Interior Design — How To Design A Serene Guest Bedroom Suite

    3:08

H&H’s Joel Bray takes us inside the third floor of his newly renovated Victorian rowhouse in Toronto. The small addition features a serene guest bedroom, bathroom and walk-in closet.

Learn why Joel chose Icynene spray foam insulation to reduce noise, keep the guest suite warm in the winter and cool in the summer, and improve energy efficiency. (After watching the video, click here to enter to win a $500 Visa gift card from Icynene: In the bedroom, Joel used the same paint color for the walls and trim — Oxford White (CC-30) by Benjamin Moore — but brought interest to the room with a pale blue ceiling in Borrowed Light (235) by Farrow & Ball. A four poster bed, a wooden dresser that doubles as a night stand and a light blue lamp all add character. To make the bathroom feel larger, Joel opted for a glass shower enclosure, used the same hexagon tiles on both the shower and bathroom floors, and painted the sloped ceiling the same color as the walls.

Interior Design — Pared-Down Minimalist House

    1:45

Homeowner Wendy Davis shares a look inside her architecturally important Toronto home with cool, modern style. Originally designed by starchitect Barton Myers, who worked on the Art Gallery of Ontario’s 1993 expansion, the Yorkville house was brought up to date while preserving its original character by Jodi and Andrew Batay-Csorba, who studied under Myers at UCLA. Wendy further modernized the space with her minimalist style, using her curated art collection and pieces she picked up while travelling to bring personality to the light-filled, 4,000-square-foot home.

Interior Design — How to Design Rooms for Entertaining

    2:18

Tour an open-concept main floor that has the feel of a fancy hotel and lounge. See how designer Kim Lambert used her experience in the hospitality industry to design a modern home that’s great for entertaining.

The biggest challenge was creating flow between the spaces, while ensuring they were both usable and beautiful. To bring an intimate atmosphere to the dining room, Kim painted the walls in a mid-charcoal hue. In the living room, she chose a lighter palette for a more feminine feel. Instead of creating a formal living room layout, Kim opted for a unique combination of standout pieces for guests to sit on. An adjacent piano room has a similar aesthetic to the dining room with charcoal-painted walls. An upholstered panel that absorbs sound from the piano also adds a layer of warmth and coziness to the room. A selection of contemporary art pieces throughout the home completes the hotel-inspired look.

Karen removed a block of cabinets that closed off the space and replaced it with convenient built-in storage. She relied on a mix of elements, from wood to marble and even faux concrete wallpaper, to bring in the warmth it desperately needed. The sitting and TV area is made up of a cosy rug with two chairs and tall steel doors with white linen curtains that shine light into the space. Interior Design – How To Design A Sophisticated Family Home

By respecting the space’s traditional bones and adding sophisticated decor that’s also family-friendly, Jessica was able to create an inviting, livable space for her client. See how she designed an elegant family home with pattern, colour and refined details.

Though it looks like a do-not-touch home, the space is actually very kid-friendly. Jessica kept the client’s two children in mind, so was careful to choose durable pieces that could take some wear-and-tear. Elegant accents, like glass chandeliers and panel moulding in the master bedroom, add a high-end aesthetic that’s still suitable for a young family. An Art Deco inspired dining table sits in the dining room among pinstripe wallpaper, adding even more glam to the tasteful space.

Interior Design – Tour A Young Family’s Functional And Stylish Home

    3:08

Carly Nemtean of Carriage Lane Design-Build Inc. shares how she transformed a small home into a functional and contemporary space for a young family.

The kitchen is the hub of the home, so Carly focussed on comfort in addition to utility. Stained wood and white cabinets with shaker details act as furniture against a shimmering herringbone backsplash. In the dining area, a modern glass chandelier hangs above a custom table, while the family room features a blue mid-century modern accent chair for a playful touch. The front entryway’s floor tiles are an ode to old Montreal and European streets, and will add patina to the space over time.

Interior Design - Classic Bistro-Style Kitchen Packed With Storage

    2:54

Architect Gillian Green gave this small, dated kitchen an update in both form and function thanks to bistro-style finishes, smart storage options and a 250-square-foot addition.

While the home was well-proportioned, the kitchen was particularly small. By expanding the kitchen into the homeowners' backyard, Gillian Green was able to give her clients the space they needed. A black and white colour palette brings cohesiveness to the newly opened space and creates a classic bistro-style feel. The white subway tile backsplash and black-and-white mosaic floor tiles, inspired by European bakeries, complement the aesthetic.

Gillian added storage with a large kitchen island, along with an array of cabinets and drawers. Floor-to-ceiling metal glass doors overlook the backyard, and an oval Saarinen table complete with a curved banquette and bentwood x-back chairs provide the perfect dining space.

    2:59

Designer Vanessa Francis transforms a drab kitchen into a bright English farmhouse-style space. Discover how she combined a serene palette, hits of black and a furniture-style, colorful island to add character to the room.

Vanessa swapped the kitchen’s warm, brown tones for off-white cabinets and countertops. She kept some of the existing cabinets and added crown molding at the top to take them to the ceiling. Black hardware, sconces and lantern lighting deliver graphic punch, while a grey-blue kitchen island offers a subtle wash of color. Interior Design — Colorful Small Kitchen Makeover

    3:15

In this galley kitchen renovation, colorful cabinets, brass hardware and bold wallpaper refreshed the dated space. See how designer Sarah Hartill transformed the kitchen of homeowner and H&H’s editorial director Alice Lawlor into one that’s stylish and family-friendly.

While the kitchen had good bones, it needed a better layout and more storage. An island that spanned almost the entire width disturbed the flow, so Sarah replaced it with a custom one that serves as a prep area and offers casual seating. The Caesarstone countertop and backsplash offer a modern look, while cabinets painted in Benjamin Moore’s Misted Green (2138-50) add subtle color. The oak island and shelf warm up the palette. A matte black faucet gives graphic edge, but the showstopper here is undoubtedly the English wallpaper that feels botanical without being too flowery.

Architectural designer Claudia Bader of Creative Union discusses how she transformed an unfinished basement into a cool, industrial-style small apartment. Get ideas on how to make a small space look larger with multi-functional rooms and secret storage spots.

Claudia lowered the ground by two feet to add extra height to the basement, and enlarged the windows to let in more natural light. A spacious living-and-dining room centers this basement apartment, while a walk-in closet, powder room and bedroom are neatly tucked away. A bench surrounds the perimeter of the living area for extra seating, a giant table acts as the main hub to socialize, and an elevated built-in bed carries storage space underneath. Reclaimed pieces are used throughout to offer character to the space.

INTERIOR DESIGN: A Bright Bistro Kitchen With Gorgeous Graphic Accents

    3:25

Lindsay Konior and Sarah Keenleyside of Qanuk Interiors Inc. discuss how they transformed a small, cluttered space into a bright eat-in kitchen with an open-plan layout and lots of storage.

The homeowners are tall, so expanding the layout became the starting point for Lindsay and Sarah. To create an open and free-flowing space, the designers placed the dining area next to the large kitchen island, where a custom banquette is accented by a geometric brass chandelier. Unique accents inject personality, like patterned tile on the floor for a rug-like effect, a gallery wall and statement-making backsplash and custom range hood. Black-framed, bistro-style shelves are mounted snugly under the upper cabinets, while hidden cabinets behind the island provide secret storage space.

Interior Design – How To Transform A Kids’ Room Into A Teens’ Room

    3:44

Designer Jenna Cadieux explains how she refreshed two small bedrooms for kids transitioning into their teen years. See how she revamped a boy’s room and a girl’s room to bring new life into the two very different spaces.

The girl’s bedroom already consisted of a custom headboard, which became the foundation of the overall color palette. Jenna added curtains with peach tones, a beaded chandelier, a bookshelf, and a mix of cushions to add some personality. The boy’s bedroom was a lot smaller, so choosing the right pieces to fit the design was key. The double bed took up a lot of room, so Jenna chose a pivoting sconce and floating nightstand to save space. A mango wood desk with floating bookshelves and faux wood blinds add to the rustic, California vibe.

In this small space makeover, designer Meghan Carter transforms a dingy main floor into a light-filled, functional space fit for an active family of four. See how she used modern and industrial details to create a look that’s both urban and youthful.

Meghan began by swapping out the front door for one that’s two-thirds glass, and painted the entire main floor white to perk up the space. Meghan removed the wall dividing the kitchen and dining room to create one large, open-concept room. A ten-foot island takes center stage in the eat-in kitchen, while a sputnik-style light fixture above the dining table adds graphic punch.

The homeowner’s wanted a kitchen they could use for family time and entertaining. Keeping this in mind, Sarah knocked down the dividing walls to make an open-concept layout that included a dining area. A large island centers the space, providing lots of storage.

Sarah’s design is clean and modern with some mid-century elements to complement the rest of the home’s modern decor. A textured geometric backsplash serves as a subtle accent while stone-like porcelain tiles bring warmth in. Large windows offer a flood of natural light, adding to the relaxed and cool vibe.

Interior Design — Pretty Kitchen Makeover On A Budget

    2:55

Designer Trish Johnston transforms a small family kitchen into a pretty space for a family with two little girls. See how she used glamorous finishes to add personality to every square foot.

Trish describes this bright and airy kitchen as a jewel box. To achieve this look, she painted the existing cabinetry in Benjamin Moore’s Cloud White (CC-40), replaced the countertops with a showstopping Calacatta marble and accessorized with brass and crystal hardware throughout. While the kitchen is small, Trish managed to fit an eat-in zone by extending the peninsula. A powdery shade of light blue on the cabinetry gives the space a dash of color, while an elegant patterned fabric on the blinds and upholstered stools offers an extra touch of opulence.

Interior Design – See Inside A Creative Family’s Artsy City Home

Artist Mark Puchala and his wife, Canada Goose creative director Michelle Donnelly, transformed a run down semi in Toronto’s West End into a creative and comfortable family home. See how they combined interesting art with a unique mix of furniture and finishes to create a space fit for family life with their 8-year-old son, Jack.

When they found the semidetached Victorian, it was run down and abandoned, but that didn’t stop the style-savvy couple from purchasing it. Working with an architect, they renovated the main floor to create an open kitchen and family room. With sliding glass doors that lead to the backyard, it’s the perfect chill zone for entertaining. An outdoor oasis, complete with a modern pool and patio set, acts as an extension of the indoors. A mix of high and low, vintage and classic pieces bring the rest of the space to life.

Interior Design – How To Decorate With Color & Pattern In A Small Space

    4:38

Designer Meredith Heron proves that bold decor can look great in a small space. See how she transformed her small family home with standout color and pattern.

To brighten up her tiny, dreary home, Meredith used daring decor in calculated spaces. She defined the foyer with large-scale wallpaper, which opens up to the dining room. In the combined dining and living room, a neutral base allowed Meredith to layer on bright color and playful prints. Not one, but two tablecloths cover the dining table for a quirky take on pattern play. Furniture in different scales makes the rooms look taller than they are. Meredith used an unconventional color palette in the master bedroom, choosing darker shades like indigo. A reupholstered headboard adds a pop of peach, while malachite green night tables are an unexpected element. The bathroom’s small size allowed Meredith to splurge on luxurious finishes, like marble herringbone floors.

Interior Design – Family-Friendly Bathroom Design Ideas

Designer Dvira Ovadia shares two bathrooms and two powder rooms she designed in one house, each with its own take on classic decorating. Get tips on where to splurge and save, and how to mix finishes and surfaces.

The boys’ bathroom is edgy, and feature classic white subway tiles that contrast perfectly with the walnut cabinetry and black hexagon floor tiles. This design works well for children but will grow with the kids thanks to the classic finishes. The formal powder room is grand with a mix of different finishes and colours, including white wall tiles, dark floor tiles, polished nickel faucets, oil-rubbed bronze lighting and silk wallpaper. The smaller powder room is simple yet stylish, and has a feature wall with hexagon tiles paired with a grey vanity for another classic look.

Designer Shirley Meisels of MHouse Inc. proves that a modern space can be cozy and inviting. See how she brought a homey yet sophisticated atmosphere to a recently renovated living room and dining room.

Interior Design — A Cooks Dream Modern Condo

    2:48

The Plant condo, an innovative 10-storey building planned for Toronto’s hip Queen West neighborhood, is a dream for urban gardeners. Esteemed designer John Tong of +tongtong shares a closer look at the project, revealing some key features that make the space so unique.

Focused on the idea of growing plants in an urban context, The Plant condos are designed with a wide and shallow layout, instead of a long and narrow one, to maximize the sun’s rays. In the kitchen, a full-height pantry and a hanging rack for pots and pans maximizes storage. There’s also a buggy with an herb garden built into the island, as well as a counter-height dining table for additional seating and prep space. The den has glass doors, keeping the units bright and airy. The bathrooms are designed to be ultra-functional while taking cues from the rest of the suite’s modern, industrial design.

Interior Design – How To Get The Mid-Century Modern Look

    3:02

Designer Samantha Sacks shares the secret to designing an elegant mid-century modern space. See how she mixes colour, pattern and vintage heirloom furniture to liven up a Victorian home.

Samantha chose a geometric mid-century rug with Indian influences as the jumping off point to the rest of the decor. The homeowners had a lot of great mid-century furniture passed down from generations, like an old record table, but it needed some updating. She upholstered those pieces with lighter fabrics and brought in graphic patterned pillows and a fur throw to soften the look. Crisp white walls freshen up the space, while vintage chairs bring just the right amount of warmth to the dining table. The result is a stylish, liveable space with sentimental value that mixes old and new.

Interior Design — How To Design A Shared Kids’ Bedroom

    3:02

Design editor Kai Ethiers’ two young share a colorful bedroom in her small Toronto home. Get her tips for creating an organized space that both kids will love.

Kai’s focus was on maximizing storage in the 160-square-foot room. She started by closing off a tiny closet and replacing it with custom cabinets, which hold everything from clothes to toys, as well as a bookshelf and a chest of drawers. A bunk bed conserves floor space (and her son, Louis, loves it). A nearby couch, topped with two coordinating Kantha quilts, doubles as an extra bed for sleepovers and a dreamy reading nook. A bright striped rug, patterned bins and quirky animal masks hung like art add personality to the playful kids’ space.

    3:09

Diane Ernjakovic and Rachel Keach of One Three Design share how they transformed a small 475-square-foot basement into a bright and cheerful living space for a family.

Diane and Rachel painted the walls white for a fresh feel, and added neutral furniture and punches of colorful accessories. A built-in unit that displays decor has a back-lit mirror for additional lighting and warmth. The homeowner’s husband’s diplomas act as art in the modern office, while the gym features a gorgeous graphic wall. The result is a basement that doesn’t feel like a basement at all, but instead, an extension of the home.
