Interior Design — How To Design A Sophisticated, Family-Friendly Home

    3:32

Designer Ines Mazzotta proves that a family home can be both sophisticated and functional for raising young children. See how she designed a stylish home that showcases elegant finishes and glam accessories alongside fun-yet-practical furnishings for little ones.

Comfort and style were the two mandates for the homeowners so Ines created zones: the family-friendly rooms use stain-resistant fabrics and kid-friendly furnishings while the “adult” spaces are decked out in more luxe pieces, including the couple’s treasured possessions, like vintage Persian rugs. Ines kept the family room casual and designed it to host a larger group with a custom L-shaped sectional, as well as stools and chairs. The sitting room, on the other hand, was kept more formal for intimate settings with a mix of velvet and silk fabrics, warm metals and glass accents. Upstairs, the boy’s bedroom has a safari-meets-aviation theme, while the little girl’s room is styled with pops of silver, gold and pink.

Interior Design – You Won’t Believe This Home Is Only 1,100-Square-Feet!

    4:36

See inside designer Cameron MacNeil‘s small yet spacious 1930s home. Discover how he created a bright and airy space by making the most of every square foot.

Cameron stuck to a palette of blues and greys throughout the home, inspired by his bathroom renovation. He maximized space in the layout by swapping the location of the living room and the kitchen. Smart storage and furniture choices make the 10′ x 12′ bedroom feel larger than it is, while original wood trim and doors add a rustic feel. A headboard wrapped in a bold ikat print by Schumacher adds a pop of pattern. The all-white kitchen, though small, is extremely functional with heavy-duty storage, like ceiling-height cabinetry and a small pantry next to the refrigerator. In the living room, large french doors stream natural light, while minimal furnishings allow a large gallery wall around the TV to steal the show.

Interior Design — Cool & Colorful Toronto Loft Makeover

    3:50

Designers Kate Thornley-Hall and Natalie Herbert share how they transformed food photographer and filmmaker Edward Pond’s cavernous studio into a warm and welcoming home.

To give the open-concept space a more residential look, Kate and Natalie added walls to create zones. In the kitchen, they replaced some of the existing cabinets with a vintage storage cabinet, brought in an island and changed the backsplash. The dining area boasts a vintage dining table topped with three light fixtures that emphasize the 14-foot ceilings. A sectional provides ample seating in the living room, while a magenta chair plays off the navy walls and rug. To hide the dated industrial radiator, the designers created a custom counter with shelving to fit the modern aesthetic of the space.

Interior Design – A Family-Friendly Home Influenced By Scandinavian Design

Designer Gillian Lazanik of Affecting Spaces shares her own home makeover that’s not only functional for her family of four, but reflects their personality. See how she created a bright and open space with Scandinavian design influences, playful touches of color and a clean and minimal aesthetic.

To create a child-proof space that’s safe for her growing kids, Gillian opted for round tables to avoid sharp edges, durable plastic dining chairs and laminate floors so they wouldn’t get scratched by her dog’s nails. Inspired by Scandinavian design, she kept the palette neutral with pops of black, but brought in color with accessories and art. The family shares one bathroom, so functionality was key. A double sink, sliding doors and a cedar wall keep things spacious and serene.

Interior Design — Small House Traditional Makeover

    2:55

A young couple in their thirties enlists designer Christine Elliott to make their new small house feel more refined and bespoke. See how she brings her clients’ style to this space using traditional pieces and elegant details.

The couple purchased the home to serve as a transitional space until they get a custom build, so a large renovation wasn’t in the cards. Christine used paint to transform the rooms, and brought in pieces the couple can take with them when they move. In the dining room, wall panelling elevates the room and makes the ceiling feel taller. A monochromatic parlor just off the dining room has navy walls and a blue ceiling, creating a cozy spot to enjoy post-dinner cocktails. Christine brightened the kitchen by painting the burgundy cabinets a fresh white, swapping the backsplash and incorporating luxe lighting.

Interior Design – French Country Apartment Decor

Inspired by Scandinavian style, Trudy loves the simplicity of white. To bring warmth to the shade, she relied on different colors of wood, rustic touches, mirrors and crystal details. Exposed brick, layers of texture and French country accents liven up the space, while easy-to-clean fabrics and slipcovers prevent the loft from feeling too precious. Multiple large windows allow plenty of light to flood in, visually expanding the square-footage.

Interior Design — Makeover With Color and Pattern

    4:04

Cheery hues and bold fabrics breathe new life into a 1920s home, thanks to designer William MacDonald. Get his brilliant design tips — including ways to make a room look larger — and learn about his clients’ fearless design sensibility.

Although the home was old, it had great bones. William created two seating areas in the gracious living room to maximize space, and daringly mixed bright colors and prints for personality. Pattern continues into the dining room, where the chairs are upholstered in a graphic blue and white print. In the adjacent garden room, William brought in comfortable seating and a large table to create a casual, multifunctional space. Wainscotting nods to the original architecture in the foyer, while cloud-printed wallpaper offers a modern look in the bedroom.

Interior Design – Tour A Farmhouse-Inspired Family Room & Kitchen

A 17-foot addition solves a young family’s need for more light and space in their recently purchased home. See how designer and art gallery owner Alison Milne added authentic farmhouse charm to the newly built area with vintage accessories and rustic details.

The homeowners wanted a space that functioned for the entire family, where they could be in the kitchen and watch the kids doing their homework or playing. The transitional space offers just that. To achieve a comfortable cottage-like feel that still looked contemporary, Alison incorporated modern accents in addition to vintage decor. She mixed grey shaker cabinets with beadboard panelling in the kitchen, and added mesh detailing for textural interest. Wide plank floors in a natural honey color add to the farmhouse vibe, while old barnwood finishes and painted brick walls provide warmth and richness to the space.

Interior Design – How To Get The Mid-Century Modern Look

    3:02

Designer Samantha Sacks shares the secret to designing an elegant mid-century modern space. See how she mixes colour, pattern and vintage heirloom furniture to liven up a Victorian home.

Samantha chose a geometric mid-century rug with Indian influences as the jumping off point to the rest of the decor. The homeowners had a lot of great mid-century furniture passed down from generations, like an old record table, but it needed some updating. She upholstered those pieces with lighter fabrics and brought in graphic patterned pillows and a fur throw to soften the look. Crisp white walls freshen up the space, while vintage chairs bring just the right amount of warmth to the dining table. The result is a stylish, liveable space with sentimental value that mixes old and new.

Interior Design – A Chef’s Stylish Kitchen With Smart Storage

    4:40

H&H‘s Reiko Caron shares a stunning eat-in kitchen she designed for her friends Biana Zorich and chef Marc Thuet. See how she transformed their small, dated space with the help of AyA Kitchens.

Reiko removed the wall separating the kitchen from the dining area to create one large room. Then, H&H developed a custom hue for the cabinets with AyA Kitchens — a stunning midnight blue. On one wall, Reiko skipped upper cabinets to keep the room airy, while creating ample storage space elsewhere with deep drawers, a pantry and a freestanding cabinet. Patterned tiles add a graphic effect underfoot, while an extendible black dining table lets the family enjoy meals together. Together with chef-approved appliances and durable countertops, the new additions make for a dream kitchen.

Interior Design — A Fresh Take On Urban-Country Style

    2:31

A small kitchen in a Toronto semi gets a major upgrade by designer Olivia Botrie of Dart Studio. Discover how she expanded the space and created a clean country look that speaks to both contemporary and traditional sensibilities.

Olivia added 65 square feet to the narrow room, creating a 250-square-foot kitchen. Custom slab cabinets in a quiet sage color offer smart storage while keeping budget in mind. A rustic wood table brings warmth to the clean, open space, and a banquette provides comfortable seating. One of the homeowners’ asks was to add enough natural light to grow plants, so Olivia chose high transom windows, which work with the modern aesthetic and still allow for privacy.

Interior Design — How To Decorate A 2-Bedroom Condo For Under 10k

    3:56

Discover how designer Natalie Chong furnished a young couple’s two-bedroom, two-bathroom home for $10,000. Get her budget condo decorating ideas for adding style and personality to a space, while creating a gender-neutral design aesthetic.

Natalie kept function and finances top of mind throughout the design process. She painted the bottom half of the wall in the long entryway in a durable dark navy hue as a less expensive (and non-permanent) alternative to wainscotting. In the living room, a rug acts as a room divider between the kitchen and dining area. Despite the small space, Natalie was able to fit a six-person dining table and a pop-up desk in the corner. A black wall in the hotel-like master bedroom offers drama, while mini dressers work as night tables with ample storage. The guest room will be a nursery one day, so Natalie kept the design simple and used affordable pieces that can easily be replaced.

A wall of Shaker-style cabinets, which were painted and sanded down, offer a rustic look and provide additional storage. A little breakfast nook overlooks the backyard and provides a small eat-in area. In the adjacent living room, concrete walls add coziness, while exposed ceilings create a loft-like feel. The dining room, which can be seen when you enter the home, boasts exposed brick, concrete floors and an ornate screen that plays with natural light.

Designer Alexandre Blazys shares a small condo in Montreal with incredible architectural millwork, warm wood details and a color palette inspired by nature. See how he created an ultra-functional living space in this one-bedroom home with smart storage and a mix of woods.

Alexandre was inspired by the colors of fall so red, orange and blue translates into a modernist vibe created in the open living area. The dining set on the other hand is kept fresh and light, and really pops in the warm-toned space. Spanning the entire width of the room, the back wall has built-in storage behind a sliding door, including the TV and books on the living room end and tableware by the dining table. Kept simple in design, the small galley kitchen is enveloped in oak veneer and accented with marble countertops and backsplash. To make it seem larger, Alexandre added mirrors throughout.

Interior Design — How To Design A Stylish & Durable Home For A Young Family

    3:26

Designer Erin Feasby of Feasby & Bleeks Design proves that decorating with light neutral hues for a young family is possible. See how she brightens up a dark and dated home to create a modern classic space that’s built to withstand the wear and tear of a young family.

To freshen up the space, Erin painted the walls a warm white, and incorporated tones of grey and quiet colors throughout. New gorgeous grey-brown hardwood floors complement the light palette. In the white kitchen, the existing backsplash and cupboards were kept, and grey tartan fabric was added to the dining table chairs for a durable yet stylish addition. The living room is neutral with apricot accents and floral prints. A sculptural light fixture in the dining room adds the wow factor to the understated design.

Interior Design — See How Much A House Changed In 22 Years!

    3:12

Decades years after a house was featured in H&H, we share a second look inside. See what the space looked like back in 1995 compared to today! Plus, discover how high-quality furniture can stand the test of time.

With an empty nest, designer Shelley Kirsch gave her family home a modern update. She wanted her home to reflect the same aesthetic as before, but with a more current look. Shelley started by giving the trim a fresh coat of paint to hide chips. In the kitchen, she took down the wall that separated the space from the dining area and added a segmented window to bring more natural light to the main floor. Next, she repurposed her existing furniture. The dining table was re-stained to a dark walnut, while the sofa was given a facelift with new slip covers. The basement, which used to be the kids’ domain, was transformed into an adult lounge area.

Interior Design – This Modern White Kitchen Has A Surprising Detail

    3:20

As tailored as a men’s suit, this white kitchen has hits of black and subtle graphic accents for a clean and modern look that’s still incredibly classic. Designer Philippe Beauparlant shares a look at the small kitchen he designed featuring a creamy-white palette that will never go out of style!

The layout of the space is set up like a galley kitchen, with an L-shaped configuration that separates a seating area from the cooking area. A delicately textured backsplash adds depth and interest to the space, while black wire-framed shelves that sit snugly under the cabinets offer a graphic hit and extra storage. The result is an updated look on the classic white kitchen, with unexpected details modernizing the typically traditional style.

    Interior Design – A Chef’s Dream Kitchen

    3:42

A cluttered kitchen is transformed into an organized space, complete with top-notch appliances (including two stoves!), an open-plan layout and plenty of storage. See how architect Wanda Ely gave homeowners Ferris and Aaron Grant their dream space.

As a chef, Aaron dreamed of having a restaurant-style kitchen that’s both functional and family-friendly. To achieve this, Wanda merged the home’s dining and living space with the kitchen by adding a long table that doubles as a prep station and a place to eat. A pegboard continues the length of the area, where a collection of pots and pans transitions to a display of family photos. A large pantry that’s built atop the original exposed brick, mismatched dining chairs and rustic finishes add character to the space.

H&H design editor Kai Ethier shares how she transformed her friend’s dated kitchen into a welcoming space fit for a family. See how she added personality and storage with the help of AyA Kitchens for a pretty and practical design.

Homeowner Deirdre Matthews wanted a durable, contemporary kitchen, a large prep area and an open-concept design. Deirdre opted for warm walnut cabinets and, instead of marble counters, a porcelain slab countertop. The scalloped tile marble backsplash, which looks like mermaid scales, is a playful addition to the space, while a trio of Fresnel pendant lights completes the look. Open shelves offer a place to display cherished possessions and the new functional layout features a large kitchen island with plenty of drawers.

Interior Design — How To Design A Principal Bedroom With A Skylight

    4:45

See how H&H‘s Kai Ethier redecorated her principal bedroom and installed a VELUX skylight to create a dreamy reading nook. Practical storage solutions make the most of the small space, and a blush pink wall color gives the room a cozy, warm vibe. After watching the video, enter to win a sun tunnel here:

The old bubble skylight in Kai’s third-floor bedroom was leaking so she visited a VELUX showroom to find a no-leak replacement. After the installation by Snow’s Construction, Kai removed the sliding doors leading to her deck, making the skylight the primary source of natural light. Below the skylight, Kai installed a dresser and a daybed with storage underneath. A modular closet hidden behind custom linen drapes keeps things organized.

Interior Design — Modern Family Home Design

    4:07

Designing a contemporary home with clean lines that’s also functional for a family is no easy feat, but architect Christopher McCormack and designers Erin Jones and Megan Breese of CMID made it happen. See how this talented team made well-considered design choices that led to a modern, livable space.

The goal was to create a high-end look that’s equally functional, so the designers incorporated smart storage and luxe finishes into the open-concept design. A fireplace clad in plate steel with built-in shelves for firewood logs is the main floor’s showpiece. In the dining room, raising the ceiling above the light fixture adds height to the space. The large kitchen island makes for the perfect entertaining hub as it doubles as an eating area and prep station. Tan leather sofas and chairs offer a casual, yet upscale look in the family room. Upstairs, the master bathroom is filled with natural light, while a dual-sided fireplace in the master bedroom makes for an extravagant focal point, both inside and on the balcony.

Joel added California flair to this small city backyard with a mix of rustic and modern materials for an eclectic look. A stained black fence surrounds the space, while Dutch-modern horizontal lines calm down the lounge area by the pool. Old-patina tin from the ‘30s on the side of the garage and a corten steel wall add warmth to the outdoor dining space, which is separated from the rest of the backyard by glass.

Interior Design — Classic To Contemporary Makeover

    4:26

A traditional family home is brought into the 21st century by designers Ashley Tracey and Laura McLellan of The Design Co. See how they transformed the dated home into a contemporary space with a white palette.

Ashley and Laura used paint and oversized mirrors to make the rooms feel larger and brighter. In the living room, expansive windows allow natural light to fill the space. A baby grand piano gives the room a point of focus and bright artwork adds color. In the dining room, soft grey walls let the contemporary dining table and chairs steal the show, while a large oversized mirror expands the space. Wood walls in the office are a handsome contrast to the rest of the home. Ashley and Laura knocked down a dividing wall to create a modern open-concept kitchen that flows into the cozy family room.

Interior Design — How To Design A Little Girl’s Dream Bedroom & Nursery

Interior Design – Before & After: A Dreamy Master Bedroom Suite

She swapped bright books and toys with quiet colors, minimalist decor and soothing textures to create the ultimate escape. Patterned grass cloth wallpaper adds muted pattern on two of the walls, while a wide-upholstered headboard brings luxury to the space. A floating wall divides the room and creates the illusion of a walk-in closet, while still letting in natural light. Off-white carpet blankets the floor, and built-in storage keeps the space neat and tidy. The master bathroom has a clean white palette with modern finishes and striking statement tile.
