    The Winstons - Amen Brother

    2:33

The most famous loop af all times! Amen Break, a six-second drum sample( starts at 1:26 ) from the b-side of this chart-topping single from 1969. This sample was used extensively in early hiphop and sample-based music, and became the basis for drum-and-bass and jungle music -- a six-second clip that spawned several entire subcultures.

If you want to dive deeper into the evolving role of breakbeats in electronic music,

Watch this video about the Amen Break:

    The Winstons - Amen, Brother ( )

    Wikipedia Source:
The Winstons were a 1960s funk and soul music group, based in Washington, D.C.. They are known for their 1969 recording of an EP featuring a song entitled Color Him Father on the A-side, and a song entitled Amen, Brother on the B-side. Half-way into Amen, Brother, there is a drum solo (performed by G.C. Coleman) which would cause The Winston's EP to become one of the most widely-sampled records in the history of electronic music. Sampled audio clips of the drum solo became known as the Amen Break, which has been used in thousands of tracks in a large number of musical genres, including drum and bass, hip hop, jungle, big beat, industrial and electronica.

The Color Him Father record sold over one million copies, and received a gold record awarded by the Recording Industry Association of America on 24 July 1969.

    Label : (Metromedia Records, BMI)

Biography by Ron Wynn & Bruce Eder :
A Washington, D.C.-based soul act led by Richard Spencer, the Winstons signed to Curtom in early 1968 and lasted there for one single, the rousing Need a Replacement. They had a sound that was somewhat similar to the Impressions, but were unfortunate enough to have signed with Curtom before the label had national distribution, and the single never got the play it should have. A year after leaving Curtom, they hit for the Metromedia label with a huge single called Color Him Father, which became a Top Ten R&B and pop hit, just missing number one on the R&B list, and also earned a Grammy for Best R&B Song. It was both a great tribute number and outstanding lead vocal from Richard Spencer, along with Ray Maritano, Quincy Mattison, Phil Tolotta, Sonny Peckrol, and G.C. Coleman. Mattison and Coleman were veterans of Otis Redding's band. The Winstons eventually toured as the backup band for the Impressions, but never again made any noise on the charts.

    The Winstons line-up included:

    Gregory C. Coleman (vocals, drums)
    Ray Maritano (vocals, alto saxophone)
    Quincy Mattison (vocals, lead guitar)
    Sonny Pekerol (vocals, bass guitar)
Richard Lewis Spencer (lead vocals, tenor saxophone)
    Phil Tolotta (second lead, organ)

For the love of money - O jays Full Version

    7:11

Edit:The bottom bar is as a result of a re-upload on Youtube's part. The video was originally uploaded in 2009 and had since been taken down. In the second quarter of 2014 it was put back up and thus the bottom bar exists.

My first video! ''Don't let money change you!''
Lyrics:Money money money money, money (x6)
Some people got to have it
    Some people really need it
Listen to me y'all, do things, do things, do bad things with it
You wanna do things, do things, do things, good things with it
    Talk about cash money, money
Talk about cash money- dollar bills, yall

    For the love of money
People will steal from their mother
    For the love of money
People will rob their own brother
    For the love of money
People can't even walk the street
Because they never know who in the world they're gonna beat
For that lean, mean, mean green
    Almighty dollar, money

    For the love of money
People will lie, Lord, they will cheat
    For the love of money
People don't care who they hurt or beat
    For the love of money
A woman will sell her precious body
For a small piece of paper it carries a lot of weight
Call it lean, mean, mean green

    Almighty dollar

I know money is the root of all evil
Do funny things to some people
Give me a nickel, brother can you spare a dime
Money can drive some people out of their minds

Got to have it, I really need it
How many things have I heard you say
    Some people really need it
How many things have I heard you say
Got to have it, I really need it
How many things have I heard you say
Lay down, lay down, a woman will lay down
    For the love of money
All for the love of money
Don't let, don't let, don't let money rule you
    For the love of money
    Money can change people sometimes
Don't let, don't let, don't let money fool you
    Money can fool people sometimes
People! Don't let money, don't let money change you,
it will keep on changing, changing up your mind.

    Edwin Starr - War

    3:26

Original video of Edwin Starr singing his famous song: War [Original Music video from 1969]

Originally written under the Motown label, and first performed by The Temptations, War was later re-released as a single with Edwin Starr as vocals. This version is considered a more emotional version and has become the most popular protest song ever.

    Lyrics:

    War, huh yeah
    What is it good for?
    Absolutely nothing, oh hoh, oh
    War huh yeah
    What is it good for?
Absolutely nothing, say it again y'all
    War, huh good God
    What is it good for?
    Absolutely nothing, listen to me

    Oh, war, I despise
'Cause it means destruction of innocent lives
War means tears to thousands of mothers eyes
When their sons go off to fight and lose their lives

    I said
    War, huh good God y'all
    What is it good for?
Absolutely nothing, just say it again
    War whoa Lord
    What is it good for?
    Absolutely nothing, listen to me
War, it ain't nothin' but a heartbreaker
War, friend only to the undertaker

Oh war, is an enemy to all mankind
The thought of war blows my mind
War has caused unrest within the younger generation
Induction, then destruction who wants to die

    War, good God, y'all
    What is it good for?
Absolutely nothing, say it, say it, say it
    War, uh huh, yeah, huh
    What is it good for?
    Absolutely nothing, listen to me
War, it ain't nothin' but a heartbreaker
War, it's got one friend that's the undertaker

Oh, war has shattered many young man's dreams
Made him disabled bitter and mean
Life is much to short and precious to spend fighting wars these days
War can't give life it can only take it away, ooh

    War, huh, good God y'all
    What is it good for?
    Absolutely nothing, say it again
    War, whoa, Lord
    What is it good for?
    Absolutely nothing, listen to me
War, it ain't nothin' but a heartbreaker
War, friend only to the undertaker

Peace love and understanding tell me
Is there no place for them today
They say we must fight to keep our freedom
But Lord knows there's got to be a better way

    War, huh, good God y'all
    What is it good for?
You tell 'em, say it, say it, say it, say it
    War, good Lord, huh
    What is it good for?
Stand up and shout it, nothing
War, it ain't nothin' but a heartbreaker

KC & The Sunshine Band ~ Im Your Boogie Man 1977 Disco Purrfection Version

    8:29

In its formative stages, this song had dummy lyrics that went like I'll be a son of a gun, look what you done about a relationship gone bad. KC was not happy with the song, and was inspired when he thought about the DJ's who played his band's music in the clubs. That's when the lyric I'm your boogie man came out and he finished the song making the DJ the subject and working in the idea that he was there to help and make you feel better. On the album Part 3, it segues directly into Keep It Comin' Love keeping the dancers on the floor and preaching to the masses to not give up, the Rev KC was testifying! He felt that many fight to get somewhere to get ahead, but end up quitting just before they would have succeeded and these two songs together got the message out there. The chart ascension of I'm Your Boogie Man made it their fourth #1 hit of the 70's and made them the second group to do so. The Jackson Five first did it with ABC, I Want You Back, The Love You Save and I'll Be There...KC & The Sunshine Band followed this up with Keep It Comin' Love that peaked at #2 that fall and broke the longstanding habit of having one song reach #1 and then the follow ups did not even break top 20. The floundered a bit before the end of the decade, but came up with a change in beat for Please Don't Go their last #1 hit, and the first #1 of the 1980's. In total they had five #1 hits and helped to define pop music in the disco era.

Steppenwolf - Magic Carpet Ride 1968 HQ

    4:21

I like to dream yes, yes, right between my sound machine
On a cloud of sound I drift in the night
Any place it goes is right
Goes far, flies near, to the stars away from here

Well, you don't know what we can find
Why don't you come with me little girl
    On a magic carpet ride
You don't know what we can see
Why don't you tell your dreams to me
    Fantasy will set you free
    Close your eyes girl
    Look inside girl
Let the sound take you away

Last night I held Aladdin's lamp
And so I wished that I could stay
Before the thing could answer me
Well, someone came and took the lamp away
    I looked around, a lousy candle's all I found

Well, you don't know what we can find
Why don't you come with me little girl
    On a magic carpet ride
Well, you don't know what we can see
Why don't you tell your dreams to me
    Fantasy will set you free
    Close your eyes girl
    Look inside girl
Let the sound take you away.

Tom Browne ~ Thighs High 1980 Disco Purrfection Version

    8:27

Gather round neophyte disco travellers....way way way back in the 70's, jazz music was invading the airwaves. I grew up with a transistor AM radio in my ear, and often during algebra class. FM radios were a thing for the rich, not a five kid family like mine. But my dad's boss gave him a DELUXE 12 band radio in 1971. That radio had the most excellent sound to convey the new FM format. My mom had that radio posted on Top 40 stations most of the time, but others I would come home to country, R&B, soul (thank you Marvin Gaye), beautiful music stations, blast from the past stations...I never knew what I would hear. I started messing around with the stations when my parents were out, to see what else was on this thing...and the strains of Earth, Wind and Fire singing on Ramsey Lewis's Sun Goddess. It was jazz infused R&B and it was intoxicating as hell. I used to trip to it reading the saturday funnies in the late afternoon (after everyone but my dad would read it). I found that there was more music like that, Westchester Lady was the next jazz funk song I fell in love with. The structure of the notes mimics the arrangement of Mike Oldfield's Tubular Bells (another album I tripped to many times from the age of 14 to today). This new genre increased in popularity at the same time disco developed, both becoming beat heavy. Suddenly, jazz went from being this rarefied and abstract topic that few enjoyed to becoming a driving force in pop music. Proof of that pop crossover appeal is Kool & The Gang, and on the R&B charts it was Tom Browne. From Queens NY, he began playing trumpet in the 70's playing behind other jazz funk artists. Soon he was ready for a solo career, and he set about to record his first album. He hit big with Funkin' For Jamaica (N.Y.) a reference to his neighborhood he grew up in, spent four weeks at #1. It never entered the Hot 100, although there was a commercial single available, but only R&B stores and stations were reporting plays. His second LP Move contained his second biggest R&B hit the #4 Thighs High (Grip Your Hips & Move). Toni Smith is handing the vocals here.

The Temptations Papa Was A Rolling Stone

    3:53

It was the third of september
That day I'll always remember, yes I will
'cause that was the day that my daddy died

Never had a chance to see him, no
Never heard nothing but bad things about him
Mama, I'm depending on you to tell me the truth
Mama just hung her head and said

    [chorus]
    papa was a rollin' stone
Wherever he laid his hat was his home
    And when he died
All he left us was alone
    [repeat]

Hey, mama, is it true what they say
That papa never worked aday in his life
Some bad talk going around sayin'
    Papa had three outside children
    And another wife
    That ain't right

Heard some talk about papa and his storefront
    Preachin'
Talkin' about saving souls and all the time
    Leachin'
    And dealing in dirt
Stealin' in the name of the Lord

    But mama she just said

    [chorus]

Say I heard my papa was a jack of all trades
Is that what papa sent to an early grave?
Folks say papa would beg, borrow or steal just
    To pay his bills
Hey, mama, folks say papa was never much in thinkin'
Spent most of his time chasin' women and drinkin'
But mother, I'm depending on you
    To tell me the truth

But my mama she just said

Sly & The Family Stone - A Family Affair

    3:03

Family Affair was a 1971 number-one hit single recorded by Sly & the Family Stone for the Epic Records label. It became the fourth and final number-one pop hit for the band. Rolling Stone magazine later ranked the song #138 on their list of the 500 Greatest Songs of All Time.

    More details (from Wikipedia):

Released on November 6, 1971,[1] Family Affair was markedly different from the earlier Sly & the Family Stone hits. Family Affair is a somber, Hohner Pianet electric piano based record with a rhythm box (or drum machine) providing the rhythm, making it the first number-one hit to feature a programmed rhythm track. Sly Stone and his sister Rose sing lead on the song. The lyrics reflect the good and bad aspects of being family, with Sly delivering his part in a low funk-styled tone instead of his earlier gospel-based shout.

Family Affair was the most successful hit of Sly & the Family Stone's career, peaking at number-one on the Billboard Hot 100 for three weeks, while achieving the same on the Billboard R&B Singles chart for five weeks.[2]. The band's long-awaited fifth album, There's a Riot Goin' On, debuted at number one on the Billboard album charts during the same period. There's a Riot Goin' On was typified by a deep, dark style of funk, evident in Family Affair, that earned the album a place as one of the most influential albums of all time.
