Melvin Van Peebles - Hoppin John from Sweet Sweetback’s Baadasssss Song

    2:26

Sweet Sweetback’s Baadasssss Song, now on CD and 180-gram vinyl:

Stax Records, an imprint of Concord Music Group and its Catalog Division, Craft Recordings, is pleased to announce the reissue of one of its most provocative titles: Melvin Van Peebles’ Sweet Sweetback’s Baadasssss Song. Consistently hailed as a landmark, genre-defining album, this 1971 soundtrack -- performed by a then-unknown Earth, Wind & Fire with contributions by Van Peebles -- will be made available on May 26th for the very first time in high-res and standard digital formats. The vinyl edition features audio remastered from the original analog tapes and cut on the original Stax lathe at Memphis’ Ardent studios, then pressed on 180-gram vinyl at Memphis Record Pressing. The remastered LP also includes new liner notes from author, journalist and music critic Jeff Weiss, as well as from Melvin’s son Mario Van Peebles, director of New Jack City (1991) and 2003’s Baadasssss!, which chronicles the making of his father’s landmark film.
Trailblazing writer, director, actor and composer Melvin Van Peebles was financially and creatively responsible for the entire production of Sweet Sweetback’s Baadasssss Song. Van Peebles not only directed, scripted, and edited the film, but also wrote the score and directed the marketing campaign. The film, which in the end grossed more than $10 million (the highest ever for an independent film at the time), was acclaimed for its political resonance with the black struggle. In his liner notes, Jeff Weiss notes, “For all the resistance mounting in the streets, no black director had yet made a film that captured the spirit of rebellion, frustration and the refusal to accept injustice. Van Peebles alchemized Malcolm X, Iceberg Slim and Soul on Ice with Huey Newton, Gil-Scott Heron and the French New Wave. Badass cinema was born.” The Black Panthers made the film required viewing. And despite the fact that few theaters would screen the X-rated film, the soundtrack helped to market the film to the masses, through radio waves and word of mouth. The success of the film proved to be a genre-defining moment, giving birth to Blaxploitation, and opening the doors for films like Shaft and Super Fly.
The soundtrack features a combination of hymn-based vocalization and jazz rhythms, capturing the funky, gritty and soulful spirit of the time, and foreshadowing the use of sampling that would occur in hip hop music, some 20 years later. Weiss adds, “The soundtrack operates like a surrealist Mobius strip comprised of call-and-response chants against the man…It’s as avant-garde as the film’s kinetic mix of psychedelic jump cuts and dream-like sequences. The music becomes a character itself, unseen but forcefully heard.”
The reissue of Sweet Sweetback’s Baadasssss Song is part of a wider, year-long initiative, celebrating Stax Records’ 60th anniversary. The cross-label collaboration between Concord Music Group and Rhino Entertainment will highlight the hits, deep cuts and rare tracks from the Memphis label’s heyday of the '60s and ‘70s.
    About Stax 60:
The 60th anniversary of the legendary soul label Stax Records commemorates its extraordinary legacy as an international hit-making machine and its indispensable chapter in American musical history as an integrated company in the heart of the Civil Rights movement. Lyrics:
    One, two, one, two, three
We don't wanna sit down, we wanna get down
We don't wanna sit down, we wanna get down
We don't wanna sit down, we wanna get down
We don't wanna sit down, we wanna get down

We don't wanna sit down, we wanna get down
We don't wanna sit down, we wanna get down
We don't wanna sit down, we wanna get down
    Now get on down
    People, get on your feet
    And dance to the beat
    Get up and move around
So we can get on down
We don't wanna sit down, we wanna get down
We don't wanna sit down, we wanna get down
We don't wanna sit down, we wanna get down
We don't wanna sit down, we wanna get down
    Say what?

We don't wanna sit down, we wanna get down
We don't wanna sit down, we wanna get down
We don't wanna sit down, we wanna get down
    Now get on down
    Anything you do is cool
    Whatever makes you groove
Hands high up in the sky
Feels good, oh me, oh my
    Can you dig it? Heh

Coffee, tea or me baby, touche ole
My opening line might be a bit passe
But don't think that I don't know what I'm feeling for you
'Cause I got a vibe on you
The first time that I saw you, saw you
I need your love, and I won't bring no pain
A little birdie told me that you feel the same game
I'm for the real, and for you I'm true blue
    Let's make a deal, sugar
All I want to do is be your one and only lover
I just want to be your lovergirl
I just want to rock your world

KC & The Sunshine Band ~ Shake Your Booty 1976 Disco Purrfection Version

    8:21

1976 was the year of the American Bicentennial, 200 years of independence and this booty shaker of a song hit the charts one week after the 4th of July entering at #79 and then #1 nine weeks later on September 11. Definitely the song of the summer of 76, it also spent four weeks at #1 on the R&B/Soul charts. KC was surprised at these accomplishments since he thought the song was NOT going to be a hit. This song came about after a tour when he noticed that there were some people who never got out of their seats during the concert. He addressed this song to those who would not dance. In the best tradition of Earth, Wind & Fire, KC wrote the uplifting lyrics beckoning them to don't fight the feeling, give yourself a chance. He wanted to instill self confidence in people with this song, and did he succeed! KC and The Sunshine Band were more interested in having fun than issuing social commentary and wanted to keep the feeling up. KC feels the song has more depth, and shaking your booty means not just on the dance floor, but in everything you do in life. Writing songs was KC savior, as he often wrote when he was feeling really down and it helped him get through those tough times. Prominently featured is the clavinet, a keyboard instrument with a distinctive bright staccato sound that has appeared in funk, disco, rock, and reggae songs. Here it could easily be mistaken for a guitar as KC went up an octave giving this hit single a higher sound. At the time, (Shake Shake Shake) Shake Your Booty was the #1 single with the most repeated word in its title, a total of four times and a total of seven times in each chorus. Frank Zappa paid homage to KC for his disco parody LP Sheik Yerbouti in 1979. Here is my special extended version just for fun and in time for New Year's!

It was released as a single in 1978 and did moderately well on the charts, and has been featured in several other films as well as television series over the years. Although the band is known for their funk and R&B styles, KC (Harry Wayne Casey) and his band, put out several chart topping hits that helped shaped the sound of what became known as Disco.

Tom Browne ~ Thighs High 1980 Disco Purrfection Version

    8:27

Gather round neophyte disco travellers....way way way back in the 70's, jazz music was invading the airwaves. I grew up with a transistor AM radio in my ear, and often during algebra class. FM radios were a thing for the rich, not a five kid family like mine. But my dad's boss gave him a DELUXE 12 band radio in 1971. That radio had the most excellent sound to convey the new FM format. My mom had that radio posted on Top 40 stations most of the time, but others I would come home to country, R&B, soul (thank you Marvin Gaye), beautiful music stations, blast from the past stations...I never knew what I would hear. I started messing around with the stations when my parents were out, to see what else was on this thing...and the strains of Earth, Wind and Fire singing on Ramsey Lewis's Sun Goddess. It was jazz infused R&B and it was intoxicating as hell. I used to trip to it reading the saturday funnies in the late afternoon (after everyone but my dad would read it). I found that there was more music like that, Westchester Lady was the next jazz funk song I fell in love with. The structure of the notes mimics the arrangement of Mike Oldfield's Tubular Bells (another album I tripped to many times from the age of 14 to today). This new genre increased in popularity at the same time disco developed, both becoming beat heavy. Suddenly, jazz went from being this rarefied and abstract topic that few enjoyed to becoming a driving force in pop music. Proof of that pop crossover appeal is Kool & The Gang, and on the R&B charts it was Tom Browne. From Queens NY, he began playing trumpet in the 70's playing behind other jazz funk artists. Soon he was ready for a solo career, and he set about to record his first album. He hit big with Funkin' For Jamaica (N.Y.) a reference to his neighborhood he grew up in, spent four weeks at #1. It never entered the Hot 100, although there was a commercial single available, but only R&B stores and stations were reporting plays. His second LP Move contained his second biggest R&B hit the #4 Thighs High (Grip Your Hips & Move). Toni Smith is handing the vocals here.

Midnight Star - No Parking On The Dance Floor

    Lyrics:
    Excuse me, madam
You're standing still in a no parking zone
You don't get a move on that body
I'll be forced to give you a ticket
    So get with it
There's a party tonight, you're in a red light zone
If you don't want a ticket you better move on
If you break the law you gotta pay your dues
Ain't much better if you play it by the rules
Cause it's so easy, it's so right
It's so easy to rock it with your body, baby
It's so easy, it's so right
It's so easy if you drive it all night
    No parking, baby
No parking on the dance floor
    No parking, baby
No parking on the dance floor
Let me hear you blow your horn
    {Beep-beep, beep-beep, beep-beep} Shake it, baby
    {Beep-beep, beep-beep, beep-beep}
    {Beep-beep, beep-beep, beep-beep} Rock it, baby
    {Beep-beep, beep-beep, beep-beep}
Movin' violations are easy to fix
Just tell the deejay to fix it in the mix
Shake it up and shake it on down
Let me feel you movin', you gotta get down
Cause it's so easy, it's so right
It's so easy to rock it with your body, baby
It's so easy, it's so right
It's so easy if you drive it all night
    No parking, baby
No parking on the dance floor
(I want to say it again)
    No parking, baby
    No parking on the dance floor {Ah...}
    Shake it, baby
    {Beep-beep, beep-beep, beep-beep}
    {Beep-beep, beep-beep, beep-beep} Rock it, baby
    {Beep-beep, beep-beep, beep-beep}
    Rock it
    Work it
    Shake it
    Don't drive it
    Baby, baby, baby
Don't park your booty, don't park your can
It's time to party, it's time to jam
Don't park your booty, don't park your can
It's time to party, it's time to jam
Don't park your booty, don't park your can
It's time to party, it's time to jam
