    4:45

H&H’s Joel Bray and Jennifer Koper bring high style to a dorm room at the brand new George Brown College residences in Toronto. Learn how to transform a basic room into an on-trend young adult living space with easy DIY projects and cool temporary decorating solutions perfect for dorms and rental apartments.

Joel and Jennifer started with removable wallpaper to create a feature wall behind the bed. Then, they gave the bed a layered look by combining colorful and patterned bedding. A DIY art wall opposite the bed balances out the wallpaper while adding personality. Teal velvet drapes hide the contents in the open closet and floor runners layered around the bed break up the grey carpet underfoot. Desk accessories, books and a faux succulent plant complete the room.

Interior Design – Family-Friendly Bathroom Design Ideas

    3:46

Give every bathroom and powder room in your home a unique look that works with the rest of the house. Designer Dvira Ovadia shares two bathrooms and two powder rooms she designed in one house, each with its own take on classic decorating. Get tips on where to splurge and save, and how to mix finishes and surfaces.

The boys’ bathroom is edgy, and feature classic white subway tiles that contrast perfectly with the walnut cabinetry and black hexagon floor tiles. In the girls’ bathroom, Dvida uses white tiles with hints of milky pink, and instead of cabinetry, an étagère is used to display towels, soaps and knick-knacks. This design works well for children but will grow with the kids thanks to the classic finishes. The formal powder room is grand with a mix of different finishes and colours, including white wall tiles, dark floor tiles, polished nickel faucets, oil-rubbed bronze lighting and silk wallpaper. The smaller powder room is simple yet stylish, and has a feature wall with hexagon tiles paired with a grey vanity for another classic look.

Homeowners Elizabeth Dyer, artist and co-owner of the shop Advice From A Caterpillar, and Peter Smith give us a tour of their serene, three-storey loft. See how the two creatives added their own style to the unique space using a white palette.

The second floor boasts an open-concept dining room and living area. Elizabeth and Peter furnished the space with easy-to-clean, kid-friendly pieces like butterfly chairs and a canvas rug. In the kitchen, large doors open up to the back garden and terrace, making entertaining easy. The third floor is an all-white studio space, which has tons of natural light thanks to a row of skylights.

Interior Design — An Art-Lover’s Small & Colorful Loft

    2:56

Erika Floysvik and her partner, Chris, were sold on this third-floor loft in Toronto’s East End when they realized it had enough room to display their art collection. See how they furnished the 1,140-square-foot space with their most treasured pieces, a sophisticated use of color, pattern and plenty of storage.

Large black-framed windows and 14-foot-high ceilings counteract the lack of space to create a bright and airy interior. The ceiling and exposed ductwork is painted white for a fresh look. Custom-built furniture suits the scale of the rooms, and a walnut storage unit transitions nicely into the kitchen area. A large gallery wall displays all of Erika and Chris’s artwork, while graphic wallpaper makes a bold statement in the bedroom.

Interior Design – Tour A Farmhouse-Inspired Family Room & Kitchen

    3:52

A 17-foot addition solves a young family’s need for more light and space in their recently purchased home. See how designer and art gallery owner Alison Milne added authentic farmhouse charm to the newly built area with vintage accessories and rustic details.

She mixed grey shaker cabinets with beadboard panelling in the kitchen, and added mesh detailing for textural interest. Wide plank floors in a natural honey color add to the farmhouse vibe, while old barnwood finishes and painted brick walls provide warmth and richness to the space.

Interior Design – French Country Apartment Decor

    2:44

Interior designer and ceramic artist Trudy Crane of Lookslikewhite knows a thing or two about decorating with her studio’s namesake hue. See inside her 1,200-square-foot Montreal loft that’s blanketed in the snowy shade, and get her expert tips on using white in a small space.

Inspired by Scandinavian style, Trudy loves the simplicity of white. To bring warmth to the shade, she relied on different colors of wood, rustic touches, mirrors and crystal details. Exposed brick, layers of texture and French country accents liven up the space, while easy-to-clean fabrics and slipcovers prevent the loft from feeling too precious. Multiple large windows allow plenty of light to flood in, visually expanding the square-footage.

Interior Design – A Family-Friendly Home Influenced By Scandinavian Design

Designer Gillian Lazanik of Affecting Spaces shares her own home makeover that’s not only functional for her family of four, but reflects their personality. See how she created a bright and open space with Scandinavian design influences, playful touches of color and a clean and minimal aesthetic.

To create a child-proof space that’s safe for her growing kids, Gillian opted for round tables to avoid sharp edges, durable plastic dining chairs and laminate floors so they wouldn’t get scratched by her dog’s nails. Inspired by Scandinavian design, she kept the palette neutral with pops of black, but brought in color with accessories and art. The family shares one bathroom, so functionality was key. A double sink, sliding doors and a cedar wall keep things spacious and serene.

Interior Design — How To Design A Serene Guest Bedroom Suite

    3:08

H&H’s Joel Bray takes us inside the third floor of his newly renovated Victorian rowhouse in Toronto. The small addition features a serene guest bedroom, bathroom and walk-in closet.

(After watching the video, click here to enter to win a $500 Visa gift card from Icynene: In the bedroom, Joel used the same paint color for the walls and trim — Oxford White (CC-30) by Benjamin Moore — but brought interest to the room with a pale blue ceiling in Borrowed Light (235) by Farrow & Ball. A four poster bed, a wooden dresser that doubles as a night stand and a light blue lamp all add character. To make the bathroom feel larger, Joel opted for a glass shower enclosure, used the same hexagon tiles on both the shower and bathroom floors, and painted the sloped ceiling the same color as the walls.

Interior Design — How To Add Modern Style To A Historical Home

    3:29

Step inside a light-filled historical home with a stunning modern interior. See how designer Ines Mazzotta of Kelly Hopter Interiors updated the 1877 space to fit her family’s lifestyle.

To respect its 19th century bones, Ines introduced applied trim to the walls, crown molding and Victorian-style ceiling medallions for a traditional touch. The kitchen was already renovated when she and her family moved in, but it wasn’t in their style. To avoid a full renovation, Ines gave the kitchen a facelift by painting the cabinets in a two-toned palette of black and white. She also kept the original flooring throughout the house, as well as the non-functioning fireplace, which now acts as a decorative statement. Both the living room and family room are furnished with comfortable, family-friendly furniture. In the master bedroom, tall ceilings keep things light and airy while luxe bedding steals the show.

Interior Design — A Sophisticated Cottage Makeover

    6:24

See how designer Emily Griffin used beadboard panelling, antiques and a watery palette to transform a drab cottage into a stylish summer house.

Emily started by replacing the drywall throughout the main living areas with beadboard panelling. She created a welcoming entryway with a country vibe by bringing in an antique bench and vintage-look mirror. The kitchen and dining areas were combined to create an open-concept space with a nine-foot dining table in the center. A servery tucked into the corner features reclaimed wood shelves. Just off the kitchen is a sitting room, where a stone fireplace steals the show. In the sunroom, a minimalist approach was taken to let the natural surroundings shine. Upstairs, the master bedroom has a sophisticated feel, thanks to quiet, patterned wallpaper and a colonial-style bed. Emily took the ensuite bathroom down to the studs and added a new window, herringbone floors and shiplap walls.

To hide the dated industrial radiator, the designers created a custom counter with shelving to fit the modern aesthetic of the space.

Interior Design — A Bright & Inviting Basement Guest Suite

    2:47

Designer Hilary Ramsay created a beautiful guest bedroom and bathroom in her parent’s basement that both kids and adults will love. See how she incorporated color and texture to create an inviting space with character.

In the guest bedroom, Hilary added two twin beds to preserve extra floor space. She started with buttery yellow walls that read as a neutral, then brought in color and texture with drapery and pillows. An oversized sisal rug is layered atop a colorful textured rug, while stripes and small prints dress up the Euro sham bedding. The bathroom has a similar aesthetic with a clean white base that’s brought to life with warm grey and hints of sunny yellow.

Interior Design: A Designers Elegant Colorful Home

    3:55

Montreal- and New York-based designer Garrow Kedigian is known for his fearless use of pattern and color. Tour inside his luxurious and layered Montreal home that will have you craving a fresh coat of paint.

Built in the 1920s by a British architect, Garrow’s home is inspired by terraced houses in London. The 5,500-square-foot space features a gracious living room with symmetrical black-framed windows, grand furniture, a fireplace and a geometric Greek key carpet. To enhance the beautiful architecture — thanks to high ceilings, wall panelling and crown molding — Garrow painted the walls in rich, saturated hues. The multi-purpose dining space is painted a deep teal, while a dining banquette with a modern glass-top table keeps the room airy and light. In the small, but efficient kitchen, black-painted cabinets and a mirrored backsplash add personality. Up the impressive staircase is a master suite, which has a regal four-poster canopy bed, and a charming sitting room. A hidden third floor houses Garrow’s “writing room” with chalk-panel walls, and a guest bedroom that plays with color.

Interior Design – A Double-Duty Dining Room And Office

    3:15

H&H design editor Joel Bray takes us behind the scenes of a photo shoot for our August issue, where he shows how to use one room two different ways. See how he easily creates a stylish double-duty dining room and workspace using transitional pieces that transform a formal area into a casual office for everyday use.

By being strategic with furniture selection and incorporating decor that works in both types of rooms, Joel was able to create a space that's truly multifunctional. Built-in bookshelves bring warmth to the room, while an upholstered bench provides secret storage. An embroidered accent chair at the head of the table can easily be used as a desk chair. Once the rest of the dining chairs are removed, office accessories and a lamp that were tucked neatly away onto the sideboard become the feature attraction in the home office.

Interior Design — Small Modern Family Home Makeover

    3:37

In this small space makeover, designer Meghan Carter transforms a dingy main floor into a light-filled, functional space fit for an active family of four. See how she used modern and industrial details to create a look that’s both urban and youthful.

Meghan began by swapping out the front door for one that’s two-thirds glass, and painted the entire main floor white to perk up the space. The small foyer lacked storage, so she added closets, and refinished the floors in marble herringbone tile to add personality. In the living room, she revamped the existing brick fireplace with a sleek, simple design and marble detail. Meghan removed the wall dividing the kitchen and dining room to create one large, open-concept room. A ten-foot island takes center stage in the eat-in kitchen, while a sputnik-style light fixture above the dining table adds graphic punch.

Interior Design — Modern Light Wood Kitchen Makeover

    2:17

Designer Philippe Beauparlant shares a spacious kitchen he designed for a couple with grown children. See how he used light wood cabinetry and black countertops to create a space that’s comfortable yet sophisticated. Plus, find out how he overcame some challenges along the way!

Philippe started by expanding the kitchen layout into the dining room. There was a structural column in the middle of the room, so Philippe stripped it down to its minimum scale and painted it black, creating a camouflage effect. When faced with an awkward angled wall, Philippe shifted the orientation of the cabinetry and filled the remaining space with a slender window. On the ceiling, a series of “fins” anchors the L-shaped island.

Interior Design — A Designers Chic Montreal Home

    3:48

Designer Scott Yetman takes us inside his Montreal condo, where unlikely pairings live in harmony. See how he created a relaxed, art-gallery feel in the 1,800-square-foot space by mixing antiques with contemporary art.

Scott gutted the builder-basic space to create an open-concept floor plan, and furnished it with many of his favorite pieces. In the kitchen, tall cabinetry with pull-outs were added for a more streamlined look, while a marble backsplash acts as art. Large windows expand the living room and light herringbone floors offer a sense of history. A Biedermeier chest brings character to the contemporary bathroom, while the ensuite in the tranquil master bedroom is sleek and monochromatic. Two closets were transformed into one for ample storage space.

Interior Design – This Modern Home Is A Lesson In Minimalist Living

    4:34

Architect Gillian Green took a pared-back approach when designing this home. See how she transformed a dark and dated space into a modern home with a reduced palette that still feels warm and inviting.

Gillian opened up the main floor to create a layout that lets the natural light flood in, brightening the clean-lined interior. Concrete floors provide depth and movement, while white oak wood cabinets further the warmth. The kitchen is storage-heavy with a large island where people can gather. A large piece of limestone with stacked logs acts as art in the living room, while black and steel finishes maintain the sleek aesthetic.

    Interior Design — A Two-Toned Kitchen Makeover

    2:29

Designer Linnea Lions tours a kitchen she designed in homeowner Chantal McKinnon’s 100-year-old home. Learn how she maximized space and storage in a closed kitchen layout while keeping style in mind.

When Chantal first moved into this home, the kitchen lacked function, had dated appliances and was in need of a modern update. She wanted a two-tone kitchen with light uppers and dark grey lower cabinets for a graphic yet airy feel. The space also needed additional storage. The first thing Linnea tackled was hiding the chimney stack with a pantry wall featuring shallow cabinets and pull-out storage. Right next to it, a servery was created with open shelving and a full-height backsplash. A large island with storage grounds the space, and is perfect for entertaining guests. Floating shelves made from reclaimed wood add warmth to the grey and white palette.
