the rising sun of our new day
    Begun,
Let us march on till victory is
    Won.

    Stony the road we trod,
    Bitter the
    Chast'ning rod,
Felt in the day that hope
    Unborn had died;
    Yet with a steady
    Beat,
    Have not our weary feet,
    Come to the
Place on which our fathers sighed?
    We have
Come over a way that with tears has been
    Watered,
We have come, treading our path
Through the blood of the slaughtered,
    Out from
The gloomy past, till now we stand at
    Last
Where the white gleam of our star is
    Cast.

    God of our weary years,
    God of
    Our silent tears,
Thou who has brought us thus
    Far on the way;
    Thou who has by thy
    Might,
    Led us into the light,
    Keep us
Forever in the path, we pray
    Lest our feet
Stray from the places, our God, where we met
    Thee,
Least our hearts, drunk with the wine of
    The world, we forget thee,
    Shadowed beneath the
    Hand,
    May we forever stand,
    Tru to our
    God,
    Tru to our native land

    More info at:

B.B. King is the greatest living exponent of the blues and considered by many to be the most influential guitarist of the latter part of the 20th century. His career dates back to the late forties and despite now being in his eighties he remains a vibrant and charismatic live performer. B.B. King has been a frequent visitor to the Montreux festival, appearing nearly 20 times, so choosing one performance was no easy task. This 1993 concert will surely rank as one of his finest at any venue. With a superb backing band and a great set list its a must for any blues fan.

    The thrill is gone
    The thrill is gone away
    The thrill is gone baby
    The thrill is gone away
You know you done me wrong baby
    And you'll be sorry someday

    The thrill is gone
    It's gone away from me
    The thrill is gone baby
The thrill is gone away from me
    Although, I'll still live on
    But so lonely I'll be

    The thrill is gone
    It's gone away for good
    The thrill is gone baby
    It's gone away for good
Someday I know I'll be open armed baby
Just like I know a good man should

You know I'm free, free now baby
    I'm free from your spell
Oh I'm free, free, free now
    I'm free from your spell
And now that it's all over
All I can do is wish you well

    3:31

Юбилейный концерт Сергея Чипенко в клубе Дуров. Москва.
    Sir Duke. Stevie Wonder
Music is a world within itself
With a language we all understand
    With an equal opportunity
For all to sing, dance and clap their hands

But just because a record has a groove
Don't make it in the groove
But you can tell right away at letter A
When the people start to move

They can feel it all over
They can feel it all over people
They can feel it all over
They can feel it all over people

Music knows it is and always will
Be one of the things that life just won't quit
But there are some of music's pioneers
That time will not allow us to forget

    For there's Basie, Miller, Sachimo
And the king of all Sir Duke
And with a voice like Ella's ringing out
There's no way the band can lose

You can feel it all over
You can feel it all over people
You can feel it all over
You can feel it all over people

Ella Fitzgerald - All the Best (FULL ALBUM)
    Download on Google Play:

Ella Jane Fitzgerald (April 25, 1917 äóñ June 15, 1996) was an American jazz singer often referred to as the First Lady of Song, Queen of Jazz and Lady Ella. She was noted for her purity of tone, impeccable diction, phrasing and intonation, and a horn-like improvisational ability, particularly in her scat singing. After tumultuous teenage years, Fitzgerald found stability in musical success with the Chick Webb Orchestra, performing across the country, but most often associated with the Savoy Ballroom in Harlem. Fitzgerald's rendition of the nursery rhyme A-Tisket, A-Tasket helped boost both her and Webb to national fame. Taking over the band after Webb died, Fitzgerald left it behind in 1942 to start a solo career that would last effectively the rest of her life. Signed with manager and Savoy co-founder Moe Gale from early in her career, she eventually gave managerial control for her performance and recording career to Norman Granz, who built up the label Verve Records based in part on Fitzgerald's vocal abilities. With Verve she recorded some of her more widely noted works, particularly her interpretation of the Great American Songbook. While Fitzgerald appeared in movies and as a guest on popular television shows in the second half of the twentieth century, her musical collaborations with Louis Armstrong, Duke Ellington, and The Ink Spots were some of her most notable acts outside of her solo career. These partnerships produced recognizable songs like Dream a Little Dream of Me, Cheek to Cheek, Into Each Life Some Rain Must Fall, and It Don't Mean a Thing (If It Ain't Got That Swing). In 1993, Fitzgerald capped off her sixty-year career with her last public performance. Three years later, she died at the age of 79, following years of decline in her health.
